Awakeness Practices

All 84,000 Khandas As Found in the Pali Suttas

Traditionally the are 84,000 Dharma Doors - 84,000 ways to get Awakeness. Maybe so; certainly the Buddha taught a large number of practices that lead to Awakeness. This web page attempts to catalogue those found in the Pali Suttas (DN, MN, SN, AN, Ud & Sn 1). There are 3 sections:

The discourses of Buddha are divided into 84,000, as to separate addresses. The division includes all that was spoken by Buddha.”I received from Buddha,” said Ananda, “82,000 Khandas, and  from the priests 2000; these are 84,000 Khandas maintained by me.” They are divided into 275,250, as to the stanzas of the original text, and into 361,550, as to the stanzas of the commentary. All the discourses including both those of Buddha and those of the commentator, are divided  into 2,547 banawaras, containing 737,000 stanzas, and 29,368,000 separate letters.

Adiya Sutta: Benefits to be Obtained (from Wealth)

translated from the Pali by

Thanissaro Bhikkhu

© 1997–2010

Then Anathapindika the householder went to the Blessed One and, on arrival, having bowed down to him, sat to one side. As he was sitting there the Blessed One said to him: “There are these five benefits that can be obtained from wealth. Which five?

“There is the case where the disciple of the noble ones — using the wealth earned through his efforts & enterprise, amassed through the strength of his arm, and piled up through the sweat of his brow, righteous wealth righteously gained — provides himself with pleasure & satisfaction, and maintains that pleasure rightly. He provides his mother & father with pleasure & satisfaction, and maintains that pleasure rightly. He provides his children, his wife, his slaves, servants, & assistants with pleasure & satisfaction, and maintains that pleasure rightly. This is the first benefit that can be obtained from wealth.

“Furthermore, the disciple of the noble ones — using the wealth earned through his efforts & enterprise, amassed through the strength of his arm, and piled up through the sweat of his brow, righteous wealth righteously gained — provides his friends & associates with pleasure & satisfaction, and maintains that pleasure rightly. This is the second benefit that can be obtained from wealth.

“Furthermore, the disciple of the noble ones — using the wealth earned through his efforts & enterprise, amassed through the strength of his arm, and piled up through the sweat of his brow, righteous wealth righteously gained — wards off from calamities coming from fire, flood, kings, thieves, or hateful heirs, and keeps himself safe. This is the third benefit that can be obtained from wealth.

“Furthermore, the disciple of the noble ones — using the wealth earned through his efforts & enterprise, amassed through the strength of his arm, and piled up through the sweat of his brow, righteous wealth righteously gained — performs the five oblations: to relatives, guests, the dead, kings, & devas. This is the fourth benefit that can be obtained from wealth.

“Furthermore, the disciple of the noble ones — using the wealth earned through his efforts & enterprise, amassed through the strength of his arm, and piled up through the sweat of his brow, righteous wealth righteously gained — institutes offerings of supreme aim, heavenly, resulting in happiness, leading to heaven, given to priests & contemplatives who abstain from intoxication & heedlessness, who endure all things with patience & humility, each taming himself, each restraining himself, each taking himself to Unbinding. This is the fifth benefit that can be obtained from wealth.

“If it so happens that, when a disciple of the noble ones obtains these five benefits from wealth, his wealth goes to depletion, the thought occurs to him, ‘Even though my wealth has gone to depletion, I have obtained the five benefits that can be obtained from wealth,’ and he feels no remorse. If it so happens that, when a disciple of the noble ones obtains these five benefits from wealth, his wealth increases, the thought occurs to him, ‘I have obtained the five benefits that can be obtained from wealth, and my wealth has increased,’ and he feels no remorse. So he feels no remorse in either case.”

‘My wealth has been enjoyed,

my dependents supported,

protected from calamities by me.

I have given supreme offerings

& performed the five oblations.

I have provided for the virtuous,

the restrained,

followers of the holy life.

For whatever aim a wise householder

would desire wealth,

that aim I have attained.

I have done what will not lead to future distress.’

When this is recollected by a mortal,

a person established in the Dhamma of the Noble Ones,

he is praised in this life

and, after death, rejoices in heaven.

The teachings of Buddha are eternal, but even then Buddha did not proclaim them to be infallible. The religion of Buddha has the capacity to change according to times, a quality which no other religion can claim to have…Now what is the basis of Buddhism? If you study carefully, you will see that Buddhism is based on reason. There is an element of flexibility inherent in it, which is not found in any other religion.

Mayawati orders probe into rape allegations against BSP legislator
IANS, Jan 2, 2011, 12.29am IST

LUCKNOW: Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati on Saturday ordered a
police inquiry into the allegations of gangrape and illegal
confinement of a minor girl by a ruling Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP)
legislator and his supporters in the state’s Banda district.

In an official press release issued her, the chief minister said: “The
Crime Branch of the CID has been asked to take over the investigation
into the case of alleged gangrape of a girl in Banda. The
investigating team has been asked to reach Banda by Sunday morning and
start their work immediately.”

The girl, belonging to a Dalit community, had accused BSP legislator
Pushottam Narain Dwivedi and his henchmen of not only subjecting her
to gangrape but also using his influence to implicate her in a case of
theft.

Dwivedi accused her of stealing the legislator’s licenced revolver and
Rs 5000 from his house, for which she was currently lodged in jail in
Banda, 180 km from here.

HONEYLEAKS

on Battle of Koregaon

It would be interesting to find out more about Havaldar Condojee Kullojee, who fought at koregaon and was appointed as the keeper of the monument. His descendents must be living there.

…The 2nd Battalion traces its origin to the 13th Sepoy battalion raised in Calicut in 1796 when the Bombay army was reorganized. It was linked with the Grenadiers Regiment two years later which then became the 1st Grenadiers battalion. For its distinctive achievement at the battle of Koregaon, the 13th was also conferred the title “Grenadiers” and then became the second senior most battalion of the Grenadier Regiment.  The Koregaon action for which a monument has been raised at the small village on the bank of Bhima River north of Pune is a story of epic contest. Five hundred men of the 2nd battalion (13th Sepoys) supported by 250 auxiliary horse, since named Poona Horse, fought a defensive action against a very superior force, more than 30 times its strength (20000 cavalry and 8000 infantry) on January 1 1818. This small force had marched 43 kilometers the previous night and before it could organize the defenses properly, it was invested by the Peshwa’s army and 3000 Arabs who managed to occupy the strongest post immediately thereafter. The Grenadiers stood their ground in spite of repeated assaults. Besides being short of men, they were also without food and water but continued to hold for the next two days. Casualties were heavy. Of the 24 European gunners who manned the two guns, 20 had become casualties, thus paralyzing these vital supporting weapons. The Marathas continued to press home the assaults and both the attacker and the attacked must have been surprised at the turn of events. While the 2nd battalion gave no quarter, the Marathas decided to call it a day and disappeared during the hours of darkness on January 2, just when Captain Staunton, commandant of the 2nd had decided to break contact and retreat to Pune. This bravery was suitably rewarded. Sepoy Sookram was promoted Jemadar for outstanding gallantry and all ranks of the regiment were granted gratuity of six months pay and benefit of five years seniority for pension. Havildar Condojee Kullojee who had fought at Koregaon was made the keeper of the monument erected on the site. The trust has since become hereditary in his family. Captain Staunton was presented with a sword as a gift by the East India Company. This sword and the medals of the officer now occupy a place of honor in the Officers mess of the battalion…

गांधीजींच्या घराच्या ताब्यासाठी “कोल इंडिया’चे पुन्हा प्रयत्न
पीटीआय
Monday, January 03, 2011 AT 02:00 AM (IST)

Decision on aerospace varsity after aero show

A hub:The university will provide training not only for research and development but also to those coming out of the industrial training institutes in the State.

Bangalore: The proposal for a privately promoted aerospace university near Devanahalli, which was first mooted at the Global Investors Meet (GIM) in June, is likely to fructify after the Bangalore Aero Show in February, sources in the Government as well industry told The Hindu on Saturday.

V.P. Baligar, Principal Secretary, Commerce and Industries, said: “The State Government is only a facilitator for the private initiative to establish a dedicated university for aerospace near Devanahalli, near the Bengaluru International Airport.” The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) is also involved in the venture.

The Vice-Chairman of the Karnataka State Council of the CII, S. Chandrasekhar, said that the dedicated university would train personnel working at all levels of the industry. “The university will play a critical role in enabling Bangalore to function as a hub or a base for the aerospace industry,” Mr. Chandrasekhar said. He said the university would provide training not only for research and development but also to those coming out of the industrial training institutes in the State. The Task Force on Aerospace, headed by Chief Secretary S.V. Ranganath, “is closely monitoring the progress of the project,” he added.

He said a significant announcement may be made after the aero show in February.

Mr. Baligar said the aerospace park near Devanahalli was “in an advanced stage of completion.” Asked about the progress of the projects that were proposed during the GIM, Mr. Baligar said: “The progress has been really good, although things had slowed down somewhat because of panchayat elections in the State.”

Progress so far

More than 180 projects, out of a total of 389 that were proposed by investors during the GIM, had “taken off,” Mr. Baligar said. Twelve projects have already commenced production. Twenty more are “at an advanced stage of completion, and are likely come on stream in the next few months,” Mr. Baligar said.

Mr. Chandrasekhar, who is also managing director of Bhoruka Power Corporation Ltd., said the clutch of gas-based power projects proposed at the GIM were “awaiting” the laying of the gas pipeline by GAIL Ltd. The work on the pipeline is likely to be completed by 2012. However, the price at which gas would be supplied for the new power projects still remains a key imponderable.

The LNG currently hovers at about $10 per million British Thermal Unit (mmbtu). At this price, power would cost about Rs. 5 to Rs. 6 per unit, which would be a viable proposition, Mr. Chandrasekhar said. However, the problem was that there were currently no long-term contracts for LNG imports, which could pose risks for power projects, he said. The task force was examining the possibility of instituting a “canalising agency” that could facilitate assured supplies of LNG at spot prices for projects in the State, he said.
