And furthermore, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu dwells observing dhammas in dhammas with reference to the five khandhas. And furthermore, bhikkhus, how does a bhikkhu dwell observing dhammas in dhammas with reference to the five khandhas?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu, ‘iti rūpaṃ, iti rūpassa samudayo, iti rūpassa atthaṅgamo; iti vedanā, iti vedanāya samudayo, iti vedanāya atthaṅgamo; iti saññā, iti saññāya samudayo, iti saññāya atthaṅgamo; iti saṅkhārā, iti saṅkhārānaṃ samudayo, iti saṅkhārānaṃ atthaṅgamo; iti viññāṇaṃ, iti viññāṇassa samudayo, iti viññāṇassa atthaṅgamo’ ti.

Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu [discerns]: “such is rūpa, such is the samudaya of rūpa, such is the passing away of rūpa; such is vedanā, such is the samudaya of vedanā, such is the passing away of vedanā; such is saññā, such is the samudaya of saññā, such is the passing away of saññā; such is saṅkhāra, such is the samudaya of saṅkhāra, such is the passing away of saṅkhāra; such is viññāṇa, such is the samudaya of viññāṇa, such is the passing away of viññāṇa“.

Thus he dwells observing dhammas in dhammas internally, or he dwells observing dhammas in dhammas externally, or he dwells observing dhammas in dhammas internally and externally; he dwells observing the samudaya of phenomena in dhammas, or he dwells observing the passing away of phenomena in dhammas, or he dwells observing the samudaya and passing away of phenomena in dhammas; or else, [realizing:] “these are dhammas!” sati is present in him, just to the extent of mere ñāṇa and mere paṭissati, he dwells detached, and does not cling to anything in the world. Thus, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu dwells observing dhammas in dhammas, with reference to the five khandhas.

Verse 282. Way To Increase Wisdom
From endeavour wisdom springs,
lacking effort wisdom wanes:
having known this two-fold path
either to progress or decline
so should one exhort oneself
that wisdom may increase.
Explanation: From reflection and concentrated meditation refined
wisdom arises. Through the non-practice of concentrated wisdom erodes.
Once these two paths - one leading to progress and the other to decline
- are recognized, one must conduct one’s self to increased wisdom.
Dhammapada Verse 282
Potthilatthera Vatthu
Yoga ve jayati bhuri
ayoga bhurisankhayo
etam dvedhapatham natva
bhavaya vibhavaya ca
tatha ttanam niveseyya
yatha bhuri pavaddhati.
Verse 282: Indeed, wisdom is born of meditation; without meditation wisdom is
lost. Knowing this twofold path of gain and loss of wisdom, one should conduct
oneself so that wisdom may increase.
The Story of Thera Potthila
While residing at the Jetavana monastery, the Buddha uttered Verse (282) of
this book, with reference to Thera Potthila.
Potthila was a senior bhikkhu who knew the Pitaka well and was actually
teaching the Dhamma to five hundred bhikkhus. Because he knew the Pitaka, he was
also very conceited. The Buddha knew his weakness and wanted him to mend his
ways and put him on the right path. So, whenever Potthila came to pay obeisance,
the Buddha would address him as ‘Useless Potthila‘. When Potthila heard
these remarks, he pondered over those words of the Buddha and came to realize
that the Buddha had made those unkind remarks because he, Potthila, had not made
any serious effort to practise meditation and had not achieved any of the Maggas
or even any level of mental absorption (jhana).
Thus, without telling anyone Thera Potthila left for a monastery at a place
twenty yojanas away from the Jetavana monastery. At that monastery there were
thirty bhikkhus. First, he went to the most senior bhikkhu and humbly requested
him to be his mentor; but the thera, wishing to humble him, asked him to go to
the next senior bhikkhu, who in his turn sent him on to the next. In this way,
he was sent from one to the other until he came to a seven year old arahat
samanera. The young samanera accepted him as a pupil only after ascertaining
that Potthila would obediently follow his instructions. As instructed by the
samanera, Thera Potthila kept his mind firmly fixed on the true nature of the
body; he was very ardent and vigilant in his meditation.
The Buddha saw Potthila in his vision and through supernormal power made
Potthila feel his presence and encouraged him to be steadfast and ardent.
Then the Buddha spoke in verse as follows:
Verse 282: Indeed, wisdom is born of meditation;
without meditation wisdom is lost. Knowing this twofold path of gain
and loss of wisdom, one should conduct oneself so that wisdom may
increase.

The Deer Park Buddhist Center and Monastery in Oregon, Wisconsin is headed by Geshe Lhundub Sopa,[1] the first Tibetan tenured professor in an American University who taught Buddhist philosophy, language and culture at the University of Wisconsin–Madison[2]
for 30 years. During that time, Geshe Sopa trained many of this
country’s first generation of respected Buddhist scholars and
translators, including Jeffrey Hopkins, José Ignacio Cabezón, and John Makransky.
The Deer Park Corp. is in the process of building a new $2.7M Temple Project [3] to house an extensive collection of Tibetan art and artifacts, provide greater capacity for group meetings and educational sessions, continue the expansion of Tibetan Buddhism
in the New World by training a successive string of new Monks, and to
continue the promotion of the cause of Tibetan freedom from China.
Part of the project also includes restoration work that will be done on
the current temple, which was originally an open-air pavilion erected
to house the first Kalachakra Initiation performed by the Dalai Lama in the western world. That event, performed in 1981, is commemorated by the stupa that was erected the following year near the current temple.
Geshe Sopa founded Deer Park Buddhist Center in 1975, after students
began requesting instruction outside the formal academic setting. Deer
Park today remains the only full-scale monastic and teaching center
upholding the Dalai Lama’s tradition in the Midwest, attracting students
from around the world to its annual programs.
Geshe Sopa has facilitated an ongoing relationship between His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the University of Wisconsin–Madison, which His Holiness has visited five times, and from which he has received an honorary doctoral degree.

Sotekizan Korinzenji (祖的山光林禅寺), Korinji for short, is a Rinzai Zen Buddhist monastery (sodo) being constructed in the Upper Midwest region of the United States near Madison, Wisconsin.
The Korinji Foundation, a not-for-profit charitable organization, was
founded in 2005 to fund Korinji’s construction and to support its future
residents. 17 acres (69,000 m2) of forested land were
purchased by the Foundation for this purpose in 2008. Groundbreaking
occurred in June, 2009 according to the Korinji website. Korinji and Daiyuzenji, a sister temple in Chicago, together anchor a network of associated Zen practice groups called the Rinzai Zen Community (RZC).
The Zen teachers involved with Korinji are in the line of Omori Sogen Roshi, a well-known Japanese Zen master who was a successor of the Tenryu-ji line of Zen.

I recently started baking loaves
of bread when I became disappointed with what I was getting from the
store and it’s rising cost. I got tired of spending so much money on
something I knew I could do better. There was also the satisfaction
that what I was eating was a more organic food because I knew what I
was putting into it. Soon I began to look into a various recipes and
recipe books and the seed for my idea was born. After a few unexpected
results and a lot of course corrections, I finally started to see and
taste the results of my efforts.
That’s
why I’m here. I’m hoping to be able to share those results with you.
On Facebook, I set up a small group page called “AI KI Dough”. On
this page, I’ve posted pictures of some of the breads I’ve made
recently and how to contact me in case you might want to order some
(hint, hint). I am donating a portion of the money from each sale to
the Korinji Foundation Monastery Project and investing the other portion
into buying yeast, flour and spices. I am hoping to have this
fundraiser throughout the year. This Facebook website will be where I
put photos and various updates of what’s available and the progress
we’ve made in raising funds.

THE WOODPECKER AND THE LION

NE day while a Lion was eating his dinner
a bone stuck in his throat.
It hurt so that he could not finish his dinner.
He walked up and down, up and down, roaring with pain.
A Woodpecker lit on a branch of a tree near-by,
and hearing the Lion, she said, “Friend, what ails you?”
The Lion told the Woodpecker what the matter was,
and the Woodpecker said: “I would take the bone
out of your throat, friend, but I do not dare
to put my head into your mouth,
for fear I might never get it out again.
I am afraid you might eat me.”
“O Woodpecker, do not be afraid,” the Lion said.
“I will not eat you. Save my life if you can!”
“I will see what I can do for you,” said the Woodpecker.
“Open your mouth wide.” The Lion did as he was told,
but the Woodpecker said to himself.
“Who knows what this Lion will do? I think I will be careful.”
[37] So the Woodpecker put a stick between the Lion’s upper and lower jaws
so that he could not shut his mouth.
Then the Woodpecker hopped into the Lion’s mouth
and hit the end of the bone with his beak.
The second time he hit it, the bone fell out.
The woodpecker hopped out of the Lion’s mouth
and hit the stick so that it too fell out.
Then the Lion could shut his mouth.

At once the Lion felt very much better,
but not one word of thanks did he say to the Woodpecker.
[38] One day later in the summer, the Woodpecker said to the Lion,
“I want you to do something for me.”
“Do something for you?” said the Lion.
“You mean you want me to do something more for you.
I have already done a great deal for you.
You cannot expect me to do anything more for you.
Do not forget that once I had you in my mouth,
and I let you go. That is all that you can ever expect me to do for you.”
The Woodpecker said no more,
but he kept away from the Lion from that day on.
