Uttar Pradesh Pradesh Assembly Elections 2017: Muslims dominate BSP’s first list of 100 candidates for Western UP
Muslims constitute nearly 26 per cent of the population in Western Uttar Pradesh.
Lucknow, Jan 5: Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) has released the first list
of candidates for the upcoming Uttar Pradesh Assembly Elections 2017.
The list of candidates have been declared a day after Election
Commission of India (ECI) released the polling schedule for Uttar
Pradesh. The list released by BSP supremo Mayawati features the names of
100 candidates, all from the region of Western Uttar Pradesh.
The list is dominated by Muslim candidates, owing to the demography of
the region. A total of 37 Muslim candidates have been fielded by
Mayawati, as per the first list. Important to note is that the Western
Uttar Pradesh turned into the hotbed of communal politics in 2014, due
to the Muzaffarnagar riots. BSP and Samajwadi Party would be competing
for the share of Muslim electorate in the region. On the other hand,
pollsters opine that BJP would eye the consolidation of Hindu votes in
their favour.
Western Uttar Pradesh – Key demographic details
As per the 2001 census, the total population of Western Uttar Pradesh is 5,57,17,132.
The share of Muslims in the total population is 26 per cent.
Hindus constitute nearly 72 per cent of the population.
The share of Muslims (26 per cent) is higher than their overall share of population in UP, which is 17 per cent.
Jats (upper-caste) form the most influential community among Hindus
in Western UP. Their share of population is 17 per cent.
In the 2012 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, a total of 26 Muslim candidates were elected from the region.
Western UP – Hotbed of communal politics
The 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots has sharply divided the electorate on
communal lines. In the violent clashes of Sep 2013, 43 lives were lost,
whereas, 93 were left critically injured. More than 50,000 people were
left displaced.
The region witnessed a sharp polarisation in
2014 Lok Sabha elections, with BJP registering a clean sweep victory in
the region.
The communal pot is expected remain boiling in
Western Uttar Pradesh in 2017 assembly elections as well. The issue of
alleged Hindu exodus from Kairana would be used as poll plank by BJP,
claims sources linked to News 18.
The Kairana exodus issue was
raked up in July 2016 by BJP MP from Kairana Hukum Singh. According to
the allegations, nearly 250 families were forced to leave the region due
to law and order violations by criminal gangs of a certain community.

Assembly Elections in Uttar Pradesh:
Election Commission of India released the poll schedule for Uttar
Pradesh on Wednesday. The polls would be held in seven phases – Feb 11,
15, 19, 23, 27 and March 4, 8. A total of 403 seats would be contested.
The counting of votes is scheduled on March 11.

Our President and CJI must revert the judgement of ex CJI Sathasivam
who committed a grave error of judgement by ordering that the EVMs could
be replaced in a phased manner as suggested by the ex CEC Sampath
because of the cost of Rs 1600 crores involved for entire replacement of
the EVMs which have been proved that they are tamperable.

The ex CJI had committed a grave error of judgement by ordering that
