Chief Justice Dipak Misra extended the deadline after the Centre said
it had already submitted that they were ready to extend the March 31
deadline for linking of the national biometric identifier with all
services and welfare schemes.
“We direct that the ****March 31,
2018, deadline for linking of Aadhaar with various services and welfare
schemes stand extended till the matter is heard and judgement is
pronounced*** [emphasis added] by the constitution bench,” the bench
also comprising Justices A K Sikri, A M Khanwilkar, D Y Chandrachud and
Ashok Bhushan said.
The extension of deadline would ***also***
[emphasis added] apply on the mandatory linking of Aadhaar with the bank

Aadhaar: Supreme Court extends linking deadline indefinitely
The Supreme Court on Wednesday indefinitely extended the deadline for
linking of Aadhaar numbers with bank accounts and phone numbers [only?],
till the top court pronounces its verdict in the ongoing case.
The five-judge constitution bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra,
While the extension is certainly welcome, it is also important to note
that there currently is some uncertainty about whether this extension
applies to linkages made mandatory under Section 7 of the Aadhaar Act.
If the latest order does indeed exclude Aadhaar linkages mandated under
Section 7, a large number of Central and State Government schemes (such
as PDS, LPG, MNREGA and many more) would still need to be linked to
Aadhaar by the end of the month, significantly diminishing the relief
brought by today’s order. We are awaiting a copy of the interim order to
clarify this, said non profit legal services organisation Software

Behanji Mayawatiās clarion call to the BSP in New Delhi to liberate the country from the clutches of fascist rule
After the fall of the Maratha Empire in 1818, the Chitpavans lost
their political dominance to the British. The British would not
subsidize the Chitpavans on the same scale that their caste-fellow, the
Peshwas, had done in the past. Pay and power was now significantly
reduced. Poorer Chitpavan students adapted and started learning English
because of better opportunities in the British administration.
Some of the prominent figures in the Hindu reform movements of the 19th and 20th centuries came from the Chitpavan Brahmin community. These included Dhondo Keshav Karve, Justice Mahadev Govind Ranade, Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, Gopal Ganesh Agarkar,[32] Vinoba Bhave.
Some of the strongest resistance to change came from the very same
community. The vanguard and the old guard clashed many times. D. K.
Karve was ostracised. Even Tilak offered penance for breaking caste or
religious rules. One was for taking tea at Poona Christian mission in
1892 and the second was going to England in 1919.
The Chitpavan community includes two major politicians in the Gandhian tradition: Gopal Krishna Gokhale,
whom Gandhi acknowledged as a preceptor, and Vinoba Bhave, one of his
outstanding disciples. Gandhi describes Bhave as the “jewel of his
disciples”, and recognised Gokhale as his political guru. However,
strong opposition to Gandhi came from the Chitpavan community. Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, the founder of the Hindu nationalist political ideology Hindutva,
was a Chitpavan Brahmin and several other Chitpavans were among the
first to embrace it because they thought it was a logical extension of
the legacy of the Peshwas and caste-fellow Tilak. These Chitpavans felt out of place with the Indian social reform
movement of Phule and the mass politics of Gandhi. Large numbers of the
community looked to Savarkar, the Hindu Mahasabha and finally the RSS. Gandhi’s assassins, Narayan Apte and Nathuram Godse, drew their inspiration from fringe groups in this reactionary trend.

Greetings from “People’s Platform Against Fascism”. We are a
fledgling platform from TamilNadu dedicated to countering the Fascist
Hindutva regime. Our modest initiative is at its core a composition of
students, academicians, intellectuals, artists, activists and working
professionals of a progressive secular political disposition.
We
are writing to you in connection with the ongoing fascist campaign in
the name of the second “Ram Ratha Yatra” by Sangh Parivar ( Let us be
specific in saying that it is the just 0.1% intolerant, cunning,
crooked, number one terrorists of the world, violent, militant, ever
shooting, lynching, lunatic, mentally retarded Paradesis Bene Israeli
chitpavan brahmins) that demands for “Ram Rajya in India” and
“reconstruction of the Ram temple at Ram Janma Bhoomi”. As you would be
aware, this yatra is headed to cover 6 states and more than 6000 Km
between February 13 and March 25, with the complete backing of the State
machinery, as per the Union Home Ministry’s directives. The Ratha Yatra
declares express goals to tackle the ’situation in Kerala’ and is very
evident that it targets the southern states in view of the upcoming
Assembly and Parliamentary elections in these states. In TamilNadu
alone, the Sangh and BJP leaders are already about to successfully
conclude the ‘Sister Nivedita 150 Yatra’ that has reached 3 lakh women
students across women’s colleges and schools in all districts of TN. A
part of this Yatra also coincided with the Chennai Hindu Spiritual
Fair’s 9th edition that was officially sponsored by the TN State Govt.
and involved massive casteist and right-wing mobilisation of students,
youth and women.
As students and young workers we increasingly
feel the urgency to stop and to reverse the harm that this aggressive
saffronisation intends for our colleges and workplaces. It is hence that
we are launching a ‘MARCH FOR SECULARISM’ in Tamil Nadu. The 10-day
march centered around Bhagat Singh’s memorial anniversary, will call out
to young people and to all progressive secular forces at the helm to
“Defeat Fascism and Unite for Democracy and Social Justice”.. (Please
find a detailed description of the March in the concluding portion of
this mail)
Arrangements for the ‘March for Secularism’ flagging
off event in Chennai, as well as for the subsequent major events in
Coimbatore and Kanyakumari, are underway. We would be more than inspired
to benefit from the mentorship and solidarity of an eminent defender of
justice and civil rights, such as yourself. Your body of work against
atrocities, polarisation and for secularism, has regularly offered us
young members a glimpse of how a conscientious practice of politics
could animate society.
Besides having your affirmation about
participating in our campaign or supporting us in any other way most
convenient for you, we would also be glad to discuss journey dates with
you over phone, at the earliest. Please let us know a good time in the
next one or 2 days.
We look forward to your views. We are also
hoping you will persuade other friends of yours who will be in a
position to contribute to the march in whatever way possible.
******************************
The ‘March for Secularism’:
The march will involve a caravan physically designed to invoke secular
anti-caste, resistive and rationalist traditions of the modern Tamil era
and of earlier literary and archaeological sources. A number of
progressive student leaders, students’ groups and secular organisations
are eager to be a part of this caravan. We are also talking to a large
number of well known activists, personalities, from the fields of art
and cinema, as well as individual politicians committed to a secular
democratic cause from outside of Tamilnadu, who will be able to extend
their solidarity.
Starting from Chennai the Caravan would travel
around 2400km, across 49 districts and 21 major cities, participating
in public gatherings and more than 40 Rallies. The Caravan would stop at
around 52 points on its route from Chennai to Kanyakumari. It will
depart from Chennai on March 21st and arrive in Coimbatore on the 24th .
There will be a grand public meeting in Coimbatore the same day which
will be in solidarity with Bhagat Singh’s memorial anniversary. This
public meeting will take Bhagat Singh’s message (based on his letters
prior to his martyrdom) to a wide audience of students and
youngsters. The caravan will then proceed to Madurai, Rajapalayam,
Tirunelveli, Rameshwaram and finally to Kanyakumari on the 10th day. All
along its route, the caravan will speak to 20,000 students, more than
50,000 struggling workers, farmers in the Cauvery delta region and
fishworkers of the south eastern coast, inviting them to rally together
against the fascist forces threatening to permanently poison the
democratic basis for struggle. Through continuous pamphleteering,
institutional campaigning and targeted public events, the caravan will
expressly stand for the protection of and justice for minority
communities, for putting an end to their humiliation, and for an
alternative progressive agenda of dignified jobs/livelihoods, education
and healthcare for all. A people’s pledge shall be administered on all
these points by community leaders and organisers. Tamil Nadu has always
been close on the heels of Gujarat and Maharashtra in terms of an
alarmingly disproportionate number of Muslim undertrials in prison and
detainees in lockups. Hence, wherever possible, the caravan will make
its way to riot hit areas, to areas where the Sangh Parivar or its
casteist allies have been trying to leave a mark, reaching out to
communities living under pervasive intimidation, State terror or
Islamophobic repression.

Opposition unity ahead of the Congressā upcoming plenary session
Arch rivals from among Opposition parties put up a united face at the
dinner hosted by UPA chairperson and former Congress President Sonia
Gandhi in Delhi on Tuesday, with an eye on defeating the BJP-led NDA in
the next Lok Sabha elections. As many as 20 parties attended the dinner.
Bitter political opponents in West Bengal, the Trinamool Congress was
represented by Sudip Bandyopadhyay and the CPI(M) by Mohd Salim and TK
Rangarajan. Another pair of traditional rivals who have shown recent
bonhomie for the Uttar Pradesh Lok Sabha bypolls, the Samajwadi party
represented by Ram Gopal Yadav and Bahujan Samaj Party represented by
Satish Mishra, both attended the dinner at Sonia Gandhiās residence, 10,
Janpath. Ajit Singh of UPās Rashtriya Lok Dal was also present. Other
Left parties at the dinner included CPI, represented by D Raja and
Revolutionary Socialist Party represented by NK Premchandran.
Jharkhandās main opposition leaders Hemant Soren of Jharkhand Mukti
Morcha (JMM) and Babulal Marandi of Jharkhand Vikas Morcha-Prajatantrik
(JVM(P)) were also seen at the gathering.
Besides former Prime
Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress President Rahul Gandhi, Congress
leaders Ahmed Patel, Ghulam Nabi Azad, AK Antony, Mallikarjun Kharge and
Randeep Surjewala were also present.
NCP leader Sharad Pawar
along with Tariq Anwar and daughter of the DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi, M
Kanimozhi was present, as was former Chief Minister of Jammu and
Kashmir and JKNC leader Omar Abdullah, RJD leaders Misa Bharti and
Tejashwi Yadav, Hindustani Awam Morcha leader Jitan Ram Manjhi and
Indian Tribal Party leader Sharad Yadav. PK Kunhalikutty of IUML,
Badruddin Ajmal of AIUDF, Jose K Mani of Kerala Congress and D Kupendra
Reddy of the Janata Dal (Secular) also attended the dinner.
The
dinner for opposition parties is being seen as Sonia Gandhiās attempt to
weave a grand unity among opposition parties ahead of the Congress’
upcoming plenary session. Seventeen opposition parties had come together
against the BJP-led NDA during the presidential and vice-presidential
elections last year and Sonia Gandhi has been holding occasional
meetings to nurture the bonding. Congress leaders said the group was
expanding with Manjhi and Marandi coming to attend the dinner.
A
Congress leader speaking on condition of anonymity said, āThe dinner
sends a message to allies that while Rahul is president of the Congress
party, Sonia Gandhi would actively be part of negotiating a possible
alliance before the elections.'’
