The idea of God or Creator in Buddhism

In this modern world we see that almost all the people believe in God,
the one who created this earth and the universe. He is almighty, the
creator of everything, omnipotent, omnipresent and so and so. I was
wondering what Lord Buddha would have said about this idea.

Recently when I was going through the Brahma Net Discourse of Tipitaka
(the holy book of Buddhists), I found that it had already been told
there about 2600 years ago! In that Discourse the Buddha said,

“There are, monks, other matters, profound, hard to see, hard to
understand, peaceful, excellent, beyond mere thought, subtle, to be
experienced by the wise, which the Tathágata, (the Buddha addresses
Himself as Tathagata), having realized them by his own super-knowledge,
proclaims, and about which those who would truthfully praise the
Tathágata would rightly speak. And what are these matters?”

“There comes a time, monks, sooner or later after a long period, when
this world contracts. At a time of contraction, beings are mostly reborn
in the Abhassara Brahma world. And there they dwell, mind-made, feeding
on delight, self-luminous, moving through the air, glorious - and they
stay like that for a very long time.”

“But the time comes, sooner
or later after a long period, when this world begins to expand. In this
expanding world an empty palace of Brahma appears. And then one being,
from exhaustion of his life-span or of his merits, falls from the
Abhassara world and arises in the empty Brahma-palace. And there he
dwells, mind-made, feeding on delight, self-luminous, moving through the
air, glorious - and he stays like that for a very long time.”

“Then in this being who has been alone for so long there arises unrest,
discontent and worry, and he thinks: ‘Oh, if only some other beings
would come here!’ And other beings, from exhaustion of their life-span
or of their merits, fall from the Abhassara world and arise in the
Brahma palace as companions for this being. And there they dwell,
mind-made, … and they stay like that for a very long time.”

then, monks, that being who first arose there thinks: “I am Brahma, the
Great Brahma, the Conqueror, the Unconquered, the All-Seeing, the
All-Powerful, the Lord, the Maker and Creator, Ruler, Appointer and
Orderer, Father of All That Have Been and Shall Be. These beings were
created by me. How so? Because I first had this thought: ‘Oh, if only
some other beings would come here!’ That was my wish, and then these
beings came into this existence!” But those beings who arose
subsequently think: “This, friends, is Brahma, Great Brahma, the
Conqueror, the Unconquered, the All-Seeing, the All-Powerful, the Lord,
the Maker and Creator, Ruler, Appointer and Orderer, Father of All That
Have Been and Shall Be. How so? We have seen that he was here first, and
that we arose after him.”

“And this being that arose first is
longer-lived, more beautiful and more powerful than they are. And it may
happen that some being falls from that realm and arises in this world.
Having arisen in this world, he goes forth from the household life into
homelessness. Having gone forth, he by means of effort, exertion,
application, earnestness and right attention attains to such a degree of
mental concentration that he thereby recalls his last existence, but
recalls none before that. And he thinks: ‘That Brahma, … he made us, and
he is permanent, stable, eternal, not subject to change, the same for
ever and ever. But we who were created by that Brahma, we are
impermanent, unstable, short-lived, fated to fall away, and we have come
to this world.’ This is the first case where-by some ascetics and
Brahmins are partly Eternalists and partly Non-Eternalists.”

thereby recalled their last existence and said that That God or
Allah,…. He made us, He is permanent, omnipotent and so on. According
to Buddhism, this is one of the 62 wrong views and it serves nothing in
the path of deliverance and freedom.

Laos has remained a mystery to most Westerners even after the names of
its neighboring countries—Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand—have become
commonplace. Music of Laos: The Buddhist Tradition is the result of a
collaboration between the University of Applied Sciences in Emden,
Germany, and the Ministry of Information and Culture of Laos. If Laos is
still a mystery to the West, its music is even more obscure. As
producer Gisa Jähnichen points out, little research has been done on
musical practises in Laos. She determined that only 22 albums were ever
issued of Lao music—some on cassette only, many of dubious quality, and
most generally unavailable. Apart from the khen, most types of Lao music
were woefully under-recorded.

Buddhism has greatly affected both
the ‘classical’ ceremonial ensembles and the rural or ‘folk’ singing
and playing of the farmers and villages. Music happens at all the major
events in the Lao calendar, especially at the beginning of the New Year
and during full moons, and at weddings, funerals, and other special
occasions. The songs performed at these events are not haphazard; there
is a strong tradition of prayer and thanksgiving that can be heard at a
village wedding as clearly as at a grand temple festival. It is this
tradition that is represented on this recording.

Recording the
ceremonial ensemble of Champasak in Champasak province (which is the
source of the first four tracks on this collection) offered an
opportunity to record a fabulous set of instruments that had been made
in 1750 and are still in use. But in Xieng Khuang, Jähnichen’s crew
spent three days without water and electricity, and automotive repair
seems to have been as much a part of the production team’s job as the
actual recording.

The infrastructure of Laos is not up to modern
standards, and while the area of Luang Prabang was served by a new road,
unregulated irrigation by local farmers made it difficult to get very
far without having to alter course several times. Jähnichen also found
that the religious/ritual music of the province was far less accessible
than the classical court and entertainment styles. The last five tracks
on this collection come from Luang Prabang, featuring the Pi Mai
ensemble, and while they clearly feature a ‘classical’ ensemble and some
fairly obvious ‘popular’ tunes, they nevertheless show the pervasive
influence of Buddhism, as they were all part of the Buddhist New Year
celebration held in April.

Through it all, Jähnichen recorded as
much as she could. “We made a cross-section of actual music practices;
it was not our aim to record the whole musical history of a particular
ethnic group.” With her crew she documented 24 different ethnic groups
in Laos between June 1999 and May 2001. They made nearly 1000 audio
recordings totaling almost 80 hours of material. Music of Laos: The
Buddhist Tradition is obviously just a sample of the resulting archives.
This volume, as the title indicates, serves merely to hint at the
enormous presence and impact of Buddhist thought in various forms of Lao
