The Maha Satipaṭṭhāna Sutta The Discourse on the Establishing of
Mindfulness) and the Mahāsatipaṭṭhāna Sutta (The Great Discourse on the
Establishing of Mindfulness) are two of the most important and widely
studied discourses in the Pali Canon of Theravada Buddhism. The former
is also found in the Āgamas of other early schools, and has been
embraced by contemporary Mahayana practitioners such as Thich Nhat Hanh.
These discourses provide a means for practicing mindfulness in a
variety of contexts and potentially continuously. Famously, the Buddha
declares at the beginning of this discourse:
“This is the direct way
[Pāli: ekāyano maggo monks, for the purification of beings, for the
overcoming of sorrow and lamentation, for the extinguishing of suffering
and grief, for walking on the path of truth, for the realization of
nibbāna.
The meditation techniques identified in this sutta can be
practiced individually or successively or in an interwoven

Evaṃ me sutaṃ:

Ekaṃ samayaṃ bhagavā kurūsu viharati kammāsadhammaṃ nāma kurūnaṃ nigamo. Tatra kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi:

– Bhikkhavo ti. – Bhaddante ti te bhikkhū bhagavato paccassosuṃ. Bhagavā etad-avoca:


– Ekāyano ayaṃ, bhikkhave, maggo sattānaṃ visuddhiyā, soka-paridevānaṃ
samatikkamāya, dukkha-domanassānaṃ atthaṅgamāya, ñāyassa adhigamāya,
nibbānassa sacchikiriyāya, yadidaṃ cattāro satipaṭṭhānā.

Katame
cattāro? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu kāye kāyānupassī viharati ātāpī
sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhā-domanassaṃ. Vedanāsu
vedanānupassī viharati ātāpī sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke
abhijjhā-domanassaṃ. Citte cittānupassī viharati ātāpī sampajāno satimā,
vineyya loke abhijjhā-domanassaṃ. Dhammesu dhammānupassī viharati ātāpī
sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhā-domanassaṃ.

I. Kāyānupassanā

A. Ānāpāna Pabba


Katha·ñ·ca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu kāye kāyānupassī viharati? Idha,
bhikkhave, bhikkhu arañña-gato vā rukkha-mūla-gato vā suññ·āgāra-gato vā
nisīdati pallaṅkaṃ ābhujitvā ujuṃ kāyaṃ paṇidhāya parimukhaṃ satiṃ
upaṭṭhapetvā. So sato·va assasati, sato·va passasati. Dīghaṃ vā
assasanto ‘dīghaṃ assasāmī’ ti pajānāti; dīghaṃ vā passasanto ‘dīghaṃ
passasāmī’ ti pajānāti; rassaṃ vā assasanto ‘rassaṃ assasāmī’ ti
pajānāti; rassaṃ vā passasanto ‘rassaṃ passasāmī’ ti
pajānāti;’sabba-kāya-paṭisaṃvedī assasissāmī’ ti sikkhati;
’sabba-kāya-paṭisaṃvedī passasissāmī’ ti sikkhati; ‘passambhayaṃ
kāya-saṅkhāraṃ assasissāmī’ ti sikkhati; ‘passambhayaṃ kāya-saṅkhāraṃ
passasissāmī’ ti sikkhati.

Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, dakkho
bhamakāro vā bhamakār·antevāsī vā dīghaṃ vā añchanto ‘dīghaṃ añchāmī’ ti
pajānāti; rassaṃ vā añchanto ‘rassaṃ añchāmī’ ti pajānāti; evameva kho,
bhikkhave, bhikkhu dīghaṃ vā assasanto ‘dīghaṃ assasāmī’ ti pajānāti;
dīghaṃ vā passasanto ‘dīghaṃ passasāmī’ ti pajānāti; rassaṃ vā assasanto
‘rassaṃ assasāmī’ ti pajānāti; rassaṃ vā passasanto ‘rassaṃ passasāmī’

‘ṭhitomhī’ ti pajānāti, nisinno vā ‘nisinnomhī’ ti pajānāti, sayāno vā
‘sayānomhī’ ti pajānāti. Yathā yathā vā pan·assa kāyo paṇihito hoti,
tathā tathā naṃ pajānāti.

Iti ajjhattaṃ vā kāye kāyānupassī
viharati, bahiddhā vā kāye kāyānupassī viharati, ajjhatta-bahiddhā vā
kāye kāyānupassī viharati; samudaya-dhamm·ānupassī vā kāyasmiṃ viharati,

Puna ca·paraṃ,
bhikkhave, bhikkhu abhikkante paṭikkante sampajānakārī hoti, ālokite
vilokite sampajānakārī hoti, samiñjite pasārite sampajānakārī hoti,
saṅghāṭi-patta-cīvara-dhāraṇe sampajānakārī hoti, asite pīte khāyite
sāyite sampajānakārī hoti, uccāra-passāva-kamme sampajānakārī hoti, gate
ṭhite nisinne sutte jāgarite bhāsite tuṇhībhāve sampajānakārī hoti.


Iti ajjhattaṃ vā kāye kāyānupassī viharati, bahiddhā vā kāye
kāyānupassī viharati, ajjhatta-bahiddhā vā kāye kāyānupassī viharati;
samudaya-dhamm·ānupassī vā kāyasmiṃ viharati, vaya-dhamm·ānupassī vā
kāyasmiṃ viharati, samudaya-vaya-dhamm·ānupassī vā kāyasmiṃ viharati;

D. Paṭikūlamanasikāra Pabba


Puna ca·paraṃ, bhikkhave, bhikkhu imam·eva kāyaṃ, uddhaṃ pādatalā adho
kesa·matthakā, taca·pariyantaṃ pūraṃ nānappakārassa asucino
paccavekkhati: ‘Atthi imasmiṃ kāye kesā lomā nakhā dantā taco maṃsaṃ
nhāru aṭṭhi aṭṭhimiñjaṃ vakkaṃ hadayaṃ yakanaṃ kilomakaṃ pihakaṃ
papphāsaṃ antaṃ antaguṇaṃ udariyaṃ karīsaṃ pittaṃ semhaṃ pubbo lohitaṃ
sedo medo assu vasā kheḷo siṅghāṇikā lasikā muttaṃ’ ti.


Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, ubhatomukhā putoḷi pūrā nānāvihitassa dhaññassa,
seyyathidaṃ sālīnaṃ vīhīnaṃ muggānaṃ māsānaṃ tilānaṃ taṇḍulānaṃ.Tamenaṃ
cakkhumā puriso muñcitvā paccavekkheyya: ‘Ime sālī ime vīhī, ime muggā,
ime māsā, ime tilā, ime taṇḍulā’ ti; evameva kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu
imam·eva kāyaṃ, uddhaṃ pādatalā adho kesa·matthakā, taca·pariyantaṃ

dhātuso paccavekkhati: ‘Atthi imasmiṃ kāye pathavī·dhātu āpo·dhātū
tejo·dhātū vāyo·dhātū’ ti.

Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, dakkho
goghātako vā goghātak·antevāsī vā gāviṃ vadhitvā catu·mahā·pathe bilaso
vibhajitvā nisinno assa; evameva kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu imam·eva kāyaṃ
yathā·ṭhitaṃ yathā·paṇihitaṃ dhātuso paccavekkhati: ‘Atthi imasmiṃ kāye

uddhumātakaṃ vinīlakaṃ vipubbaka·jātaṃ, so imam·eva kāyaṃ upasaṃharati:
‘ayaṃ pi kho kāyo evaṃ·dhammo evaṃ·bhāvī evaṃ·an·atīto’ ti.

Iti
ajjhattaṃ vā kāye kāyānupassī viharati, bahiddhā vā kāye kāyānupassī
viharati, ajjhatta-bahiddhā vā kāye kāyānupassī viharati;

byagghehi vā khajjamānaṃ dīpīhi vā khajjamānaṃ siṅgālehi vā khajjamānaṃ
vividhehi vā pāṇaka·jātehi khajjamānaṃ, so imam·eva kāyaṃ upasaṃharati:
‘ayaṃ pi kho kāyo evaṃ·dhammo evaṃ·bhāvī evaṃ·an·atīto’ ti.

ti.

Iti ajjhattaṃ vā kāye kāyānupassī viharati, bahiddhā vā kāye

II. Vedanānupassanā

Kathaṃ ca pana, bhikkhave, bhikkhu vedanāsu vedanānupassī viharati?


Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sukhaṃ vā vedanaṃ vedayamāno ‘sukhaṃ vedanaṃ
vedayāmī’ ti pajānāti; dukkhaṃ vā vedanaṃ vedayamāno ‘dukkhaṃ vedanaṃ
vedayāmī’ ti pajānāti; a·dukkham-a·sukhaṃ vā vedanaṃ vedayamāno
‘a·dukkham-a·sukhaṃ vedanaṃ vedayāmī’ ti pajānāti. Sāmisaṃ vā sukhaṃ
vedanaṃ vedayamāno ‘sāmisaṃ sukhaṃ vedanaṃ vedayāmī’ ti pajānāti;
nirāmisaṃ vā sukhaṃ vedanaṃ vedayamāno ‘nirāmisaṃ sukhaṃ vedanaṃ

tesaṃ tesaṃ sattānaṃ tamhi tamhi satta-nikāye jarā jīraṇatā khaṇḍiccaṃ
pāliccaṃ valittacatā āyuno saṃhāni indriyānaṃ paripāko: ayaṃ vuccati,

E4. Maggasacca Niddesa


Katamaṃ ca, bhikkhave, dukkha·nirodha·gāminī paṭipadā ariya·saccaṃ?
Ayam·eva ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo, seyyathidaṃ sammādiṭṭhi, sammāsaṅkappo,
sammāvācā, sammākammanto, sammā-ājīvo, sammāvāyāmo, sammāsati,
sammāsamādhi.

Katamā ca, bhikkhave, sammādiṭṭhi? Yaṃ kho,
bhikkhave, dukkhe ñāṇaṃ, dukkha-samudaye ñāṇaṃ , dukkha-nirodhe ñāṇaṃ,
dukkha-nirodha-gāminiyā paṭipadāya ñāṇaṃ ayaṃ vuccati, bhikkhave,
sammādiṭṭhi.

Katamo ca, bhikkhave, sammāsaṅkappo? Yo kho,
bhikkhave, nekkhamma-saṅkappo , abyāpāda-saṅkappo, avihiṃsā-saṅkappo
ayaṃ vuccati, bhikkhave, sammāsaṅkappo.

Katamā ca, bhikkhave,
sammāvācā? Yā kho, bhikkhave, musāvādā veramaṇī, pisuṇāya vācāya
veramaṇī, pharusāya vācāya veramaṇī, samphappalāpā veramaṇī ayaṃ
vuccati, bhikkhave, sammāvācā.

Katamo ca, bhikkhave,
sammā-kammanto? Yā kho, bhikkhave, pāṇātipātā veramaṇī, adinnādānā
veramaṇī, abrahmacariyā veramaṇī ayaṃ vuccati, bhikkhave,
sammā-kammanto.

Katamo ca, bhikkhave, sammā-ājīvo? Idha,
bhikkhave, ariya-sāvako micchā-ājīvaṃ pahāya sammā-ājīvena jīvitaṃ
kappeti ayaṃ vuccati, bhikkhave, sammā-ājīvo.

Katamo ca,
bhikkhave, sammāvāyāmo? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu anuppannānaṃ pāpakānaṃ
akusalānaṃ dhammānaṃ anuppādāya chandaṃ janeti vāyamati vīriyaṃ ārabhati
cittaṃ paggaṇhāti padahati; uppannānaṃ pāpakānaṃ akusalānaṃ dhammānaṃ
pahānāya chandaṃ janeti vāyamati vīriyaṃ ārabhati cittaṃ paggaṇhāti
padahati; anuppannānaṃ kusalānaṃ dhammānaṃ uppādāya chandaṃ janeti
vāyamati vīriyaṃ ārabhati cittaṃ paggaṇhāti padahati; uppannānaṃ
kusalānaṃ dhammānaṃ ṭhitiyā asammosāya bhiyyobhāvāya vepullāya bhāvanāya
pāripūriyā chandaṃ janeti vāyamati vīriyaṃ ārabhati cittaṃ paggaṇhāti
padahati. Ayaṃ vuccati, bhikkhave, sammāvāyāmo.

Katamā ca,
bhikkhave, sammāsati? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu kāye kāyānupassī viharati
ātāpī sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhā-domanassaṃ. Vedanāsu
vedanānupassī viharati ātāpī sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke
abhijjhā-domanassaṃ. Citte cittānupassī viharati ātāpī sampajāno satimā,
vineyya loke abhijjhā-domanassaṃ. Dhammesu dhammānupassī viharati ātāpī
sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhā-domanassaṃ. Ayaṃ vuccati,
bhikkhave, sammāsati.

Katamo ca, bhikkhave, sammāsamādhi? Idha,
bhikkhave, bhikkhu vivicceva kāmehi vivicca akusalehi dhammehi
savitakkaṃ savicāraṃ vivekajaṃ pītisukhaṃ paṭhamaṃ jhānaṃ upasampajja
viharati. Vitakkavicārānaṃ vūpasamā ajjhattaṃ sampasādanaṃ cetaso
ekodibhāvaṃ avitakkaṃ avicāraṃ samādhijaṃ pītisukhaṃ dutiyaṃ jhānaṃ
upasampajja viharati. Pītiyā ca virāgā upekkhako ca viharati sato ca
sampajāno, sukhañca kāyena paṭisaṃvedeti yaṃ taṃ ariyā ācikkhanti:
‘upekkhako satimā sukhavihārī’ti tatiyaṃ jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati.
Sukhassa ca pahānā dukkhassa ca pahānā pubbeva somanassa-domanassānaṃ
atthaṅgamā adukkham-asukhaṃ upekkhā-sati-pārisuddhiṃ catutthaṃ jhānaṃ
upasampajja viharati. Ayaṃ vuccati, bhikkhave, sammāsamādhi ti.

Idaṃ vuccati, bhikkhave, dukkha·nirodha·gāminī paṭipadā ariya·saccaṃ.


Iti ajjhattaṃ vā dhammesu dhammānupassī viharati, bahiddhā vā dhammesu
dhammānupassī viharati, ajjhatta-bahiddhā vā dhammesu dhammānupassī
viharati; samudaya-dhamm·ānupassī vā dhammesu viharati,
vaya-dhamm·ānupassī vā dhammesu viharati, samudaya-vaya-dhamm·ānupassī
vā dhammesu viharati; ‘atthi dhammā’ ti vā pan·assa sati paccupaṭṭhitā
hoti, yāvadeva ñāṇa·mattāya paṭissati·mattāya, a·nissito ca viharati, na
ca kiñci loke upādiyati. Evam·pi kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu dhammesu
dhammānupassī viharati, catūsu ariyasaccesu.

Satipaṭṭhānabhāvanā Nisaṃsa


Yo hi koci, bhikkhave, ime cattāro satipaṭṭhāne evaṃ bhāveyya
satta·vassāni, tassa dvinnaṃ phalānaṃ aññataraṃ phalaṃ pāṭikaṅkhaṃ:
diṭṭheva dhamme aññā, sati vā upādisese anāgāmitā.

Tiṭṭhantu,
bhikkhave, satta·vassāni. Yo hi koci, bhikkhave, ime cattāro
satipaṭṭhāne evaṃ bhāveyya cha vassāni, tassa dvinnaṃ phalānaṃ aññataraṃ

phalaṃ pāṭikaṅkhaṃ: diṭṭheva dhamme aññā, atthi vā upādisese anāgāmitā.


‘Ekāyano ayaṃ, bhikkhave, maggo sattānaṃ visuddhiyā, soka-paridevānaṃ
samatikkamāya, dukkha-domanassānaṃ atthaṅgamāya, ñāyassa adhigamāya,
nibbānassa sacchikiriyāya, yadidaṃ cattāro satipaṭṭhānā’ ti. Iti yaṃ taṃ
vuttaṃ, idam·etaṃ paṭicca vuttaṃ ti.

Idam·avoca bhagavā. Attamanā te bhikkhū bhagavato bhāsitaṃ abhinanduṃ ti.
