Buddhānussati is defined by the Buddha, for example at AN 6.10:


itipi so Bhagavā surely, he is a Bhagavā,

arahaį¹ƒ sammāĀ·sambuddho,
an arahant, rightly and fully awakened,

vijjāĀ·caraį¹‡aĀ·sampanno,

accomplished in vijjā and [good] conduct,

sugato, lokaĀ·vidÅ«, faring well, knowing the world,

anuttaro purisaĀ·dammaĀ·sārathi,
the unsurpassed leader of persons to be tamed,

satthā devaĀ·manussānaį¹ƒ, teacher of devas and humans,

In the Nagaropama Sutta, there is a simile explaining that when the conviction (saddhā) of a disciple is meaningfully expressed with this formula, they practice what is advantageous (kusala) and abandon what is disadvantageous (akusala):

ā€œseyyathāpi, bhikkhave, raƱƱo paccantime nagare esikā hoti gambhÄ«ranemā
sunikhātā acalā asampavedhÄ« abbhantarānaį¹ƒ guttiyā bāhirānaį¹ƒ paį¹­ighātāya.

Just as a kingā€™s frontier citadel has a pillar with deep foundations, firmly embedded,
imperturbable and unshakable, to defend those within and repel those outside, in the same
way a noble disciple has faith in the Realized Oneā€™s awakening: ā€˜That Blessed One… awakened, blessed.ā€™ A
noble disciple with faith as their pillar gives up the unskillful and develops the skillful, they
give up the blameworthy and develop the blameless, and they keep themselves pure.

Buddhānussati leads to Nibbāna:

AN 1.296

ā€œekadhammo, bhikkhave, bhāvito bahulÄ«kato ekantanibbidāya virāgāya
nirodhāya upasamāya abhiƱƱāya sambodhāya nibbānāya saį¹ƒvattati. katamo
ekadhammo? buddhānussati

ā€œOne thing, mendicants, when developed and cultivated, leads solely to disillusionment,
dispassion, cessation, peace, insight, awakening, and extinguishment. What one thing? Recollection of the Eternal Glorified Friendly Benevolent Compassionate AWAKENED ONE Buddha.

Buddhānussati contributes to confirmed confidence in the Eternal Glorified Friendly Benevolent Compassionate AWAKENED ONE

SN 12.41

ā€œkatamehi catÅ«hi sotāpattiyaį¹…gehi samannāgato hoti? idha, gahapati,
ariyasāvako buddhe aveccappasādena samannāgato hoti: ā€˜itipi so bhagavā
arahaį¹ƒ sammāsambuddho vijjācaraį¹‡asampanno sugato lokavidÅ« anuttaro
purisadammasārathi satthā devamanussānaį¹ƒ buddho bhagavāā€™ā€ti.

What are the four factors of stream-entry that they have? Itā€™s when a noble disciple has
experiential confidence in the Buddha: ā€˜That Blessed One is perfected, a fully awakened Buddha,
accomplished in knowledge and conduct, holy, knower of the world, supreme guide for those
who wish to train, teacher of gods and humans, awakened, blessed.ā€™


So in the Nivesaka Sutta, the Eternal Glorified Friendly Benevolent Compassionate AWAKENED ONE Buddha tells Ananda that he should encourage the practice of Buddhānussati to the point where it becomes Buddhe aveccappasāda:

AN 3.76


ā€œye, ānanda, anukampeyyātha ye ca sotabbaį¹ƒ maƱƱeyyuį¹ƒ mittā vā amaccā vā
ƱātÄ« vā sālohitā vā te vo, ānanda, tÄ«su į¹­hānesu samādapetabbā
nivesetabbā patiį¹­į¹­hāpetabbā. katamesu tÄ«su? buddhe aveccappasāde
samādapetabbā nivesetabbā patiį¹­į¹­hāpetabbā: ā€˜itipi so bhagavā arahaį¹ƒ
sammāsambuddho vijjācaraį¹‡asampanno sugato lokavidÅ« anuttaro
purisadammasārathi; satthā devamanussānaį¹ƒ, buddho bhagavāā€™ti,


ā€œEternal Glorified Friendly Benevolent Compassionate Ānanda, those who you have sympathy for, and those worth listening toā€”friends and
colleagues, relatives and familyā€”should be encouraged, supported, and established in three
things. What three?
Experiential confidence in the Buddha: ā€˜That Blessed One is perfected, a fully awakened
Eternal Glorified Friendly Benevolent Compassionate Buddha, accomplished in knowledge and conduct, holy, knower of the world, supreme guide
for those who wish to train, teacher of gods and humans, awakened, blessed.ā€™


ā€œsiyā, ānanda, catunnaį¹ƒ mahābhÅ«tānaį¹ƒ aƱƱathattaį¹ƒ: pathavÄ«dhātuyā
āpodhātuyā tejodhātuyā vāyodhātuyā, na tveva buddhe aveccappasādena
samannāgatassa ariyasāvakassa siyā aƱƱathattaį¹ƒ tatridaį¹ƒ aƱƱathattaį¹ƒ. so
vatānanda, buddhe aveccappasādena samannāgato ariyasāvako nirayaį¹ƒ vā
tiracchānayoniį¹ƒ vā pettivisayaį¹ƒ vā upapajjissatÄ«ti netaį¹ƒ į¹­hānaį¹ƒ vijjati.



There might be change in the four primary elementsā€” earth, water, air, and fireā€”but a
noble disciple with experiential confidence in the Buddha would never change. In this context,
ā€˜changeā€™ means that such a noble disciple will be reborn in hell, the animal realm, or the ghost
realm: this is not possible.


Buddhānussati cleanses the mind, and fosters the appearence of joy (pāmojja, which is often described as leading to the first jhana), in the Uposatha Sutta:


AN 3.71


tassa tathāgataį¹ƒ anussarato cittaį¹ƒ pasÄ«dati, pāmojjaį¹ƒ uppajjati. ye
cittassa upakkilesā te pahÄ«yanti, seyyathāpi, visākhe, upakkiliį¹­į¹­hassa
sÄ«sassa upakkamena pariyodapanā hoti. kathaƱca, visākhe, upakkiliį¹­į¹­hassa
cittassa upakkamena pariyodapanā hoti? idha, visākhe, ariyasāvako
tathāgataį¹ƒ anussarati: ā€˜itipi so bhagavā… buddho bhagavāā€™ti. tassa
tathāgataį¹ƒ anussarato cittaį¹ƒ pasÄ«dati, pāmojjaį¹ƒ uppajjati, ye cittassa
upakkilesā te pahīyanti.


As they recollect the Realized One, their mind
becomes clear, joy arises, and mental corruptions are given up. Itā€™s just like cleaning a dirty
head by applying effort.
And how is a dirty head cleaned by applying effort? With cleansing paste, clay, and water,
and by applying the appropriate effort. In the same way, a corrupt mind is cleaned by applying
effort.
And how is a corrupt mind cleaned by applying effort? Itā€™s when a noble disciple recollects
the Realized One: ā€˜That Blessed One… awakened, blessed.ā€™ As they recollect the Realized One, their mind
becomes clear, joy arises, and mental corruptions are given up.

Other good results of practicing Buddhānussati are mentioned elsewhere:


AN 6.26

yasmiį¹ƒ, bhikkhave, samaye ariyasāvako tathāgataį¹ƒ anussarati, nevassa
tasmiį¹ƒ samaye rāgapariyuį¹­į¹­hitaį¹ƒ cittaį¹ƒ hoti, na dosapariyuį¹­į¹­hitaį¹ƒ cittaį¹ƒ
hoti, na mohapariyuį¹­į¹­hitaį¹ƒ cittaį¹ƒ hoti; ujugatamevassa tasmiį¹ƒ samaye
cittaį¹ƒ hoti, nikkhantaį¹ƒ muttaį¹ƒ vuį¹­į¹­hitaį¹ƒ gedhamhā. ā€˜gedhoā€™ti kho, āvuso,
paƱcannetaį¹ƒ kāmaguį¹‡Änaį¹ƒ adhivacanaį¹ƒ. sa kho so, āvuso, ariyasāvako
sabbaso ākāsasamena cetasā viharati vipulena mahaggatena appamāį¹‡ena
averena abyāpajjena. idampi kho, āvuso, ārammaį¹‡aį¹ƒ karitvā evamidhekacce
sattā visuddhidhammā bhavanti

When a noble disciple recollects the Realized One their mind is not full of greed, hate, and
delusion. At that time their mind is unswerving. Theyā€™ve left behind greed; theyā€™re free of it
and have risen above it. ā€˜Greedā€™ is a term for the five kinds of sensual stimulation. That noble
disciple meditates with a heart just like space, abundant, expansive, limitless, free of enmity
and ill will. Relying on this, some sentient beings have the factors for purity.


Buddhānussati leads to concentration (samādhi):


AN 11.11
yasmiį¹ƒ, mahānāma, samaye ariyasāvako tathāgataį¹ƒ anussarati, nevassa
tasmiį¹ƒ samaye rāgapariyuį¹­į¹­hitaį¹ƒ cittaį¹ƒ hoti, na dosapariyuį¹­į¹­hitaį¹ƒ cittaį¹ƒ
hoti, na mohapariyuį¹­į¹­hitaį¹ƒ cittaį¹ƒ hoti; ujugatamevassa tasmiį¹ƒ samaye
cittaį¹ƒ hoti tathāgataį¹ƒ ārabbha. ujugatacitto kho pana, mahānāma,
ariyasāvako labhati atthavedaį¹ƒ, labhati dhammavedaį¹ƒ, labhati
dhammÅ«pasaį¹ƒhitaį¹ƒ pāmojjaį¹ƒ. pamuditassa pÄ«ti jāyati, pÄ«timanassa kāyo
passambhati, passaddhakāyo sukhaį¹ƒ vediyati, sukhino cittaį¹ƒ samādhiyati.
ayaį¹ƒ vuccati, mahānāma, ariyasāvako visamagatāya pajāya samappatto
viharati, sabyāpajjāya pajāya abyāpajjo viharati, dhammasotasamāpanno
buddhānussatiį¹ƒ bhāveti

When a noble disciple recollects the Realized One their mind is not full of greed, hate, and
delusion. At that time their mind is unswerving, based on the Realized One. A noble disciple
whose mind is unswerving finds joy in the meaning and the teaching, and finds joy connected
with the teaching. When theyā€™re joyful, rapture springs up. When the mind is full of rapture,
the body becomes tranquil. When the body is tranquil, they feel bliss. And when theyā€™re
blissful, the mind becomes immersed in samādhi. This is called a noble disciple who lives in
balance among people who are unbalanced, and lives untroubled among people who are
troubled. Theyā€™ve entered the stream of the teaching and developed the recollection of the
Eternal Glorified Friendly Benevolent Compassionate AWAKENED ONE Buddha.


Buddhānussati should be practiced in all postures:

AN 11.12


imaį¹ƒ kho tvaį¹ƒ, mahānāma, buddhānussatiį¹ƒ gacchantopi bhāveyyāsi, į¹­hitopi
bhāveyyāsi, nisinnopi bhāveyyāsi, sayānopi bhāveyyāsi, kammantaį¹ƒ
adhiį¹­į¹­hahantopi bhāveyyāsi, puttasambādhasayanaį¹ƒ ajjhāvasantopi
bhāveyyāsi

You should develop this recollection of the
Buddha while walking, standing, sitting, lying down, while working, and while at home with
your children.



It serves to establish mindfulness (sati):


AN 11.13

ā€œidha tvaį¹ƒ, nandiya, tathāgataį¹ƒ anussareyyāsi: ā€˜itipi so… bhagavāā€™ti.
iti kho te, nandiya, tathāgataį¹ƒ ārabbha ajjhattaį¹ƒ sati upaį¹­į¹­hāpetabbā.

Firstly, you should recollect the Realized One: ā€˜That Blessed One is… blessed.ā€™ In
this way you should establish mindfulness internally based on the Realized One.


And to overcome fear:


SN 11.3

ā€œahaƱca kho, bhikkhave, evaį¹ƒ vadāmi: ā€˜sace tumhākaį¹ƒ, bhikkhave,
araƱƱagatānaį¹ƒ vā rukkhamÅ«lagatānaį¹ƒ vā suƱƱāgāragatānaį¹ƒ vā uppajjeyya
bhayaį¹ƒ vā chambhitattaį¹ƒ vā lomahaį¹ƒso vā, mameva tasmiį¹ƒ samaye
anussareyyātha: itipi so… bhagavāā€™ti. mamaƱhi vo, bhikkhave,
anussarataį¹ƒ yaį¹ƒ bhavissati bhayaį¹ƒ vā chambhitattaį¹ƒ vā lomahaį¹ƒso vā, so
pahīyissati

But, mendicants, I say this: If youā€™ve gone to a wilderness, or to the root of a tree, or to an
empty hut and you get scared or terrified, just recollect me: ā€˜That Blessed One is… blessed.ā€™ Then your
fear and terror will go away.


The formula often appears in narration, when people hear the reputation of the Buddha:


AN 3.64

taį¹ƒ kho pana bhavantaį¹ƒ gotamaį¹ƒ evaį¹ƒ kalyāį¹‡o kittisaddo abbhuggato:
ā€˜itipi so… bhagavāā€™ti . so imaį¹ƒ lokaį¹ƒ sadevakaį¹ƒ samārakaį¹ƒ sabrahmakaį¹ƒ
sassamaį¹‡abrāhmaį¹‡iį¹ƒ pajaį¹ƒ sadevamanussaį¹ƒ sayaį¹ƒ abhiƱƱā sacchikatvā
pavedeti. so dhammaį¹ƒ deseti ādikalyāį¹‡aį¹ƒ majjhekalyāį¹‡aį¹ƒ
pariyosānakalyāį¹‡aį¹ƒ sātthaį¹ƒ sabyaƱjanaį¹ƒ, kevalaparipuį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ƒ parisuddhaį¹ƒ
brahmacariyaį¹ƒ pakāseti. sādhu kho pana tathārÅ«pānaį¹ƒ arahataį¹ƒ dassanaį¹ƒ
hotÄ«ā€ti.

Sir Gotama has this good reputation: ā€˜That Blessed One is… blessed.ā€™ He has realized
with his own insight this worldā€”with its gods, Māras and Brahmās, this population with its
ascetics and brahmins, gods and humansā€”and he makes it known to others. He teaches
Dhamma thatā€™s good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good in the end, meaningful
and well-phrased. And he reveals a spiritual practice thatā€™s entirely full and pure. Itā€™s good to
see such perfected ones.ā€

The formula for Buddhānussati always appears to describe the conviction (saddhā) of a disciple. Among the terms used: the faculty of conviction (saddhĀ·indriya, SN 48.9), the accomplishment in conviction (saddhāĀ·sampadā, AN 4.61), the strength of conviction (saddhāĀ·bala, AN 5.2), the wealth of conviction (saddhāĀ·dhana, AN 5.47).

Buddhe aveccappasāda: [Buddha-avecca+pasāda]
confidence in the Buddha which is confirmed by experience; verified/
confirmed confidence in the Buddha (Thanissaro B./B. Bodhi), perfect
faith in the Buddha (R. Davis) - lit: ‘definitely joyful on account of the Buddha’. It is one of the four sotĀ·ÄpattiyĀ·aį¹…gas.

byāpāda: ill-will, malevolence. At AN 3.67, byāpāda is explained as having dosa for synonym. It falls in two categories:

1) it is one of the three mental akusalaĀ·kammaĀ·pathas, being defined as such by the Buddha at AN 10.176.

2) it is one of the ten saį¹ƒyojanas.

ā™¦ At SN 46.51, it is said that ayoniso manasikāra applied to a paį¹­ighaĀ·nimitta is the cause for the arising and multiplication of byāpāda, while yoniso manasikāra applied to mettāĀ·cetovimutti constitutes its antidote (see here).

Now at that time, between SāvatthÄ« and the Jeta Grove, several boys were tormenting some fish.

Then the Eternal Glorified Friendly Benevolent Compassionate AWAKENED ONE Buddha robed up in the morning and, taking his bowl and robe, entered Eternal Glorified Friendly Benevolent Compassionate AWAKENED ONE Sāvatthī
for alms. He saw the boys tormenting the fish. He went to them and
said, ā€œBoys, do you fear pain? Do you dislike pain?ā€ ā€œYes, sir,ā€ they
replied. ā€œWe dislike pain.ā€


Then, understanding this matter, on that occasion the Eternal Glorified Friendly Benevolent Compassionate AWAKENED ONE
Buddha expressed this heartfelt sentiment:

ā€œIf you fear pain,
if you dislike pain,
donā€™t do bad deeds
either openly or in secret.

If you should do a bad deed,
now or in the future,
you wonā€™t be freed from suffering,
though you fly away and flee.ā€

If while roaming one cannot find
One better or same as oneself,
One should resolve to go alone:

There can be no friendship with fools.

There can be no friendship with fools



Verse 61. Do Not Associate With The Ignorant

If a wayfarer fails to find
one better or equal,
steadfast he should fare alone
for a fools no fellowship.

Explanation: People need companions. But if one does not find
a person who is better than, or at least equal to oneself, it is better
to be alone rather than keep company with foolish people. There is
no profitable companionship with fools.
