Ms. Mayawati today extended her heartiest felicitations and good
wishes to the people of the state on the 118th birth anniversary of the
architect of the Indian Constitution Baba Saheb Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar.
In a message here, the CM said Dr Ambedkar strived for the cause of the
dalits, backwards, minorities and the exploited people. The society
would remember his contribution in the uplift of minority people, she
added.
MAYAWATI SEEMS to be the perfect choice for the royal families of
Uttar Pradesh when it comes to realising their political ambitions. The
recent flurry of activity in parts of Uttar Pradesh proves just that.
It began with the erstwhile Raja of Ayodhya, Bimlendra Mohan Pratap
Mishra’s plunge into politics when he joined the Bahujan Samaj Party
(BSP.)
Raja Anandsingh of Mankapur and his son Kirtivardhan Singh from Gonda
followed next. They ventured into the BSP after a stint with the
Samajwadi Party.
And now it is the Raja of Daryabad, Rai Swareshwar Bali alias Sanjay
Bali, who joined the BSP in the BSP joining meeting on March 26 held in
Daryabad. The meeting was headed by Lalji Verma, Finance and
Parliamentary Affairs Minister in the UP Government.
The head of the erstwhile ruling family of Daryabad joined the party along with 150 members of local bodies.
According to sources, it is under Bali’s influence that the Chairmen of
the Nagar Panchayats of Daryabad and Tikaitnagar, Mateen Ahmed Khan and
Jagdish Prasad Gupta respectively, joined the BSP on Wednesday.
As a mark of solidarity with Sanjay Bali, 1500 others too were granted
primary membership of the party. In a bid to mobilize the youth of the
constituency, Bali’s son Sanidhya Bali alias Samrat Bali delivered a
speech addressing the youngsters of the area which received a good
response as junior Bali was joined by hundreds of young supporters in a
padyatra from his house to the venue of the meeting.
Sanjay Bali is already in the peoples’ hearts because of the family’s
long and successful association with the town and adjoining areas and
this will give an edge to the BSP.
He left the SP because he felt the party betrayed him by not granting
him a ticket for the MLA elections despite his active participation in
the party’s activities for the past 12 years.
The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) has come out with its first list of 18 candidates from Gujarat for the Lok Sabha elections. “As
already announced the BSP would be fielding candidates from all the 26
Lok Sabha seats in Gujarat. The rest of the names of the candidates
would be announced early next week,” BSP’s Gujarat unit in-charge
Pyaarelal Jatav said Saturday.
He said the names of the nominees from the seats reserved for Scheduled
Tribe (ST) candidates were Ramsingh Kalara (Dahod), Prakash Bhil
(Chhota Udepur), Ranjana Gamit (Bardoli) and Chagan Patel (Valsad). The
candidates from constituencies reserved for Scheduled Castes (SC) were
Pravin Solanki (Ahmedabad-West) and Mohan Namori (Kutch)
The names of the other candidates are - Bhavesh Bhatt (Ahmedabad-East),
Suresh Mali (Banaskantha), Vikramsingh Ramalavat (Sabarkantha),
Rudratsingh Jhala (Mehsana), Mehboob Kokhar (Patan), Dalichand Patel
(Rajkot), Usha Patel (Amreli), Mukesh Patel (Anand), Ratansingh Chauhan
(Kheda), Samarnath Singh (Navsari), Prakash Barot (Panchmahals) and
Mehul Chandrawadia (Porbandar).
The Tamilnadu unit of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) tonight released
the first list of 24 candidates for the forthcoming Lok Sabha
elections. Party’s National General Secretary Dr Suresh Mane in the
presence of party’s National President Mayawati at an election campaign
rally said the candidates were the mixture of all communities of people.
Stating that the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) is always striving for
the welfare and uplift of the society, party chief and Uttar Pradesh
Chief Minister Mayawati said her party will form a role model government at the Centre if voted to power in the coming Lok Sabha polls.
Addressing an election campaign rally and a mammoth public meeting here
tonight, Ms Mayawati appealed to the voters of the state to vote for
BSP for a casteless society, equitable development, egalitarian
society, consistency in progress, rooting out terrorism, empowering
people, womens welfare, eradication of poverty and sustainable farming.
Dismissing the allegations that BSP is a caste-based party which
opposes the uppre castes, she said the party had given opportunity to
three from Brahmin community, three Muslims, Christians and other caste
people in the BSP candidates list to fight the Lok Sabha polls in Tamil
Nadu.
Urging the people to reject the anti-people Congress and BJP parties in
the polls, she said the BSP had neither fallen in the feet of any one
for forging an alliance nor did it pleaded to anyone for achieving
victory. She appealed to the party functionaries and workers to work
for the victory of the party in all the forty seats in Tamil Nadu and
Pondicherry.
Shimla, April 1 (IANS) Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Bahujan
Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati would start her party’s Lok Sabha
election campaign in Himachal Pradesh with a rally at Una town Thursday.
The rally at Una, 127 km from the state capital, would mark the start
of the BSP’s election campaign in the hill state, BSP Shimla district
president K.C. Bhatia told IANS Wednesday.
“Mayawati would also officially announce the party candidates for all the four seats in the state,” he said.
The hill state has four Lok Sabha seats - Shimla (Scheduled Castes
reserved), Mandi, Hamirpur and Kangra - and will go to the polls May 13.
Bhatia said S.N. Pathania would be the BSP’s candidate from the Kangra
seat, Lala Ram Sharma from Mandi and Mela Ram Sharma from Hamirpur.
Welcoming the Supreme Court decision on Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt,
BSP on Tuesday said that Samajwadi Party was expecting the decision and
only doing “drama”.
“Samajwadi Party were doing ‘dramebazi’ here as they were
expecting that such decision will be coming from the Supreme Court,”
said Satish Chandra Mishra, BSP national general secretary.
“BSP candidate (Akhilesh Das) from here is very strong and we will win the seat,” said Mishra.
Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court disallowed Dutt’s plea to contest the coming Lok Sabha elections.
The actor had been fielded by SP as its candidate for the Lucknow Lok Sabha seat.

The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) will contest all the 14 parliamentary
seats of Jharkhand and would have no tie-up with any other party, BSP
(Jharkhand) unit in-charge Brizlal Khabari said today.
Releasing the names of the candidates from 12 seats in Jharkhand,
Khabari said the names of the party contestants for Khunti and Ranchi
seat would be declared later.
He said BSP supremo and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati had cleared the names of the 12 candidates from Jharkhand.
BSP chief Mayawati has released the list of party candidates for all
the 80 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh (UP) and announced that she
would launch her nationwide campaign from Kerala tomorrow.
“Tomorrow,
I will kick-start the BSP national campaign from Kerala with a rally in
Thiruvananthapuram,” she told a press conference.
The UP Chief
Minister also released the party’s ‘Special Appeal’ to the electorate
in UP. “In the Special Appeal, I have raised certain issues and I will
urge them to vote for BSP based on those issues,” she said.
She said that she would be campaigning across the country non-stop from
tomorrow till May 11, but would take care of her official duties. “I
will always return to the state after campaigning. I will not neglect
the UP government,” she said.
The BSP Supremo said she would come out with the list of party candidates from rest of the country in four-five days.
New Delhi:
The Bahujan Samaj Party will not form an alliance with any other
political party for the general elections, said BSP chief and Uttar
Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on Sunday.
“This time the Bahujan Samaj Party will fight the elections on its own.
It will not align with any other political party,” Mayawati told
reporters at a function in New Delhi on the birth anniversary of BSP
founder Kanshi Ram.
“The BSP has decided to contest elections to the fifteenth Lok Sabha
all alone in all the states and it will have no electoral alliance with
any party before the polls,” said Mayawati. Watch Video

LUCKNOW: The rebel Samajwadi Party Member of Parliament from Moradabad,
Shafiqur Rehman Barq, joined the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) on Saturday
amid reports that he will contest the coming Lok Sabha election from
Sambhal in Moradabad district in Uttar Pradesh on the BSP ticket.
Mr. Barq met the BSP leader and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Mayawati,
before announcing his decision at a press conference here.
A former Congress MLA, Afroz Ali Khan, also joined the BSP along with him.
Mr. Barq accused Samajwadi Party president Mulayam Singh of playing the
“Hindu card” by aligning with former Bharatiya Janata Party leader
Kalyan Singh. Mr. Barq described Mr. Kalyan Singh as the demolisher of
the Babri Masjid.
Mr. Barq’s entry into the ruling party in the State was widely
anticipated after he was denied the Samajwadi Party nomination from
Sambhal for the coming Lok Sabha elections.
The Moradabad MP has joined the BSP within a fortnight of the former
Samajwadi MP from Gonda, Kirti Vardhan Singh, shifting his loyalties to
Ms. Mayawati.
Mr. Kirti Vardhan Singh, in fact, was given the Samajwadi ticket from
Gonda; yet he left the party. He will contest the Lok Sabha election
from Gonda on the BSP ticket.
Another Samajwadi MP, Afzal Ansari, also joined the BSP recently amid reports that he will contest the polls from Ghazipur.
Mahmud Zafar Rahmani, Sardar Javed, Haji Raees Ansari, Mohammad Hasan
and Haji Mukhtar from Rampur district also joined the BSP along with
Mr. Barq on Saturday.
Lucknow:
Former Indian cricketer Chetan Sharma has joined Bahujan Samaj Party
and was declared party candidate from Faridabad Lok Sabha seat of
Haryana. Mr. Sharma declared here on Sunday in presence of BSP national
general secretary Satish Chandra Mishra that he would contest the
coming Lok Sabha polls from Faridabad in Haryana.
Former Indian cricket team captain Kapil Dev congratulated Mr. Sharma
for his decision of joining politics and contesting elections. “I hope
that Mr. Sharma would succeed in the politics as well,” Mr. Dev said. http://www.thehindu.com/2009/02/10/stories/2009021050880300.htm
Lucknow,
Jan 9(UNI) Uttar Pradesh cooperative minister Swami Prasad Maurya has
been appointed the new president of the Uttar Pradesh unit of Bahujan
Samaj Party.
Mr Maurya, member of the state legislative council and the Cooperative
Minister, will replace Mr Narendra Singh Patel.
Announcing the decision, BSP supremo and chief minister Mayawati here
today said the name of Mr Maurya was decided in the meeting of the
party MP, MLAs and senior leaders here this afternoon.
She said that Mr Maurya has been selected to head the party in the
state as he is popular in all the district.
Ms Mayawati, however, clarified that there would be no change in the
state working committee of the party.

‘BSP has every right to have billionaires in fold’
Lucknow/New Delhi,
April 17 (IANS) The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) has every right to have
billionaires in its fold, like the other political parties, said a
party functionary Friday defending the Rs.604 crore (Rs.6.04 billion)
assets declared by a BSP candidate for a Delhi Lok Sabha seat.
Do
you mean to say that only the Congress, Samajwadi Party and the BJP
(Bharatiya Janata Party) have the right to have billionaires in their
party? The BSP is fighting for the cause of the downtrodden, but it
doesn’t mean that it is a party of poverty-ridden people,’ said a
senior party functionary in Lucknow.
‘Everyone in the party is not expected to be a very poor person,’ he added.
He was reacting to
the BSP’s West Delhi candidate Deepak Bhardwaj having emerged as the
country’s richest candidate in the Lok Sabha 2009 elections with assets
worth over Rs.600 crore (Rs.6 billion).
Bhardwaj, who owns
a fleet of cars, but went to file his nomination papers Thursday riding
an old tractor, has overtaken Independent candidate from Gujarat’s
Surendranagar seat, Khimji Patadia, who has assets worth Rs.514.57
crore.
Bhardwaj is making
his debut this elections. He has overshadowed his own partyman Kanwar
Singh Tanwar, BSP candidate from south Delhi, who has assets worth Rs
1.55 billion.
Ms Mayawati as the next Prime Minister needed the entire Budget of the Nation plus taking all steps to enact a
law for bringing back the illegal money from foreign bank accounts for fighting for the cause of not only the downtrodden but also the poor among the forward castes.
LUCKNOW - Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP)
supremo Mayawati Monday said she is ready to face any action if her
political rivals, particularly Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Mulayam Singh
Yadav, prove that she has any money stashed in foreign banks.
‘I openly challenge Mulayam Singh, who during his public meetings alleged that I have money deposited in foreign banks.
I am ready for any stringent action, if Mulayam or any of my political
opponents establish the allegations against me,’ Mayawati told a
gathering in Mirzapur district, 300 km from the state capital.
‘Unlike leaders of SP and other political parties, I don’t have even
a single penny deposited in foreign banks,’ she said, promising to
enact laws for bringing back the black money of Indian politicians and
others from foreign banks, if voted to power.
‘Once we assume power at the centre, we will make every effort to
enact the law for bringing back black money from banks abroad,’ said
Mayawati.
She attacked the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) and
the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for not taking any steps to enact a
law for bringing back the illegal money from foreign bank accounts.
Now, Madhuri magic for Maya’s party Stretching its social engineering project ~ beyond the shores of
India and the confines of the political spectrum, the Miss Mayawati’s
Bahujan Samaj Party has invited America-settled Hindi film actress
Madhuri Dixit to visit Pune and campaign for Mr DS Kulkarni, its
candidate for the Lok Sabha constituency.
Dixit had been a director on the board of
Mr Kulkarni’s Pune-based construction company ~ DSK Developers Private
Limited ~ for several years and that the actress and the BSP candidate may clinch the issue. Reports from Pune suggest
the erstwhile Bollywood top draw who is still popular and in demand by
filmmakers is likely to agree to campaign for Mr Kulkarni. Pune,
which goes to the polls in the second phase on 26 April, is known as
the “cultural capital” of Maharashtra and glories in the historical
fact that it was ruled by (Brahmin) Peshwa rulers before British
colonial subjugation. Mr Kulkarni is the most powerful builder of the city. But that doesn’t
prevent him from often beginning his campaign speech with the
invocation “Jai Bhim”, a reverential reference to BR Ambedkar. BSP
sources said the party was hopeful in
Maharashtra as Mr Kulkarni is in with a “winning chance”. “All he needs
is a little boost,” a BSP leader told The Statesman; and it’s that X
Factor, as it were, which Madhuri Dixit is expected to be if she
addresses a few rallies.
Indeed, the news that Bollywood’s dancing
diva may pitch in for the BSP candidate may be the last straw for the
Congress’ sitting MP Mr Suresh Kalmadi who is waging a grim battle to
retain his seat as the “caste combination” seems to be working in
favour of Mr Kulkarni. As it is, Mr Kalmadi is heavily dependent on the
Nationalist Congress Party, which is in an alliance with the Congress
in Maharashtra, to run his campaign; and while Mr Sharad Pawar has
addressed a couple of rallies for him, the NCP chief’s nephew Mr Ajit
Pawar has refused to campaign for Mr Kalmadi.
At a poll rally here Monday, Das - who left the Congress to join the
BSP - described that Nafisa’s husband was a Sikh. Conveyed to
the Muslims among the voters that she was not married into a Muslim
family.

Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), however, participated in fewer
debates (1.9%) in the House compared with its seat share (3.6%).
Smaller, regional parties get an adequate opportunity to
voice their opinions and represent their regions in Parliament? How
much do smaller parties participate in parliamentary proceedings?
Data
complied by PRS Legislative Research, a Delhi-based independent
research initiative, reveals that the participation of various parties
is broadly proportional to their share of seats in the House—implying
thereby that smaller and regional parties are, by and large, allowed to
have their say in the House.
Among the larger parties, it
is interesting to note that the Congress seems to punch below its
weight. While its parliamentarians participated in 18.20% of all
debates in the 14th Lok Sabha, they account for about 25.30% of the
members in the Lok Sabha. In contrast, the Left parties, whose members
of Parliament (MPs) account for 8.4% of House strength, participated in
12.90% of the debates.
Comrade Salim and family own assets worth Rs.92 lakh
Kolkata, April 17, Mohammed Salim, deputy leader of the Communist Party
of India-Marxist (CPI-M) in the outgoing Lok Sabha, and his family have
total assets of over Rs.92 lakh (Rs.9.2 million). 51-year-old Salim has Rs.15,000 in cash and Rs.37,52,241 in bank
deposits, according to an affidvait he filed Friday along with his
nomination papers for the Kolkata North constituency.
He has accounts in three state-run banks, including a term-deposit
of Rs.36,26,558 with Parliament House branch of the State Bank of India
(SBI) in New Delhi.
Salim, who holds a post-graduate degree in philosophy, has assets
worth Rs.595,250 in various mutual funds. He has two life insurance
policies totaling Rs.200,000 and jewelleries of value Rs.5,000.
He does not own any car and there are no criminal cases against him.
His spouse, Rosina Khatun, has Rs.12,000 in cash besides accounts in
five banks, including multinationals American Express and Standard
Chartered.
She has a fixed deposit of Rs.71,480. Her total bank deposits add up to Rs.511,233.
Khatun has Rs.840,236 in bonds and debentures and her deposits in
other financial instruments and Life Insurance Corporation of India
policies amount to Rs.11,96,746. She owns jewellery worth Rs.300,000.
Khatun also has an under-construction flat, measuring 1,219 sq ft,
in the upscale satellite township of Salt Lake, for which she has so
far paid Rs.970,000.
The body of Sonkar, a SC leader, was found hanging from a tree in the state’s Jaunpur town early Monday.
The autopsy report Monday described it as “death by hanging” and
hinted at “suicide”.
Qureshi said polls in all Maoist dominated areas were deliberately
held simultaneously. “Naxalite violence could have taken place in a
much bigger way. But as part of our three-month long strategy we
decided to conducts polls in the Naxal-infested areas on the same day.”
He said the idea was to prevent Maoist movement from one state to
other, he added. In the first phase of polls April 16, 19 people were
killed in Maoist violence.
Qureshi also thanked the media.
“On several occasions, we have taken action only after viewing TV
news clippings and on the basis of media reports. Media serves as our
eyes and ears,” said Qureshi.
Qureshi said in the next phase, 17 parliamentary constituencies
spread across 20 districts in Uttar Pradesh will go to polls and 324
candidates, including 15 women, are in the fray.
Actor Sanjay Dutt ran into trouble again on Saturday when he was booked on obscenity charges. A case has been registered against the film star and SP leader Sanjay Dutt.for making derogatory and undignified remarks against chief minister
Mayawati during an election rally held at KP Hindu College ground on
April 16,” a senior police officer said.
The 49-year-old actor was barred from contesting the elections by the
Supreme Court last month. He has been slapped with a notice for
violating the model code of conduct by making derogatory remarks
against a woman. Dutt is required to submit a reply within three days.
This is the second FIR against the SP general secretary in less than a
week.
Reacting to the move to book actor Sanjay Dutt for his alleged remarks
against UP CM Mayawati, Pinki Jowel, Pratapgarh district magistrate
said, “We have issued a notice to Dutt for violation of the model code
of conduct for his objectionable remarks against the chief minister.
His statement goes against any woman.”
On April 14, a case was filed against him for allegedly making communal
remarks at an election rally in Mau district. Dutt had allegedly told
the meet that in police custody, he was given third degree torture
because his mother was Muslim.
The latest FIR was lodged by an administrative officer Riyazuddin under
section 294 of the IPC (obscenity in public place) and is punishable
with imprisonment of three months or fine or both.
Samajwadi Party leader, his supporters join BSP
Lucknow, April 17 (IANS) Samajwadi Party Rajya Sabha
MP Banwari Lal Kanchal and his supporters Friday joined the Bahujan
Samaj Party (BSP) here in the presence of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister
and party chief Mayawati.
Kanchal, who is the chief of Uttar Pradesh Udyog Vyapar Pratinidhi
Mandal - the traders’ wing of the Samajwadi Party - told reporters that
he decided to join the BSP after finding his own party oppressing
businessmen.
Welcoming Kanchal, Mayawati said her party would do everything in the interest of the business community.
“I assure the business community that our party and our government would continue with its effort for their welfare,” she said.
Mayawati also expressed hope that the new members would reach out to traders and apprise them about the party’s ideology.
India polls: BBC beats Twitter, Indian sites; turnout 58-62%
I tried following the Indian elections on Twitter yesterday,
searching both “India” and “Indian elections” for election news. News
came fast from various sources. But the BBC was the best, providing
live coverage, interactive maps as well as in-depth analysis.
Analysis and perspective have become more valuable than ever because breaking news is so easy to get.
That’s
why I wasn’t tempted to post a video of the slipper hurled at the Hindu
nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party leader Lal Krishna Advani, who wants
to be India’s next prime minister. (Videos here in Hindi and in English.)
Interestingly,
almost half the eligible voters voted in Jammu and Kashmir — and more
than half in Arunachal Pradesh, which is claimed by China – according
to the Hindu. Here’s how Jammu and Kashmir was covered by the Chinese
news agency, Xinhua. Thousands voted in Jammu, said another Xinhua report.
It
was the Maoist rebels who waged a violent campaign to disrupt the
polls, killing 16 people, including eight policemen, yesterday deep in
the Indian countryside, reported The Times of India.
Isn’t that ironic? The worst-hit were the Maoist strongholds in
Chattisgarh, Jharkhand and Bihar. The Maoists want revolution, not
democracy.
65
percent in Andhra Pradesh which includes the IT hub, Hyderabad; 62
percent in Arunachal Pradesh and Assam; 60 percent in Kerala; 50
percent in Uttar Pradesh, India’s biggest state whose chief minister,
Mayawati, wants to be the next prime minister; 48 percent in Jammu and
Kashmir; and 46 percent in Bihar. Parts of Bihar are inside what the
BBC calls the Red Corridor – controlled by the Maoists.
Curiously, the Election Commission of India
is not giving polling percentages in the publicly accessible sections
– maybe because the elections don’t end till May 13. Elections were
held only in 124 of the 543 constituencies yesterday.
Apart from the BBC, the other go-to site is Rediff’s India Votes 2009. The Hindustan Times has the most interactive features among the Indian newspaper sites.
The bad news:
The National Election Watch
reports 222 election candidates — 16 percent of the 1,425 people
standing for election — have criminal records. Congress is fielding
24 and the BJP 23 candidates with criminal records.
Incidentally,
the Communist Party of India (Marxist), which opposes America and
supports China, wants a weaker Indian government. “We favour a truly
federal structure in a country as vast as India,” the Marxist leader Prakash Karat
told the BBC. He wants more power for the states, three of which –
West Bengal, Kerala and Tripura — have Marxist governments.
The
CPI (M) has formed a Third Front with Mayawati and her BSP, the former
Tamil film star Jayalalitha who leads the AIADMK strong in Tamil Nadu,
and the Telugu Desam Party leader Chandra Babu Naidu who claims credit
for the technology boom in Hyderabad. They make up the Third Front
fighting the outgoing prime minister Manmohan Singh’s Congress party as
well as the opposition Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party.
Meanwhile. the Times of India website leads with the news: Heed India, young and affluent wake up to vote.
The young and the rich are voting like never before, it reports from
Hyderabad. Elections in the other big cities – New Delhi, Mumbai,
Kolkata, Chennai and Bangalore – will be held later.
This Google map of India is useful, showing the places in the news as the elections continue.
Below are the affidavits of the candidates contesting for the Pune Loksabha Seat in India’s General Elections
2009. Click on the names to open the scanned PDF documents. You can
check the details of the wealth, holdings, assets of the candidates and
their criminal record, if any. Use these links to have a look at
candidate affidavits across - Pune, Maharashtra and India .
The asset figures unfortunately do not show the true picture, as
politicians across India seem to have found effective ways to hide
wealth and still comply with the election commission norms. Apart from
the black money option, the primary ways to hide wealth seem to be 1)
True market values of assets is not shown 2) Netas keep their wealth in
the form of trusts and similar legal entities over which they have
absolute control but as such do not own on paper.
Total worth of two BSP candidates from Delhi is around Rs 750 crore; amount can fund infrastructure projects
They
may not stand a chance of winning in Delhi but if the two Bahujan Samaj
Party (BSP) candidates from the Capital merged their assets, they could
have qualified to bid for the ailing IT giant Satyam.
The two
BSP nominees Kanwar Singh Tanwar and Deepak Bhardwaj have declared
assets worth Rs 150 crore and Rs 620 crore respectively. The amount
totals to Rs 750 crore, the base bid price for Satyam Computers as
fixed by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI).
A
little mathematics reveals that apart from the Satyam bid, the total
assets of the two candidates can fund many infrastructure projects (see
What the two leaders can fund) like the Delhi-Dwarka flyover or the
27.7-km-long Delhi-Gurgaon highway.
Tanwar, who is the BSP
candidate from South Delhi, was proud of his Rs 155.27-crore gold pot.
“I am not like other candidates who own property worth millions and
mention only in thousands. I have paid income tax to the government for
the assets I own. I do not need to hide the details,” said Tanwar.
The
other BSP leader, Deepak Bhardwaj trying his luck from West Delhi
constituency, declared assets more than Rs 620 crore while filing his
nomination papers. “I can assure my voters a fair leadership as I have
everything and will not steal their money,” said Bhardwaj, who is the
richest candidate in the country.
Tanwar runs a flourishing medicine business and is into real estate. Bhardwaj owns agricultural land and has many hotels to his family’s name.
What the two leaders can fund Delhi-Dwarka flyover project Rs 100 cr Andrews Ganj-Khel Gaon Marg flyover project Rs 45 cr The Delhi-Badarpur signal-free flyover project Rs 340 cr Naraina flyover project Rs 120 cr The 27.7-km-long Delhi-Gurgaon highway project, including nine flyovers, Rs 550 cr
Cyber campaigning seen coming of age in Indian elections
The use of internet for campaigning, being tested in India in the
ongoing general elections, will emerge as a powerful medium when the
world’s largest democracy is ready for the next polls in 2009,
concludes a leading tech publication.
The use of internet for campaigning, being tested in India in the
ongoing general elections, will emerge as a powerful medium when the
world’s largest democracy is ready for the next polls in 2009,
concludes a leading tech publication.
‘Cyber campaigning may come
of age in 2009 elections if politicians see marginal gains by using
Internet and mobile technologies,’ says Ibrahim Ahmad, group editor of
Dataquest, which has done a report in its e-governance magazine.
‘Their faith in e-governance could go up significantly.’
The
magazine says parties are now moving to the next stage - from static
websites to interactive net strategies by building online communities
and social networking sites to actively use technology to reach out to
the electorate.
In a way, all major political parties are
trying to reach out to mass and class and the use of the online medium
has become an inseparable part of election campaign this year. The
biggest motivator is the cost factor, the magazine says.
‘A
spend of Rs.300,000-400,000 can get you around four million impressions
- far cheaper compared to other media,’ says Mrutunjoy Mishra,
co-founder of Internet research firm, Juxtconsult.com.
‘So, it makes good sense as well.’
Dataquest
says parties can draw other advantages by using the Internet, such as
reaching out to voters even when balloting in on. The reason: the
election code is unclear on how to stop promotions on the net 24 hours
before polling.
Party supporters also chip-in with
updates on different websites like You Tube and Orkut.
Finding
that nearly 60 percent of the 40-50 million Internet users live in top
eight cities and could impact some 50 Lok Sabha seats.
Prime ministerial wannabe Mayawati is expected to launch
her own blog. But large number of intellectual SC/STs all over the world use groups such as Yahoo etc. and have created websites such as http://sarvajan.ambedkar.org etc. to propagate for BSP. In fact they out number other party supporters. They simultaneously link with their traditional caders who personaly meet the voters and lead them to the polling booths to ensure victory for their party chief to become the Prime Minister.
Samajwadi Party, whose chief Mulayam Singh Yadav has
come out strongly against the use of computers, appears oblivious to
the power of the net, so it seems is the case with other regional
parties, save exceptions like Telugu Desam Party (TDP).
If 2009
general elections was the ‘beta launch’ for parties using the Internet
to reach out to the electorate, the next round is expected to see this
medium ‘go live’ to emerge as an effective tool for campaigning - as
Barack Obama experienced during the 2008 US presidential election.
Rahul Gandhi, YSR pray at Tirupati temple
Hyderabad, April 17, Congress party general secretary Rahul Gandhi and
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy prayed separately
at the famous Lord Venkateshwara temple in Tirupati.
Gandhi, one of the key campaigners for the Congress party, made an
unscheduled visit to the temple located on Tirumala Hills around
midnight.
The young MP from Amethi reached the temple town Thursday night
after addressing a series of election meetings in coastal Andhra and
Rayalaseema regions.
Officials of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD), which manages the
affairs of India’s richest temple, said Gandhi spent 20 minutes during
his first visit to the shrine.
The Congress leader had a night halt in the temple town and left for campaigning Friday morning.
YSR, as the chief minister is popularly known, also prayed at the
temple after seeing off Gandhi. He later resumed campaigning in
Rayalaseema.
Tirupati was a Buddhist center. Rulers of Prabuddha Bharath used to visit every year for meditation after tonsuring their heads which is the original practice of Buddhists. Now people tonsure their heads and apply the symbol on their fore heads. By now Congress party general secretary Rahul Gandhi and
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy whould have come to know the result after seeing them with the symbol.
REUTERS - India goes to the polls in a general election from April 16 to May 13.
Here are details of five most important swing states which account for a total of 243 out of 543 parliamentary seats.
* UTTAR PRADESH (80 seats)
India’s most populous state could be a key election with an
outside chance the chief minister Mayawati could become
the country’s next prime minister.
Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), which champions the cause of SC/STs or “untouchables”and now the entire people, cannot be challenged by Congress and
the Samajwadi Party (SP), who cannot defeat Mayawati even after they pool their
vote share, since Mayawati enjoys the pro-incumbancy factor after sharing the wealth of the state amongst all sections of the society.
There is every chance that the current Congress-SP alliance, seen by analysts as a marriage of convenience, may crumble.
Mayawati will build on her success at the state level and also from all over the country because of the anti-incumbancy factor for the Congress and violent hatred campaign of BJP, she
will become the Prime Minister.
Congress has in the past deployed two of its star campaigners,
party chief Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul, in the state but failed to
make significant inroads.
BSP keen on increasing vote share in Stateto win at least 14 seats in Karnataka
Party
has decided to contest all 28 Lok Sabha seats
BSP’s vote share has been increasing since 2004
It wants to reduce the influence of other parties
BANGALORE: Even though the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) has decided to
field its candidates in all the 28 Lok Sabha constituencies in
Karnataka, in order to make Mayawati as the Prime Minister is more interested in
increasing its vote share in the State than and winning at least 14 seats.
We will have real chance in most of the constituencies in
Karnataka, including Bidar, Chamarajanagar, Chitradurga, Bangalore South, Bangalore North, Bangalore Central, etc and we
hope to substantially increase our vote share in Karnataka and lay the
foundation for the party’s growth in the State,” general secretary of
the BSP’s Karnataka unit Gopinath told..
Gradual increase
The BSP’s vote share in the State has been gradually increasing
since 2004.
“We want to more vote share this time around. We hope to touch eight to 50 per cent,” Mr. Gopinath said.
By laying emphasis on increasing its vote share, the BSP is seeking
to reduce the influence of other parties, particularly national parties
such as the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Congress, which it has
dubbed “Manuvadi” parties.
However, BSP leader Mahesh said the party’s presence in the poll
arena had already started upsetting the traditional voting pattern. In
the 2008 Assembly elections, the BSP not only came second in many seats
but also ensured the defeat of Congress in 14 seats. “The number of
votes polled by the Congress and the BSP in 14 seats was more than that
of the eventual winners,” Mr. Mahesh claimed.
Now the image of the party has gone up multifold because of Ms Mayawati. Almost all sections of the society is hopeful of her becoming the Prime Minister.

JD(U) to support BSP candidate
Special Correspondent
Bangalore: The State unit of the Janata Dal (United) has decided to
support Bahujan Samaj Party candidate Vijayaraj Singh contesting from
Bangalore Central, which goes to the polls on April 23.
JD(U) general secretary Lokpal Jain told presspersons here on
Saturday that the party had decided to support Mr. Singh in line with
its policy to support candidates who comply with the ideology of the
party.
Mr. Singh had requested the party to support him as it had not
fielded any candidate and the political objectives of the JD(U) and the
BSP were similar. The party had agreed to support Mr. Singh considering
his political, social and educational background.
The party had deliberated a lot about extending support to Mr.
Singh. However, in the light of alleged electoral offences and
violations of the code of conduct by the Congress, the Bharatiya Janata
Party and the Janata Dal (Secular), the party decided to support Mr.
Singh, Mr. Jain said.
