Ajaniya Sutta: The
Thoroughbred
translated from the Pali

“Endowed with three
characteristics, a king’s excellent thoroughbred steed is worthy of a king,
the wealth of a king, and counts as one of the king’s own limbs. Which three?
There is the case where a king’s excellent thoroughbred steed is consummate in
beauty, consummate in strength, and consummate in speed. Endowed with these
three characteristics is a king’s excellent thoroughbred steed worthy of a
king, the wealth of a king, and counts as one of the king’s own limbs.
“In the same way, a
monk endowed with these three qualities is worthy of gifts, worthy of
hospitality, worthy of offerings, worthy of respect, an unexcelled field of
merit for the world. Which three? There is the case where a monk is consummate
in beauty, consummate in strength, and consummate in speed.
“And how is a monk consummate in beauty? There is the case
where a monk is virtuous. He dwells restrained in accordance with the
Patimokkha, consummate in his behavior & sphere of activity. He trains
himself, having undertaken the training rules, seeing danger in the slightest
fault. This is how a monk is consummate in beauty.
“And how is a monk consummate in strength? There is the
case where a monk keeps his persistence aroused for abandoning unskillful
mental qualities and taking on skillful mental qualities. He is steadfast,
solid in his effort, not shirking his duties with regard to skillful mental
qualities. This is how a monk is consummate in strength.
“And how is a monk consummate in speed? There is the case
where a monk discerns as it actually is present that ‘This is stress.’ He
discerns as it actually is present that ‘This is the origination of stress.’ He
discerns as it actually is present that ‘This is the cessation of stress.’ He
discerns as it actually is present that ‘This is the path of practice leading
to the cessation of stress.’ This is how a monk is consummate in speed.
“Endowed with these three qualities is a monk worthy of
gifts, worthy of hospitality, worthy of offerings, worthy of respect, an
unexcelled field of merit for the world.”
WikiLeaks
report about Mayawati baseless: Senior BSP leader
Mayawati said that the Wikileaks founder was spreading a canard
against her, her party and people loyal to her and the ruling BSP. “There
is not an iota of truth in the cable leaks and this is all a blatant lie to
tarnish the image of my government,”
She said the Wikileaks
was playing in the hands of the opposition parties keen to de-stabilise her.
The owner of the Wikileaks, she said, seemed to
have gone mad and deserved to be sent to a mental asylum. She said that Assange
should be sent to a mental asylum by the country he belongs to and
in case if there was no place for him, he should be sent to UP. “We will
put him in the Agra mental asylum,” she said.
Defending her close
aides– cabinet secretary, Shashank Shekhar Singh and party’s general secretary
and Rajya Sabha member, Satish Chandra Mishra, she said that the wikileaks
newsreports about them were totally baseless. Notwithstanding the attempts
being made by the Wikileaks to defame them, she asserted that she would ensure
that both of them govern the state and the party functioning even more
prominently. She lauded them for their contribution to the party and the
government and said that falsehood spread by WikiLeaks could not undermine
their role in any manner.
She said this was being
spread only to harm her party’s prospects in the coming elections. She blamed
the media for carrying such reports without cross checking their authenticity.
“In fact, this only shows the mindset of media, which is anti-Untouchable (Scheduled
Caste),” she said.
Slamming the Wikileaks
for making personal attacks against her, Maywati said that she had no knowledge
whether an empty jet was sent to pick up a pair of sandals of her choice from
Mumbai or whether she had nine cooks including two food tasters.
She said it seemed as
if the Wikileaks owner had gone in the Jet to get her the much talked about
sandals. She said it was very irresponsible on part of the TV channels for
gleefully putting out these personal details and also criticised the
politicians, who had quickly reacted to the Wikileaks canard for cheap
popularity.
Rubbishing these
rumours, she said the politicians who had said that she had nine cooks, must be
lounging in her household somewhere and washing dishes. “This was why they
claimed to have such detailed knowledge of my kitchen and household,” she
said.
The BSP has reacted sharply to BJP’s attack based on WikiLeaks,
saying the latter should look within.
The Bahujan Samaj Party spokesperson issued an official
statement saying BJP’s allegations are baseless and politically motivated.
According to the statement, “BJP and other political
parties can’t stand a Scheduled Caste (Untouchable) CM’s leadership. Naqvi
should rather look at the corrupt state governments run by the BJP. The way
Naqwi has reacted to WikiLeaks clearly shows his anti-SC/ST and casteist
mindset.”
The BSP spokesperson also pointed fingers at the BJP governments
in Karnataka, Uttarakhand and Madhya Pradesh for rampant corruption.
Terming WikiLeaks report about Mayawati as “baseless and
wrong”, senior BSP leader Satish Chandra Mishra today said they were a conspiracy
against the party ahead of the Uttar Pradesh assembly polls.
“There can’t be a greater wrong than this. This is an
absolute lie and is totally baseless and whosoever has published this, should
have verified and then gone ahead with this news,” he told reporters
outside Parliament.
Mishra termed the WikiLeaks cable as “lies” and said,
“On May 13, Government was formed and then I took oath after a week. And
within a week, such a thing will be said and that too at my level, there can’t
be a bigger lie than this.”
The BSP leader said, “Newspapers should have thought before
publishing this and that is why we have decided that we will take legal action
against the newspapers and TV channels who have shown it and the people behind
this will soon be exposed.”
“Clarifications are given where there is any mistrust. Our
leader has been alerting us against this saying that such things would happen
and we should be careful. We have been asked to stay away from the media.”
Mishra said Mayawati has been “warning that all such things
will be planted and today she stands proved. Her warning was correct.”
The BSP leader said, “Now UP elections are coming, so
definitely there is a conspiracy. Many other such things will happen.”
