The discourses of Buddha are divided into 84,000, as to separate addresses. The division includes all that was spoken by Buddha.βI received from Buddha,β said Ananda, β82,000 Khandas, and from the priests 2000; these are 84,000 Khandas maintained by me.β They are divided into 275,250, as to the stanzas of the original text, and into 361,550, as to the stanzas of the commentary. All the discourses including both those of Buddha and those of the commentator, are divided into 2,547 banawaras, containing 737,000 stanzas, and 29,368,000 separate letters.

1.”There is the case where a disciple of the noble ones has gone to the Buddha for refuge. This is the first reward of merit, reward of skillfulness, nourishment of happiness, celestial, resulting in happiness, leading to heaven, leading to what is desirable, pleasurable, & appealing; to welfare & to happiness.
2.”Furthermore, the disciple of the noble ones has gone to the Dhamma for refuge. This is the second reward of merit…

1.”There is the case where the disciple of the noble ones is endowed with verified confidence in the Awakened One: ‘Indeed, the Blessed One is worthy and rightly self-awakened, consummate in knowledge & conduct, well-gone, an expert with regard to the world, unexcelled as a trainer for those people fit to be tamed, the Teacher of divine & human beings, awakened, blessed.’ This is the first bonanza of merit, bonanza of skillfulness, nourishment of bliss.
2.”Furthermore, the disciple of the noble ones is endowed with verified confidence in the Dhamma: ‘The Dhamma is well-expounded by the Blessed One, to be seen here & now, timeless, inviting verification, pertinent, to be realized by the wise for themselves.’ This is the second bonanza of merit, bonanza of skillfulness, nourishment of bliss.
3.”Furthermore, the disciple of the noble ones is endowed with verified confidence in the Sangha: ‘The Sangha of the Blessed One’s disciples who have practiced well…who have practiced straight-forwardly…who have practiced methodically…who have practiced masterfully β in other words, the four types of noble disciples when taken as pairs, the eight when taken as individual types β they are the Sangha of the Blessed One’s disciples: worthy of gifts, worthy of hospitality, worthy of offerings, worthy of respect, the incomparable field of merit for the world.’ This is the third bonanza of merit, bonanza of skillfulness, nourishment of bliss.
4.”Furthermore, the disciple of the noble ones lives at home with an awareness cleansed of the stain of stinginess, freely generous, openhanded, delighting in being magnanimous, responsive to requests, delighting in the distribution of alms. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati asserted Monday that providing good governance was her goal right from
day one.
According to her, ‘right from the time I assumed the chief minister’s
office for the fourth time in 2007, my main attention was focused on
law and order and development’.
Mayawati unveiled a long list of welfare and social security schemes
announced by her during the past three and a half years.
Alleging that the Centre has been meting out step-motherly treatment to the state, she said the state’s legislators should tell people that the state government has initiated a number of schemes for the welfare of SC/STs, women, minorities and other section of society.
“Despite our requests to the Centre to give special package for the development of eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bundelkhand, no heed has been paid to it. The demand to constitute three smaller states of Purvanchal, Bundelkhand and Paschimanchal was also not met,” Mayawati alleged.
She asked the legislators to expand the party’s base and to ensure that welfare schemes launched by the government reach the common man so that they get to know the reality of development works.

Convening a meeting of her Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) legislators at her official residence here Wednesday, Mayawati said: ‘Just about 18 months from now, UP will go to poll. Therefore it is now time that all of you get down to brass tacks and start fanning out in your respective constituencies to apprise the electorate of all the good work that this government has done over the past three and a half years.’
Urging the legislators to go door to door, she said: ‘It is important for people to be told how concerned we are about their wellbeing for which we have not only introduced a number of welfare schemes, but also carried out a large number of development and anti-poverty schemes for the larger good of the state.’
Lamenting over the alleged non-cooperation by the centre, she added, ‘What the electorate needs to also know is that whatever we have achieved was without the cooperation of the central government, which has been repeatedly denying us our due.’
She said: ‘After all, UP is the most populous state in the country, therefore its financial requirements have to be higher than all other states. But the central government has never cared to understand this and has arbitrarily turned down our demand for higher financial assistance or special economic packages for the backward regions.’
The chief minister also stressed upon the need to apprise the common masses of her government’s ’successful tirade against crime’.

History of the Middle East as far back as the records of ancient civilizations extend and seems to have been well developed before sea commerce began. It is evident that all trade from one fertile area to another in this region had to be organized from the first, since long distances of desert trail separated settled parts and since local governments could not guarantee protection against tribes eager for loot and pillage. Such wares as jewels, spices, perfumes, dyes, metals, rare woods, ivory, oils, and textiles (chiefly silk) are associated with the trade. Camels were the main carriers from Egypt to Mesopotamia and throughout the Arabian peninsula. They were introduced into N Africa and the Sahara region in the 3d cent. AD Donkeys were used in Asia Minor. Trade naturally prospered in the period of the great empires, when the caravan routes could be controlled and protected; and it was to secure control of such routes that many wars were fought and conquests made in ancient times. An empire provided for the establishment of inns, or caravansaries, for the accommodation of travelers along the way. Such improvements facilitated the movement of troops to protect the routes. Cities rose and fell in ancient times in proportion to the rise and fall in the trade of the caravan routes upon which they were located. Basically the caravan system underwent little change until challenged in modern times by the motor truck and the airplane. Travelers having occasion to cross desert spaces usually joined merchant caravans. After the advent of Islam, the pilgrimage of the devout to Mecca gave rise to long pilgrim caravans that were a feature of the pilgrimage season each year. The closest approach to caravan trade in the New World was the wagon train commerce that developed over the Sante Fe Trail.

The Dark Castle. Includes a good sequence illustrating facets of travel via camel caravan along the Silk Road. Focus is on the ruins of the fortress-city of Karakhoto (one of the centers of the Xixia or Tangut state that flourished in the region just prior to the Mongol invasion of the thirteenth century), where the modern archaeological/film crew finds various artifacts including pieces of silk and written texts. This film would be quite appealing for younger students because it includes some dramatization of the semi-legendary events surrounding the conquest and destruction of Karakhoto by the armies of Chingis Khan.
