Dhanañjani Sutta: To Dhanañjani

I have
heard that on one occasion the Blessed One was staying near Rajagaha in the Bamboo Grove, the Squirrels’ Sanctuary. Now, on
that occasion Ven. Sariputta was wandering
in the Southern Mountains with a large community of monks. Then a certain monk
who had spent the Rains in Rajagaha went to the Southern Mountains, to Ven.
Sariputta. On arrival, he exchanged courteous greetings with Ven. Sariputta and
— after an exchange of friendly greetings & courtesies — sat to one side.
As he was sitting there, Ven. Sariputta said to him, “I trust, friend,
that the Blessed One is strong & free from illness?”

“The
Blessed One, friend, is strong & free from illness.”

“I
trust that the community of monks is strong & free from illness?”

“The
community of monks is also strong & free from illness.”

“At
the Tandulapala Gate is a brahman named Dhanañjani.[1]
I trust that he is strong & free from illness?”

“Dhanañjani
the brahman is also strong & free from illness.”

“And
I trust that Dhanañjani the brahman is heedful?”

“From
where would our Dhanañjani the brahman get any heedfulness, friend? Relying on
the king, he plunders brahmans & householders. Relying on the brahmans
& householders, he plunders the king. His wife — a woman of faith, fetched
from a family with faith — has died. He has fetched another wife — a woman of
no faith — from a family with no faith.”

“What
a bad thing to hear, my friend — when we hear that Dhanañjani the brahman is
heedless. Perhaps sooner or later we might meet with Dhanañjani the brahman. Perhaps
there might be some conversation.”

Then Ven.
Sariputta, having stayed in the Southern Mountains as long as he liked,
wandered in the direction of Rajagaha. After wandering by stages, he arrived at
Rajagaha. There he stayed near Rajagaha in the Squirrels’ Sanctuary.

Then
early in the morning, Ven. Sariputta put on his robes and, carrying his bowl
& outer robe, went into Rajagaha for alms. And on that occasion Dhanañjani
the brahman was milking cows in a cow pen outside the city. Then Ven.
Sariputta, having gone for alms in Rajagaha, after his meal, on his way back
from his almsround, went to Dhanañjani the brahman. Dhanañjani the brahman saw
Ven. Sariputta coming from afar. On seeing him, he went to him and said,
“Drink some of this fresh milk, master Sariputta. It must be time for your
meal.”

“That’s
all right, brahman. I have finished my meal for today. My day’s abiding will be
under that tree over there. You may come there.”

“As
you say, master,” Dhanañjani responded to Ven. Sariputta. Then after he had
finished his morning meal, he went to Ven. Sariputta. On arrival, he exchanged
courteous greetings with Ven. Sariputta and — after an exchange of friendly
greetings & courtesies — sat to one side. As he was sitting there, Ven.
Sariputta said to him, “I trust, Dhanañjani, that you are heedful?”

“From
where would we get any heedfulness, master? — when parents are to be supported,
wife & children are to be supported, slaves & workers are to be
supported, friend-&-companion duties are to be done for friends &
companions, kinsmen-&-relative duties for kinsmen & relatives, guest
duties for guests, departed-ancestor duties for departed ancestors, devata
duties for devatas, king duties for the king, and this body also has to be
refreshed & nourished.”

“What
do you think Dhanañjani? There is the case where a certain person, for the sake
of his mother & father, does what is unrighteous, does what is discordant.
Then, because of his unrighteous, discordant behavior, hell-wardens drag him
off to hell. Would he gain anything by saying, ‘I did what is unrighteous, what
is discordant, for the sake of my mother & father. Don’t [throw] me into
hell, hell-wardens!’ Or would his mother & father gain anything for him by
saying, ‘He did what is unrighteous, what is discordant, for our sake. Don’t
[throw] him into hell, hell-wardens!’?”

“No,
master Sariputta. Even right while he was wailing, they’d cast him into
hell.”

“What
do you think Dhanañjani? There is the case where a certain person, for the sake
of his wife & children … his slaves & workers … his friends &
companions … his kinsmen & relatives … his guests … his departed
ancestors … the devatas … the king, does what is unrighteous, does what is
discordant. Then, because of his unrighteous, discordant behavior, hell-wardens
drag him off to hell. Would he gain anything by saying, ‘I did what is
unrighteous, what is discordant, for the sake of the king. Don’t [throw] me
into hell, hell-wardens!’ Or would the king gain anything for him by saying,
‘He did what is unrighteous, what is discordant, for our sake. Don’t [throw]
him into hell, hell-wardens!’?”

“No,
master Sariputta. Even right while he was wailing, they’d cast him into
hell.”

“What
do you think Dhanañjani? There is the case where a certain person, for the sake
of refreshing & nourishing his body, does what is unrighteous, does what is
discordant. Then, because of his unrighteous, discordant behavior, hell-wardens
drag him off to hell. Would he gain anything by saying, ‘I did what is
unrighteous, what is discordant, for the sake of refreshing & nourishing my
body. Don’t [throw] me into hell, hell-wardens!’ Or would others gain anything
for him by saying, ‘He did what is unrighteous, what is discordant, for the
sake of refreshing & nourishing his body. Don’t [throw] him into hell,
hell-wardens!’?”

“No,
master Sariputta. Even right while he was wailing, they’d cast him into
hell.”

“Now,
what do you think, Dhanañjani? Which is the better: one who, for the sake of
his mother & father, would do what is unrighteous, what is discordant; or
one who, for the sake of his mother & father, would do what is righteous,
what is concordant?

“Master
Sariputta, the one who, for the sake of his mother & father, would do what
is unrighteous, what is discordant, is not the better one. The one who, for the
sake of his mother & father, would do what is righteous, what is concordant
would be the better one there. Righteous behavior, concordant behavior, is
better than unrighteous behavior, discordant behavior.[2]

“Dhanañjani,
there are other activities — reasonable, righteous — by which one can support
one’s mother & father, and at the same time both not do evil and practice
the practice of merit.

“What
do you think, Dhanañjani: Which is the better: one who, for the sake of his
wife & children … his slaves & workers … his friends &
companions … his kinsmen & relatives … his guests … his departed
ancestors … the devatas … the king … refreshing & nourishing his
body, would do what is unrighteous, what is discordant; or one who, for the
sake of refreshing & nourishing his body, would do what is righteous, what
is concordant?

“Master
Sariputta, the one who, for the sake of refreshing & nourishing his body,
would do what is unrighteous, what is discordant, is not the better one. The
one who, for the sake of refreshing & nourishing his body, would do what is
righteous, what is concordant would be the better one there. Righteous
behavior, concordant behavior, is better than unrighteous behavior, discordant
behavior.[3]

 ”Dhanañjani,
there are other activities — reasonable, righteous — by which one can refresh
& nourish one’s body, and at the same time both not do evil and practice
the practice of merit.”

Then
Dhanañjani the brahman, delighting & rejoicing in Ven. Sariputta’s words,
got up from his seat and left.

Then on a
later occasion, Dhanañjani the brahman became diseased, in pain, severely ill.
So he said to one of his men, “Come, my good man. Go to the Blessed One
and, on arrival, pay homage to his feet with your head in my name and say
‘Lord, Dhanañjani the brahman is diseased, in pain, severely ill. He pays
homage with his head to the Blessed One’s feet.’ Then go to Ven. Sariputta and,
on arrival, pay homage to his feet with your head in my name and say ‘Venerable
sir, Dhanañjani the brahman is diseased, in pain, severely ill. He pays homage
with his head to Ven. Sariputta’s feet.’ Then say, ‘It would be good if Ven.
Sariputta would visit Dhanañjani’s home, out of sympathy for him.’”

Responding,
“As you say, lord,” to Dhanañjani the brahman, the man went to the
Blessed One and, on arrival, bowed down to him and sat to one side. As he was
sitting there he said, “Lord, Dhanañjani the brahman is diseased, in pain,
severely ill. He pays homage with his head to the Blessed One’s feet.”
Then he went to Ven. Sariputta and, on arrival, bowed down to him and sat to
one side. As he was sitting there he said, ‘Venerable sir, Dhanañjani the
brahman is diseased, in pain, severely ill. He pays homage with his head to
Ven. Sariputta’s feet.” Then he said, “It would be good if Ven.
Sariputta would visit Dhanañjani’s home, out of sympathy for him.” Ven.
Sariputta acquiesced through silence.

Then Ven.
Sariputta, having put on his robes and, taking his bowl & outer robe, went
to Dhanañjani’s home. On arrival, he sat down on a prepared seat and said to
him, “I trust you are getting better, Dhanañjani? I trust you are
comfortable? I trust that your pains are lessening and not increasing? I trust
that there are signs of their lessening, and not of their increasing?”

“I
am not getting better, Master Sariputta. I am not comfortable. My severe pains
are increasing, not lessening. There are signs of their increasing, and not of
their lessening. Extreme forces slice through my head, just as if a strong man
were slicing my head open with a sharp sword …. Extreme pains have arisen in
my head, just as if a strong man were tightening a turban on my head with a
tough leather strap …. Extreme forces carve up my stomach cavity, just as if
an expert butcher or his apprentice were to carve up the stomach cavity of an
ox with a sharp butcher’s knife …. There is an extreme burning in my body,
just as if two strong men, seizing a weaker man with their arms, were to roast
and broil him over a pit of hot embers. I am not getting better, venerable sir.
I am not comfortable. My severe pains are increasing, not lessening. There are
signs of their increasing, and not of their lessening.”

“What
do you think, Dhanañjani? Which is better: hell or the animal womb?”

“The
animal womb is better than hell, Master Sariputta.”

“…
Which is better: the animal womb or the realm of the hungry shades?”

“…
the realm of the hungry shades ….”

“…
the realm of the hungry shades or human beings?”

“…
human beings ….”

“…human
beings or the Four Great King devas?”

“…the
Four Great King devas ….”

“…the
Four Great King devas or the devas of the Thirty-three?”

“…the
devas of the Thirty-three ….”

“…the
devas of the Thirty-three or the Yama devas?”

“…the
Yama devas ….”

“…the
Yama devas or the Tusita devas?”

“…the
Tusita devas ….”

“…the
Tusita devas or the Nimmanarati devas?”

“…the
Nimmanarati devas ….”

“…the
Nimmanarati devas or the Paranimmitavasavatti devas?”

“…the
Paranimmitavasavatti devas ….”

“…the
Paranimmitavasavatti devas or the Brahma world?”

“Did
Master Sariputta say, ‘Brahma world’? Did Master Sariputta say, ‘Brahma
world’?”

Then the
thought occurred to Ven. Sariputta, “These brahmans are set on the Brahma
world. What if I were to teach Dhanañjani the brahman the path to union with
the Brahmas?”

[So he
said:] “Dhanañjani, I will teach you the path to union with the Brahmas.
Listen and pay careful attention to that. I will speak.”

“As
you say, master,” Dhanañjani the brahman responded to Ven. Sariputta.

Ven.
Sariputta said: “And what is the path to union with the Brahmas? There is
the case where a monk keeps pervading the first direction [the east] with an
awareness imbued with good will, likewise the second, likewise the third,
likewise the fourth. Thus above, below, & all around, everywhere, in its
entirety, he keeps pervading the all-encompassing cosmos with an awareness
imbued with good will — abundant, expansive, immeasurable, without hostility,
without ill will. He keeps pervading the first direction with an awareness imbued
with compassion … appreciation … equanimity, likewise the second, likewise
the third, likewise the fourth. Thus above, below, & all around,
everywhere, in its entirety, he keeps pervading the all-encompassing cosmos
with an awareness imbued with equanimity — abundant, expansive, immeasurable,
without hostility, without ill will. This, Dhanañjani, is the path to union
with the Brahmas.”

“In
that case, Master Sariputta, pay homage to the Blessed One’s feet with your
head in my name and say ‘Lord, Dhanañjani the brahman is diseased, in pain,
severely ill. He pays homage with his head to the Blessed One’s feet.’”

So Ven.
Sariputta — when there was still more to be done, having established Dhanañjani
the brahman in the inferior[4]
Brahma world — got up from his seat and left. Then, not long after Ven.
Sariputta’s departure, Dhanañjani the brahman died and reappeared in the Brahma
world.

And the
Blessed One said to the monks, “Monks, Sariputta — when there was still
more to be done, having established Dhanañjani the brahman in the inferior
Brahma world — has gotten up from his seat and left.”

Then Ven.
Sariputta went to the Blessed One and, on arrival, having bowed down to him,
sat to one side. As he was sitting there he said to the Blessed One,
“Lord, Dhanañjani the brahman is diseased, in pain, severely ill. He pays
homage with his head to the Blessed One’s feet.”

“But
why, Sariputta — when there was still more to be done, having established
Dhanañjani the brahman in the inferior Brahma world — did you get up from your
seat and leave?”

“The
thought occurred to me, lord, ‘These brahmans are set on the Brahma worlds.
What if I were to teach Dhanañjani the brahman the path to union with the
Brahmas?’”

“Sariputta,
Dhanañjani the brahman has died and reappeared in the Brahma world.”

Notes

1.

The PTS edition of the canon
gives this name as Dhaanañjaani, whereas the Thai and Sri Lankan editions give
it as Dhanañjaani. This discourse is unusual in that Ven. Sariputta addresses
Dhanañjani not as “householder,” but by his personal name. This would
seem to indicate that the two of them were on especially familiar terms.

2, 3.

This sentence appears in the Thai
and Sri Lankan editions of the canon, and in MLS, but not in MLDB.

4.

I.e., inferior to any of the
noble attainments. The Brahma world can be attained simply through the power of
concentration applied to unlimited good will, etc., or to any of the jhanas.
Only if discernment is developed to overcome passion and delight for these
mundane attainments can the noble attainments be realized. For discussions of
this issue see MN 106, AN

communal

harmony of the
State.

Lucknow: 14 July 2011

The Vaishali (Ghaziabad)-Anand Vihar(Delhi) Metro
line

project, constructed on the special interest of
the Hon’ble

Chief Minister Ms. Mayawati ji, was dedicated to
the people

today. The project is very important for the
people living in

Ghaziabad and adjoining areas. Owing to her
pre-scheduled

programmes, Ms. Mayawati ji could not come to
attend the

programme. She sent Mr. Swami Prasad Maurya, State

Panchayati Raj Minister to represent her and
congratulate the

residents of Ghaziabad. The project, costing Rs.
280 crore, is

fully financed by Ghaziabad Development Authority.

Mr. Swami Prasad Maurya, on the occasion, said
that it

was the top priority of the Hon’ble Chief Minister
ji to

implement projects in the interests of deprived
sections of the

society by adopting the policy of ‘Sarvajan Hitai,
Sarvajan

Sukhai’. It is a result of Hon’ble Chief Minister
ji’s efficient

leadership and her foresight that this project has
been

translated into reality with the joint efforts of
GDA and DMRC.

It is a historic step for the development of this
area. He said

that he was feeling elated as the Hon’ble Chief
Minister ji had

chosen him to represent her at such an important

programme.

The project is another milestone of all round

development taking place within the State under
the

leadership of Hon’ble Chief Minister ji. This
project would

benefit daily commuters, women, students,
office-going

people, labourers, traders etc. Besides, the
tourists would

also be benefited by it. Now, after Noida, another
important

city of Uttar Pradesh viz. Ghaziabad would also be
connected

with Delhi through the Metro Network.

About 60000 passengers would travel from proposed

Vaishali and Kaushambi Metro stations everyday.
This project

would benefit a large area of Ghaziabad including
Vaishali and

Kaushambi and it would boost the social and
economic

development of this area. The UP Government had
also

prepared an extension plan of Metro Rail in Noida
and it had

been finalised. When completed, it would provide
Metro Rail

service to the entire area.

Similarly, U.P. Government has given its consent
for the

implementation of RRTS project for high speed
train from

Delhi to Meerut and this traffic facility under
RRTS project will

be available between Delhi and Meerut in future.
With the

construction of RRTS high speed rail facility will
be available

in Ghaziabad, Modinagar, Meerut and nearby rural
areas

owing to which multi-dimensional development of
the area

would take place.

Various development works have been done with the

efforts of Ghaziabad Development Authority and
other

departments of the State Government in Ghaziabad
city

during last four years, which include—broadening
of roads,

improvement of cross-roads, Ganga Water Supply
under

drinking water system, STP and construction of
bridges at

several places. Ghaziabad has done a great job in
the

direction of making the city green and about five
lakh saplings

have been planted during last four years. Several
new parks

have been developed. Besides it, efforts are being
made for

new roads, development of ring-road and
construction of new

bridge over Hinden river, which will remove the
traffic

problem of Ghaziabad.

Uttar Pradesh Government is also committed to
remove

the residential problem of the people. Under
hi-tech and

integrated township scheme, two hi-tech city and
seven

integrated city schemes are being developed on
10,000 acre

of land in Ghaziabad in which nearly 12 lakh
people would be

resided. In these schemes, 40,000 EWS and LIG
buildings,

1.5 lakh buildings of other category, schools,
colleges, three

fire-stations, nursing homes, hospitals and sports
grounds

facilities would be available.

Metro project work is in progress to connect
Dilshad

Garden (Delhi) to Mohan Nagar (Ghaziabad) under
the second

phase of the project. After coming of metro in
Ghaziabad, it is

also necessary to run feeder buses to connect
metro from

different areas, so that more and more people
could be

benefited by metro facility. This work will be
done on priority

basis.

On the historic occasion of dedicating this
ambitious

project of Hon’ble Chief Minister Ms. Mayawati ji,
Panchayati

Raj Minister again congratulated to the people of
Ghaziabad

and nearby areas on behalf of Hon’ble Chief Minister
ji and

himself.

It may be recalled that construction of corridor
has been

done jointly by Ghaziabad Development Authority
and DMRC

from Anand Vihar (New Delhi) to Vaishali
(Ghaziabad). An

expenditure of about Rs. 280 crore has been made
on the

construction of 2.75 km. corridor. Stations have
been also

constructed at
two places—Kaushabi and Vaishali
.

Hon’ble Chief Minister ji rebukes senior police
and administrative officers regarding Dr. Sachan’s death case

Hon’ble C.M. ji directs to senior officers to
immediately recommend this case for CBI inquiry

Case sent to CBI today

Lucknow:13 July 2011

The Hon’ble Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Ms.
Mayawati ji

reviewed the investigation regarding the incident
of Dr. Y.S.

Sachan’s death at a high-level meeting of senior
police and

administrative officers held here today at her
official residence. In

the meeting, the Hon’ble Chief Minister ji wanted
to know that

when the family members of Dr. Sachan demanded
C.B.I. inquiry

into this incident, then what were the hurdles
before the

administrative and police officers in handing over
this case to

C.B.I. for inquiry.

The Hon’ble Chief Minister ji while rebuking
senior police and

administrative officers strictly directed them to
recommend the

case of Dr. Y.S. Sachan’s death in custody under
mysterious

circumstances. She said that efforts were being
made to malign

the image of the State Government at various
levels, despite the

investigation by the State Government with full
transparency into

the case of Dr. Sachan’s death. She said that her
Government had

never showed any leniency towards the criminals
who took law

into their hands, however powerful they may be or
high posts held

by them.

The Hon’ble Chief Minister ji said that it was
always the

commitment of her Government that criminals should
be punished

in accordance with law and strict action should be
taken according

to law against the guilty persons. She said that
her Government

never compromised on the issue of law and order.
This was the

reason, when any Minister, M.L.A. or M.P. of
Bahujan Samaj Party

had committed any crime, the State Government had
taken action

against them in accordance with law.

In such a situation, the Hon’ble Chief Minister ji
considered

that in view of the strict attitude of the State
Government towards

the crime and criminals, the family members of Dr.
Sachan should

have the faith on the State Government that if Dr.
Sachan had

been murdered, then all the guilty persons
involved would be held.

Since, the family members of Dr. Sachan had no
faith over the

State police, therefore, suggestion was given by
the State

Government in the Hon’ble High Court for
investigation by special

team (SIT) in the case.

Despite of it, the family members of Dr. Sachan
wished that

this case should be handed over to CBI for
investigation.

Therefore, the Hon’ble Chief Minister ji has
strictly directed the

senior police and administrative officers to
recommend the case of

Dr. Sachan’s death to CBI immediately. The Hon’ble
Chief Minister

ji while reprimanding the senior police and
administrative officers

directed them to take action immediately according
to the wishes

of Dr. Sachan’s family members.

The Hon’ble Chief Minister ji has also hoped that
CBI would

investigate the entire case in impartial manner to
bring out the

truth and if Dr. Sachan had been murdered, then
legal action

would be taken against the guilty persons.

The Hon’ble Chief Minister ji also said that
decision to

recommend this case to CBI by the State Government
had been

taken with a view to make the family members of
Dr. Sachan

assured. Besides, the society and the country
should know that

BSP Government of Uttar Pradesh never made any
compromise
