Marketing the Dhamma
Professional
scientists often disparage their colleagues who are intent topopularize
science. The ivory tower and the institutions that support it,
thetenure system and the tradition of academic freedom, ensure that
scientificresults are not biased by popular taste or current affairs, so
that scientistsremain excellent. The Buddhist adepts cannot afford to
be aloof in quite thesame way; they are expected to teach the regular
folks and make a directdifference in their lives through routine
contact. To a limited degree, theyshould popularize. Yet they also
require a similar degree of isolation frompopular taste and current
affairs, lest these draw them away from the authenticteachings of the
Buddha. And, in fact, the Buddha specified a degree ofaloofness: A
series of monastic rules of etiquette ensure that the monastic notteach
to someone, for instance, who does not show the proper respect. This
isprobably at least partially why Buddhism has had a scant history of
proselytizing and why monks don’t physically hold forth on soap boxes.
Nonetheless there are sometimes deliberate attempts on the part of
adepts orBuddhist leaders to promote the Sasana, a particular movement
or institution,or simply the welfare of a particular teacher, by
deliberate accommodation ofFolk Buddhist elements. The danger here is
that the integrity of authenticBuddhism might be sacrificed. Zen Master
Keizan (1268-1325) is widelyconsidered the second founder of Soto Zen
after Dogen, largely due to hissuccess in popularizing the young
movement. He continued to scrupulouslypromote meditation and monastic
discipline as taught by the master, yet at thesame time syncretized this
Zen with folk practices concerning Shinto spirits(kami and ryūten)
which could become either protectors of Soto temples ortheir
adversaries. Often Soto monks would actually compete with local
villagespirits in displays of power, sometimes converting the spirits to
the Soto cause.Over time, Soto monks succeeded in this way in occupying
many abandonedTendai and Shingon temples, assimilating spirits and
villagers alike into localcongregations. Many of the accommodations to
Folk Buddhism described above mayanalogously involve deliberate,
targeted marketing, though one would hopethat more often a tolerant
familiarity would suffice to inspire folks in theirwholesome practices.
Doctrinal widening and promotion of devotional andmeditative experiences
represent perhaps a bit of marketing. However, theBuddha certainly set
limits on the extent to which monastics were to marketthemselves
personally to the laity: They were allowed no claims of high statesof
attainment (particularly if false), and were disallowed from making
teachinginto a livelihood. Teaching was in this way kept honest and
direct, unbiased byfolk understandings. Yet today we live in a mass
marketing consumer culture. Buddhists andwould-be Buddhists in the West
encounter a media-enabled onslaught ofteachings, practices and teachers
from which American Folk Buddhists arefree, at a cost, to select those
that carry the most appeal, then mixing andmatching the various options
much as they do optional features of cars orchoice of kitchen utensils.
This is the way of the modern marketplace.Teachers and authors
correspondingly fall easily into the role of promoting andselling
particular practices and teachings as commodities, for a price,
takingcare how they are packaged and presented, for instance, in the
form of popularself-help books, lectures, seminars, CD’s, stage
performances and personalhourly consultations. Here in America, where we
are used to having it our way,we are offered many flavors of Buddhism:
We have “beat,” “punk,” and“geek,” “formal,” your basic “upper-middle
way,” and now even “hold thereligion.”108 At the same time information –
good information – aboutBuddhism is widely available as never before.
Charismatic teachers who claim personal Awakening and experiences are
allthe rage in Buddhism, just as they are outside of Buddhism. One
highlytrained, authorized and “awakened” teacher has developed a
remarkablebreakthrough to impart “awakening to your true self,”
apparently a genuinesatori experience in an expensive group context that
thereby circumvents thehours on the meditation cushion one would need
to get the same experience.Testimonials indicate impressive results that
not only rival what the mostskilled itinerant tent revivalists are able
to accomplish in group settings, butthat also seem to be accessible by
telephone for an hourly fee. Although it isstill unclear that this
particular technique is an “answer” to anything, that it isnow “easy” is
certainly a significant breakthrough. The real danger in entrusting the
Sasana to the consumer market is that themarket inevitably vulgarizes
whatever it sells. The danger is that Buddhismwill go the way of fast
food, pill popping and televangelism. How can a radicalBuddhism, one
that teaches the way of renunciation and restraint, onechallenges the
most fundamental assumptions of the folk culture, avoidbecoming
commodified, mixed and matched and accommodated intosomething that has
little in common with the Buddhist teachings that oncepassed quietly
from the adepts to the folk, to those whose hearts had opened tothe
Buddha, the Dharma and the Sangha, who encountered monastics on
theiralms rounds, or approached them at their monasteries with
questions, orsimply learned to emulate their demeanor, their behavior,
the simplicity oftheir lives and their kindness? Dwitiy buddha sasana |

Carrot juice: Benefits, nutrition, and recipes
How can I get the benefits of carrot juice?

Benefits
Nutrition
Risks and considerations
Juicing tips and recipes
Summary

Juicing
has become increasingly popular in recent years and is now a
multimillion dollar industry. Carrots are a common ingredient in many
juices, as they provide a flavor that pairs well with many other fruits
and vegetables.

Aside from its taste, carrot juice
may also provide numerous health benefits. These possible benefits
include reducing the risks of many different health conditions.

People
can purchase fresh fruit and vegetable juices from most grocers,
farmers markets, and specialized juice shops and bars. Making carrot
juice at home is also possible using juicing equipment.

Read
on to learn some recipes and find out more about the potential health
benefits and possible risks of drinking carrot juice. We also look at
the nutritional content of carrots.

Benefits

Carrot
juice is highly nutritious and may be beneficial for preventing a range
of health conditions. We cover these possible benefits in more detail
below.

Stomach cancer

Carrots contain antioxidants, which may explain their possible role in cancer prevention.

In a review of studiesTrusted Source, researchers tested the effect of eating carrots on a person’s risk of stomach cancer.

They
linked eating carrots to a 26% lower risk of stomach cancer. However,
they did not specify how many carrots a person needed to eat to reduce
their stomach cancer risk.

Conducting more controlled studies will help scientists confirm this association.

Leukemia

More research is needed to confirm this, but carrot juice may have a future role in leukemia treatment.

In one study,
researchers looked at the effect of carrot juice extracts on leukemia
cells. The carrot juice extracts caused the leukemia cells to
self-destruct and stopped their cell cycle.

Although it is
unlikely to become a standalone treatment for leukemia, carrot may be a
good dietary choice for people with this condition.

Breast cancer

A 2012 studyTrusted Source in women who survived breast cancer looked at the effect of carrot juice on the levels of carotenoids, markers of oxidative stress, and markers of inflammation in the blood.

Oxidative stress
occurs when disease-causing free radicals outnumber the antioxidants in
the body, increasing the risk of certain cancers and other health
conditions.

The researchers reported that higher levels of
carotenoids in the blood were associated with a lower risk of breast
cancer returning.

During the study, participants consumed 8 ounces
of carrot juice daily for 3 weeks. At the end of the study, the women
had higher blood levels of carotenoids and lower levels of a marker
associated with oxidative stress.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

Carrot juice is high in vitamin C. In 2016, researchers explored the linkTrusted Source between dietary vitamin C intake and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in Korean adults aged 40 years or older.

They
found that people with COPD had significantly lower intakes of multiple
nutrients that carrot juice provides than people without COPD. These
nutrients included carotene, potassium, vitamin A, and vitamin C.

However,
people with COPD also ate significantly less food overall than people
without it. For people in the study who smoked heavily, the risk of COPD
was lower in those who consumed more vitamin C than those who consumed
very little.

According to the United States Department of Agriculture’s FoodData Central, one cup of canned carrot juice containsTrusted Source:

  • 94 kilocalories
  • 2.24 grams (g) of protein
  • 0.35 g of fat
  • 21.9 g of carbohydrate
  • 1.89 g of fiber

The same amount of carrot juice provides a variety of vitamins and minerals, including:

  • 689 milligrams (mg) of potassium
  • 20.1 mg of vitamin C
  • 0.217 mg of vitamin B-1 (thiamin)
  • 0.512 mg of vitamin B-6
  • 2.290 micrograms (mcg) of vitamin A
  • 36.6 mcg of vitamin K

People
with weakened immune systems may need to avoid certain foods if there
is a risk of these foods carrying food-borne illnesses.

This includes:

  • people who are receiving cancer treatment
  • pregnant women
  • young children
  • older adults

Freshly
squeezed fruit and vegetable juices may not have gone through the
pasteurization process. As a result, they might have a higher risk of
carrying germs. People with less effective or suppressed immune systems
might have a more severe reaction to the effects of infectious agents.

The Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center state that people following a low microbial diet on the advice of a doctor should avoid unpasteurized fruit and vegetable juices unless they are homemade.

According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), pregnant women should choose pasteurized juicesTrusted Source or those that have a long shelf life. During pregnancy, women should avoid freshly squeezed juice.

Carrots contain a type of carotenoid called beta-carotene that the body can convert into vitamin A.

Consuming large amounts of carotenoids from foods has no links with harmful effects. However, the skin can turn yellow or orangeTrusted Source if a person consumes large amounts of beta-carotene over a long period of time. This effect is called carotenoderma.

According to Stanford Health Care, the vitamin and mineral content of one cup of carrot juice is almost equivalent to that of five cups of chopped carrots.

Although
fresh fruit and vegetable juices do provide plenty of nutrients, they
do not contain as much fiber as fresh fruits and vegetables. Also, they
contain more sugar per cup than whole fruits and vegetables.

For
example, one cup of carrot juice contains 2 g of fiber and 9 g of sugar,
whereas one cup of cubed, raw carrots provides 3.5 g of fiber and 6 g
of sugar.

Making fresh carrot juice at home requires a juice
extractor. These appliances are available online, in department stores,
and at other retail stores that sell small kitchen appliances.

It
is important to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for using a
juicer and clean it after each use. Juice extractors may also come with
recipe suggestions.

People can combine carrots with other fruits
and vegetables to make flavorsome juices. A person can try the following
recipes at home:

  • carrot and apple juice
  • carrot and orange juice
  • carrot juice with kale
  • cinnamon and ginger carrot juice

Carrot juice may offer many benefits due to its concentrated levels of nutrients.

However, carrot juice has less fiber and more sugar than whole carrots. Fiber can help support weight management and reduce cholesterol levels.

Depending
on the preparation methods, carrot juice may not be appropriate for
everyone, especially pregnant women, young children, older adults, and
people with certain conditions.

However, most people can include
carrot juice in moderation as part of a healthful, well rounded diet.
That said, it is important to remember that drinking juice is not a
replacement for eating whole fruits and vegetables.

Carrots

carrots

If you follow my instructions carrots are incredibly easy to grow. And they are a great source of vitamin A, K, and potassium.

Typically, you will plant carrots one month after the last spring frost.

Carrots are eaten raw, cooked, in soups, and in meat dishes.

  • Container Size: 5-gallon window box
  • When to Plant: One month after the last frost.
  • How to Grow it: Plant 4-6 inches deep. Plant 3-4 inches apart.
  • Watering Needs: Water Immediately after planting and then two to three times a week for 15 seconds.
  • Where to place it: Full-Sun
  • Life Cycle: Annual Plant
  • When to Harvest: Slowly pick 100 days after planting

How to Grow Carrots in Pots

Download Article

If you have limited garden space, you can grow carrots in pots
instead. While many standard-length carrots don’t grow as long in
containers, most smaller varieties thrive in them. Make sure you have a
deep container that allows the edible root to grow well into the soil,
and keep the soil wet to maximize growth.

Part 1

Getting the Pot Ready

Download Article

1

Select a shorter carrot variety. Smaller varieties
typically adapt to container growing better than standard-length
varieties. It’s also a good idea to choose varieties that have a shorter
maturing time.

  • Smaller varieties include Thumbelina, Romeo, Oxheart, Little Finger, Short ‘n’ Sweet, or Parisienne.[1]
  • You can also try Parmex, Danvers Half Long, Chantenay Red Core, and Shin Kuroda.

2
Choose a wide container that’s at least 1-foot (0.30-m) deep.
Deeper is even better. Carrots develop underground, and the root system
needs a lot of space to grow. Similarly, the wider the pot is, the more
carrots you can grow.[2]

  • The container should also have adequate drainage holes to prevent excess water from causing the carrots to rot.
  • The type of container does not matter much as long as it has enough
depth. Clay, plastic, or stone is fine, whether circular or rectangular.
  • If your pot doesn’t have drainage holes, you can drill your own.

3

Clean your container with soap and water. If you have
a previously used container, scrub out the inside before planting your
carrots. Bacteria and microscopic insect eggs often hide inside used
containers and may hinder your yield if they infect your carrot plants.[3]

4
Pick a loose, well-draining potting media. Both soil
and soilless mixtures can work. If you want to buy your soil, pick one
meant for container vegetables. If you do buy your own soil, try adding
in peat moss. It can make up 30%-50% of your soil.[4]
Alternatively, you can add horticultural sand to the mix, and it can make up 30% of your soil.
  • Try a mixture of red soil, decomposed compost, and sand mixed in equal portions for a soil-based media you make yourself.
  • Consider coco peat mixed with a small amount of perlite for a soil-less media.
  • Find all of these components at your local garden store. Ask a sales associate for a recommendation, if necessary.

5

Fill your container with the soil or soilless medium.
Leave1 inch (2.5 cm) of empty space between the top of the media and
the rim of the container. You can also mix a slow-releasing fertilizer
into the soil, but pick one that has less nitrogen, such as a 5-10-10
mix. Nitrogen will encourage leaf growth instead of carrot growth.[5]

Part 2

Planting Your Seeds

Download Article

1
Plant after the first frost if you’re planting outdoors.
Carrots like cooler weather, but they still won’t take kindly to frost.
Their preferred temperature is around 55 °F (13 °C) or a bit warmer, so
early spring is fine.
  • However, they don’t do well in temperatures over about 85 °F (29 °C).
2
Dig holes that are 1/2 an inch (1.25 cm) deep. Space your carrots about 12 to 1 inch (1.3 to 2.5 cm) apart. You can plant them further apart if you wish. Drop 2-3 carrot seeds in each hole.[6]

  • Carrot seeds are tiny and hard to plant. If you drop some, that’s fine. You can thin out the plants later once they sprout.
3
Fill the holes in with your planting medium. Do not
pack the medium into the holes since doing so may crush the seeds.
Instead, lightly drop the medium into each hole. Make sure you get every
hole filled.[7]

  • Pat the soil down gently when you’re done.
4
Water the seeds thoroughly. Add enough water to make
the medium very wet. You don’t need to make puddles, but your soil
should be wet to the touch, not just moist. Your seeds need enough water
to start the germination process.[8]

  • Use a gentle sprayer so you don’t stir up the seeds.

Part 3

Caring for and Harvesting Carrots

Download Article

1

Water your carrots daily in warm weather. You may
even need to water them twice a day during hot, sunny weather. Do not
let the soil stay dry for any extended amount of time.[10]

  • Stick your finger in the soil to see if it’s moist. If it’s not, you need to water it.
  • In most cases, tap water works well for carrots. However, if the
water you use for your garden is treated with a water softener, use
distilled water for your carrots, instead.

    2

Feed your carrots with fertilizer once a week or so to encourage growth.
Try a 5-10-10 fertilizer, which has less nitrogen. That will encourage
the roots to grow instead of the leaves. However, it’s not absolutely
necessary to use fertilizer with carrots.[11]

3
Thin out your carrots once they reach 1 inch (2.5 cm).
Once your carrots start to grow into seedlings, cut out any extra
plants with scissors or gardening shears. The plants you keep should be
spaced 2 to 3 inches (5.1 to 7.6 cm) apart to help them grow.[12]

  • If you try to pull out the unwanted seedlings, you could damage your other plants.

4
Use additional growing medium to correct growth problems.
If your carrots start leaning, straighten them up gently and add soil
to stabilize them. Similarly, if your carrots start peeking through the
top of the soil, cover them up with more soil.[13]

  • When carrots peek out of the soil, they turn green at the top. It doesn’t harm them, but they don’t look as pretty.
5

Spray your carrots with an antifungal spray if you notice white mildew.
Container carrots won’t be as susceptible to pests and disease, but you
may still get a fungal infection from time to time. You’ll notice a
white, powdery substance on the leaves. You can buy antifungal sprays or
make your own.
Make an anti-mildew spray by adding a tablespoon (14 grams) of
baking soda to 1 gallon (3.8 L) of water with a squirt of dishwashing
liquid. Mix it up, and apply it to the plant with a spray bottle once a
week.[14]

6
Harvest your carrots when they reach peak color.
Depending on the variety, your carrots could be yellow, red, orange, or
purple. Generally, they will take 2 to 2 1/2 months to fully mature and
reach the right color. Grasp the greens near the top of the root and
gently wiggle them out of place.[15]

  • The earlier you harvest mature carrots, the sweeter they will be when you can finally eat them.

Peppers must be planted one month after your last spring frost. Any sign of frost or cold weather will kill your peppers.

Peppers have many uses. They are used in pasta dishes, stuffed with sausage, and added to salads.

A Step-by-Step Guide to Growing Peppers

Reap your best (and spiciest) crop ever.

Planning
to grow peppers this season? Great! Peppers are chock-full of good
flavor and nutrition. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you reap your
best pepper crop ever, whether you’re starting with your own transplants
or planting ones you bought at your local garden center.
1. Prep the site.

The
right site can make all the difference in how well peppers perform.
Choose a sunny, well-drained spot where peppers haven’t grown recently.
The soil should be deep, rich, and loamy. If yours isn’t, amend it with
about 1 inch of compost.

Avoid adding too much nitrogen to the
soil, however. Excessive nitrogen can cause the pepper plants to grow
too fast, making them more susceptible to disease and less productive.

2. Harden off seedlings.

Before
you plant your pepper seedlings, you’ll need to harden them off by
gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions. This process helps
seedlings adjust, so they’ll be less stressed when you plant them. And
less stress means bigger, more productive peppers.

When daytime
temps reach the mid-60s, set the seedlings in a sheltered location
outdoors, such as next to the house or garage, for a few hours each day
for three or four days. Over the next week, slowly extend that outdoor
time. Meanwhile, as the pepper seedlings become accustomed to the
outdoors, you can warm the pepper bed by covering it with dark landscape
fabric.
3. Plant.

Peppers
like warmth, so wait to plant until nighttime temperatures have
consistently reached 60 degrees and all danger of frost has passed. If
possible, set out your peppers on a cloudy day to help reduce stress on
the plants. Space the plants 12 to 20 inches apart, depending on the
mature size of the variety, and set them a bit deeper than they were in
their containers. (Like tomatoes, peppers grow extra roots from the
buried portion of the stem.)

Stake or cage taller varieties so
that the stems do not break in strong winds or due to a heavy fruit
load. After you plant the pepper seedlings, water them well.
4. Water and mulch.

Throughout
the growing season, make sure your pepper plants receive at least an
inch of water a week. Check the peppers often during periods of extreme
heat and drought, when each plant can easily take a gallon of water a
day. If you live in a very hot, arid region, add a thick layer of mulch
to help retain soil moisture and moderate the soil temperature. But do
this only after your soil has warmed — mulching cool soil will keep it
too cool and stunt the pepper plants’ growth.
5. Pinch off the first flowers.

As
weird as it may seem, pinch off any early blossoms that appear on your
pepper plants. This won’t harm the plants. In fact, it helps them direct
their energy into growing, so you get lots of large fruits later in the
season (and a higher overall yield) instead of just a few small fruits
early on.
6. Harvest your peppers!

You
can harvest the peppers at their immature green or purple stage, but
the flavor will be sweeter if you wait for them to reach their mature
color — usually red, but sometimes golden yellow or orange.

Italian
fryers, jalapenos, and Cubanelles are possible exceptions: Many people
prefer the flavor of these peppers when they are full size but still
green. To harvest the peppers, cut them off with hand pruners. Pulling
them off by hand can damage the plant.
