The 45 Vegan Documentaries You Have to Watch

These must-watch vegan documentaries, short films, and movies on
Netflix will open your mind and heart to living a plant-based,
cruelty-free lifestyle.

(Updated May 4, 2020) | It’s safe to say
that plant-based food has never been more popular, and vegan
documentaries are playing a major role. A study from DuPont Nutrition
& Health found that on a global scale, 65 percent of people are
consuming more plant-based foods and beverages. More people are ditching
animal products altogether in favor of a vegan diet; the Veganuary
campaign had a record-breaking run this year with more than 250,000
people partaking. Six out of 10 people who participated said they would
stay vegan after the initiative was over.

A 2013 survey—published on the blog The
Vegan Truth—asked roughly 8,000 vegans what motivated them to adopt the
lifestyle. Forty-two percent said watching an educational video, movie,
or film was the leading reason.

It’s not an unheard-of concept. When
“Dominion” emerged in 2018, people were vowing to ditch animal products
after watching just 15 minutes of the film. The 15-minute mark was also
when the general manager of High Note Cafe in Idaho decided to go vegan
and turn her whole business plant-based, too.

More recently, the star-studded “Game
Changers” film has motivated many to give plant-based living a try. But
there are countless other documentaries and films out there changing the
mind of the masses, with vegan creatives both in front of and behind
the camera.

Vegan Filmmakers

Last year, an international vegan film
festival launched in Canada. The Ottawa International Vegan Film
Festival aims to showcase the work of vegan creatives and films that
focus on “healthier, compassionate, environmentally friendly” lifestyles. The festival is said to be the first of its kind.

Kip Anderson and Keegan Kuhn are two
vegan filmmakers who have been celebrated by the masses. They are the
directors behind “Cowspiracy” and “What The Health,” two of the most
pivotal films for the vegan movement. Many celebrities, including Ne-Yo
and Lewis Hamilton, credit the latter for motivating them to try a
plant-based diet.

Chris Delforce — founder of non-profit
Aussie Farms, which aims to expose the animal cruelty found in the
farming industries — is the writer, director, and editor of “Dominion,”
as well as its predecessor “Lucent.”

Lee Fulkerson is the director of “Forks
Over Knives,” a documentary that promotes a whole-food, plant-based diet
as a way to avoid or even reverse disease.

In 2017, British comedian Simon Amstell
release a BBC film called “Carnage.” The satirical film is set in the
year 2067 when all of the British public is vegan.

James Cameron — perhaps best known for
his films “The Terminator,” “Titanic,” and “Avatar” — is an advocate of
vegan living. Cameron recently stated that people need to “wake the
[expletive] up” about the climate crisis. Cameron encourages people to
adopt a plant-based diet to lower their environmental impact. He named
diet one of the “biggest, most important ways that we could effect change.”

Cameron is one of the executive directors
of “The Game Changers,” along with vegan actor and activist Pamela
Anderson. The film was directed by Louie Psihoyos.
The vegan, Oscar-winning filmmaker also directed the 2009 film “The
Cove,” which explores the “gruesome secret” of fishermen in Taiji,
Japan, who capture and kill dolphins.

Filmmaker Kevin Smith adopted a
plant-based diet after suffering from a major heart attack in early
2018. His daughter, actor Harley Quinn Smith, told Page Six News that
her father was the “healthiest he’s ever been” following the
change. Smith now embraces the ethical side of veganism, too. Last
November, he appeared in an ad for Farm Sanctuary—the first farm animal
shelter in the U.S.—to encourage people to not eat turkey for
Thanksgiving. “You’re always told by older people it’s OK to eat
animals, we’re supposed to eat animals. And, you know, for a long time,
that’s what my generation believed. Now we know a lot better,”
Smith said while petting a turkey.

Vegans in Film

Vegan creators aren’t just behind the camera. A growing number of actors are turning to plant-based, cruelty-free living, too. Benedict Cumberbatch
has been vegan since at least 2017. The “Imitation Game” and “Doctor
Strange” star has since flaunted vegan fashion in the red carpet and
visited Extinction Rebellion protestors in London. He’s also dined with
fellow vegan actor Woody Harrelson, who has been plant-based for around
30 years.

Joaquin Phoenix, star of the recent “Joker” film, went vegan when he was just three-years-old. “Me and my siblings witnessed fish being killed in a really violent and aggressive way,” he has said. “It
was just absolutely obvious that it was something that we didn’t want
to participate in and we didn’t want to support … I don’t want to cause
pain to another living empathetic creature.”

Jessica Chastain (star of “Dark Phoenix”
and “It: Chapter 2”) took to social media to praise Phoenix for his
performance in “The Joker.” Chastain herself has been vegan for more
than 15 years.

Ruby Rose, Ellen Page, Forest Whitaker,
Alicia Silverstone, Liam Hemsworth, Alan Cumming, Natalie Portman, and
Nathalie Emmanuel are just some of the vegan actors making waves in the
film industry.

The 45 Vegan Documentaries You Have to Watch

Cowspiracy” looks at the link between animal agriculture and sustainability.

1. ‘Cowspiracy’

Now that it’s well into the 21st century,
mainstream society has accepted that taking care of the planet is a
good idea. There has never been a better time to draw attention to the
link between animal agriculture and ecological crises such as climate
change, ocean dead zones, and water shortages.

“Cowspiracy” manages to do exactly that
while simultaneously calling out several environmental organizations for
ignoring—or even obscuring—the truth about animal agriculture’s impact
on the planet.

You can watch “Cowspiracy” on Netflix.

“What the Health” studies the link between diet and disease.

2. ‘What the Health’

Following the success of “Cowspiracy,”
filmmakers Anderson and Kuhn decided to show that veganism is good for
our bodies as well as the planet. “What the Health” explores the health
benefits of a plant-based diet and exposes the reluctance of health and
nutrition organizations to point out the negative effects of consuming
animal products.

You can watch it on Netflix.

The documentary exposes cruelty toward animals in our food system.

3. ‘Earthlings’

“Earthlings” is packed with graphic
footage of violence against animals, so it can be difficult to watch. At
the same time, most will still consider it to be essential viewing for
anyone who might use or consume animal products.

For curious meat-eaters who seek the
truth about the industries they support, or vegans who wish to
understand the full extent of humanity’s brutality toward non-human
animals, “Earthlings” is required viewing.

You can watch “Earthlings” online.

4. ‘Forks Over Knives’

Before “What the Health” began veganizing
the world, “Forks Over Knives” was promoting the benefits of a
whole-food, plant-based diet. Among various experts in vegan nutrition,
“Forks Over Knives” features T. Colin Campbell, author of “The China
Study,” the comprehensive scientific resource on the health benefits of
the vegan diet.

You can watch this film on Netflix. You
could also check out the “Forks Over Knives” cookbook, which contains
more than 300 plant-based recipes.

“Maximum Tolerated Dose” reveals what goes on inside animal testing labs.

5. ‘Maximum Tolerated Dose’

Do you ever wonder what kind of suffering
laboratory animals endure – and why? Directed by Karol
Orzechowski, “Maximum Tolerated Dose” includes “hauntingly honest”
testimonies from scientists and lab technicians as well as footage from
undercover investigations. The film aims to spark thought and
discussion about animal testing, with “simultaneously heartwarming and heartbreaking stories of animals who have seen both sides of the cage.”

You can watch this documentary online.

“Live and Let Live” examines the people who are going vegan.

6. ‘Live and Let Live’

Most vegan documentaries examine one or
more different reasons to adopt a plant-based, cruelty-free lifestyle.
“Live and Let Live” takes a slightly different approach, instead
examining the people who are going vegan, including former butchers and
meat factory workers. If you are looking for vegan documentaries with a
markedly human story, this is the film for you. “Live and Let Live”
features prominent figures in veganism and animal rights including
Melanie Joy and Peter Singer.

All rescue animals have a name and a story, according to “Called to Rescue.”

7. ‘Called to Rescue’

“Every animal we’ve met during our travel has a name and a story,”
says the “Called to Rescue” website. Anyone looking for happy vegan
documentaries should become familiar with this film that explores the
tireless work of sanctuary volunteers and staff, the dedication needed
for rescue and rehabilitation, and the stories of the animals
themselves, living out peaceful lives in sanctuaries.

You can watch this film for free online.

This documentary explores the sentience and rights of animals

8. ‘The Ghosts in Our Machine’

In “The Ghosts in Our Machine,” award-winning filmmaker Liz Marshall tells the inspiring story of photojournalist Jo-Anne McArthur, who dedicates her life to documenting the lives of exploited animals. The film begs the question, “Are non-human animals property to be owned and used, or are they sentient beings deserving of rights?”

You can buy or rent this film on iTunes.

“Eating Animals” was adapted from a book of the same name.

9. ‘Eating Animals’

Vegan actor Natalie Portman produced and

in the dark into the light.

all featured, explaining how they each made the move to a plant-based,
cruelty-free lifestyle.

devastation, causing one to think twice about what’s on their dinner
plate.

RSS favours paper ballots, EVMs subjected to public scrutinyNew Delhi | Saturday, Aug 28 2010 IST
Joining the controversy regarding the reliablity of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) which have been questioned by political parties, the RSS today asked the Election Commission (EC) to revert back to tried and tested paper ballots and subject EVMs to public scrutiny whether these gadgets are tamper proof. In an editorial titled ‘Can we trust our EVMs?’, The Organiser, the RSS mouthpiece, noted it was a fact that till date an absolutely tamper-proof machine had not been invented and credibility of any system depends on ‘transparency, verifiability and trustworthiness’ than on blind and atavistic faith in its infallibility.
The issue is not a ‘private affair’ and it involves the future of India. Even if the EVMs were genuine, there was no reason for the EC to be touchy about it, the paper commented. The Government and the EC can’t impose EVMs as a fait accompli on Indian democracy as the only option before the voter. There were flaws like booth capturing, rigging, bogus voting, tampering and ballot paper snatching in the ballot paper system of polling leading the country to switch over to the EVMs and all these problems were relevant in EVMs too. Rigging was possible even at the counting stage. What made the ballot papers voter-friendly was that all aberrations were taking place before the public eye and hence open for corrections whereas the manipulations in the EVMs is entirely in the hands of powers that be and the political appointees manning the sytem, the paper commented. The EVM has only one advantage — ’speed’ but that advantage has been undermined by the staggered polls at times spread over three to four months. ‘’This has already killed the fun of the election process,’’ the paper noted. Of the dozen General Elections held in the country, only two were through the EVMs and instead of rationally addressing the doubts aired by reputed institutions and experts the Government has resorted to silence its critics by ‘intimidation and arrests on false charges’, the paper observed, recalling the arrest of Hyederabad-based technocrat Hari Prasad by the Mumbai Police. Prasad’s research has proved that the EVMs were ‘vulnerable to fraud’. The authorities want to send a message that anybody who challenges the EC runs the risk of persecution and harassment, the RSS observed. Most countries around the world looked at the EVMs with suspicion and countries like the Netherlands, Italy, Germany and Ireland had all
reverted back to paper ballots shunning EVMs because they were ‘easy to falsify, risked eavesdropping and lacked transparency’.
Democracy is too precious to be handed over to whims or an opaque establishment and network of unsafe gizmos. ‘’For the health of Indian democracy it is better to return to tried and tested methods or else elections in future can turn out to be a farce,’’ the editorial said.– (UNI) — 28DI28.xml
Now will the BJP Say ‘Take A Chill Pill’ with its lawmaker Babul Supriyo allege the RSS. that it has become “inconsequential” and for whose farewell it is ? Smriti Irani, too, can take a swipe at RSS, saying it was a case of “sour grapes” when BJP was in opposition.
Now the CEC and CJI must order for dissolution of Central and State governments selected by these EVMs and go for fresh polls with paper ballots till the entire EVMs are replaced as we have reached a stage where people are demanding hundred per cent deployment of paper audit trail machine. And as the plan is that by 2019, the whole country will be covered by paper audit trail machines. The budget for this has been committed now as said by Zaidi.

Dr Swamy explains that he proved in Delhi high court that EVM machines can be tampered. Dr Swamy contacted EVM machine manufacturing Japanese company and asked whether they use this EVM machine in japan or not. They said they are not mad and they don’t use that in Japan, in japan they use ballot paper.
Similarly in many devloped countries ballot paper is used. Dr Swamy also explains about the solution which he proposed.

The Ideal and Reality
I
have written of the Sangha in ideal terms, yet a pervasive factor in
the history of the Monastic Sangha is the frequently less than ideal
excellence of the Monastic Sangha. The following account from the Vinaya
describes the infamous Group of Six who are reported to have lived even
at the time of the Buddha:
Now
at that time, unscrupulous monks … were in residence at Kitagiri.
They indulged in the following kinds of bad habits: they planted …
small flowing trees, … , they plucked them …, they tied them up into
(garlands) …. These take or send garlands … to wives of reputable
families, to daughters …, to girls …, to daughters-in-law …, to
female slaves of reputable families. … These eat from one dish
together with wives … female slaves of reputable families. They drink
from one beaker; they sit down on one seat; they share one couch; they
share one mat; they share one coverlet; they share one mat and coverlet.
They eat at the wrong time; they drink intoxicants; they wear garlands,
perfumes and cosmetics; they dance and sing and play musical
instruments, and they sport. They dance when she dances, they play
musical instruments when she dances, they sing when she dances; they
dance when she sings …, they dance when she plays musical instruments
… they dance when she sports … they sport when she sports. They play
on a chequered board for gambling; they play on a draught-board; they
play with imagining such boards in the air; they play a game of keeping
stepping on to diagrams … they play at blowing through toy-pipes made
of leaves; they play with a toy plough; they play at turning somersaults
This goes on for
about five pages. Although this passage is almost certainly farcical, it
most have borne some recognizable truth.47
Bear
in mind that any human institution is easily subject to degeneration,
where at least some of its members will inevitably fall short of, or
even subvert, the mission with which the institution is charged. This is
true, for instance, for government and for academia, for journalism and
for health care, for road repair and for education, for corporations
and for non-profits, for police departments and for social movements. It
is certainly at least as true in science as it is in monastic life.
Still, doing without the more useful institutions is like the tsunami
survivor proclaiming, “That’s it, I’ve had it with water!” or the
tornado survivor gasping, “No more air for me.” Like institutions, water
or air can get unruly, but without them what would you drink or
breathe?
The Monastic
Sangha, even as the historically most durable institution on the planet,
is not so exceptional in this regard. This is particularly because
people frequently ordain with mixed intentions: In many Buddhist lands,
for instance, there is a degree of economic security or educational
opportunity consequent to becoming a monastic, or simply social status.
As a result there will often be monastics with poor discipline, little
interest in spiritual attainment and little capacity for inspiring the
laity or sustaining the Sasana, bloating the local sanghas, living
alongside those sincere and inevitably more adept monastics of pure and
noble intention. The Vinaya provides little in the way of mechanisms for
shedding wayward monastics, except in the most egregious cases, rather
favoring eventual reform. Fortunately, there are other factors in the
design of the monastic Sangha that limit such degeneration and probably
underlie the durability of the Sangha.
First, since the Sangha has no central control and little hierarchy, less than exemplary behavior is generally localized.
Second,
the arousing of faith in the faithless and the increase of the faithful
is likely to be the only elements of the Sangha’s mission to be
seriously compromised by wayward monks. The reason is that pure monks
will tend to form an adept clique within the Sangha to carry on the
remaining functions much as they would in a less bloated sangha. They
will tend to become Noble Ones and will be accorded the most influence
within and outside of the Sangha.
Third,
there is a kind of thermostat that provides a check on, and means of
recovery from, local degeneration: With a decrease in purity comes a
decrease in faithfulness. With a decrease in faithfulness, comes a
decrease in support for monastics. With decreased support, negligent
monks of mixed intentions leave the Sangha or fail to enter it in the
first place, while the more committed adepts remain in the Sangha
undaunted. With the increased purity of the Sangha comes an increase in
faithfulness …, and so on.
In
spite of inevitable weaknesses inherent in all institutions, the Buddha
designed the institution with the best track record ever to date, the
one that has endured the longest, and the one most critical to the
well-being of the Sasana. The Buddhist monastic life is not always
exemplary, but where it is upheld by the individual monk or the local
sangha, it provides the optimal opportunity for progress on the Path.

Electronic voting machines
EVM is not tamper-free & needs rectification : Swamy to Delhi HC

PTI
New
Delhi: Janata Party president Subramanium Swamy today contended before
the Delhi high court that Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) is not
tamper-free and it needs rectification to ensure free and fair
elections.
Appearing before a Bench headed by the acting chief
justice Madan B Lokur, Swamy said EVMs should not be used without paper
receipts.

Swamy contested the Election Commission’s claim that EVMs were tamper-proof, claiming it has been proved wrong.

The former MP said EC’s
refusal to entertain his request for the dual system forced him to
approach the court for its intervention in the matter.

He said that EVM is not a
unique instrument as claimed by the Commission since Bharat Electronics
Limited and Electronics Corporation of India Limited, who have
developed the machines, have
withdrawn the application for patent before the World Intellectual Property Organisation.

The court after hearing
his arguments adjourned the matter for April 14 as he sought time to
place some more documents before it.

With EVMs public do NOT know if results are accurate: Prof. Dill

http://www.scribd.com/doc/26954805/Dr-Dill-Letter-to-ECI

Dr. David L. Dill, Prof.
of Computer Science, Stanford University wrote to Mr. Navin Chawla,
Chief Election Commissioner on 3 Feb. 2010 on the ongoing debate on the
usage of EVMs in India.

He writes:

[quote]…An important
function of elections is to establish the legitimacy of the elected
officials in the eyes of the public. Skeptical, untrusting observers
should be able to see that election results are correct. It is
not sufficient for election results to be accurate; the public must KNOW
that the results are accurate. Civil society is damaged if elections
are not credible, even when fraud cannot be demonstrated.

In traditional
elections, paper ballots contribute to election credibility because
voters can ensure that their votes have been properly recorded (when
they write them on the ballot), and poll workers and observers at
the polling place can ensure that ballots are not changed, added or
removed after being deposited in the ballot box. In contrast, purely
electronic voting machines do not allow voters to verify that their
votes have been accurately recorded, and do not allow observers to
witness that the ballots have not been tampered with. Electronic voting
machines provide no evidence during or after the election to convince a
skeptic that the election results are accurate.

It is not clear that
this situation would be acceptable even if electronic voting machines
could be guaranteed to be accurate and honest. But such assurances are
well beyond the current state of computer technology.
More importantly, it is not feasible to prevent malicious changes to the
machines’ hardware or software. Computers are especially vulnerable to
malicious changes by insiders such as designers, programmers,
manufacturers, maintenance technicians etc. Indeed it is not known how
to build trustworthy paperless electronic voting systems even using
EXTREME security measures. Of course, these problsms are magnified
enormously when the design of the machines is held secret from independent reviewers.

I understand that the
argument has been raised in India that the EVMs are safe because they
are not connected to a network. All of the concerns I raise apply to
non-networked machines, since voting machines in the U.S. are also never
connected to the Internet. For example, a manufacturer or technician
can maliciously change the software or hardware on a machine whether it
is connected to a network or not.

With current technology,
the only trustworthy voting methods are those that allow individual
voters to verify that their votes have been properly recorded on a paper
ballot. In the United States, most voting systems rely on paper ballots
that are filled out directly by the voters, and counted either by hand
or by machine. If the votes are counted by machine, it is necessary to
audit the performance of the machines by choosing groups of ballots at
random and counting them by hand.

…’Computerized voting
equipment is inherently subject to programming error, equipment
malfunction, and malicious tampering.’ It is time to recognize the
reality that there is no basis for public trust in paperless electronic
voting equipment.

I would  be happy to
discuss this topic with you further, including technical issues,
referring you to individuals with various kinds of expertise whom I
know, or sharing more detailed experiences with electronic voting issues
in the United States. We can converse by telephone, email, or you would
be welcome to visit me at Stanford if you are in the United States. I
look forward to hearing from you…[unquote]

EVM’s credibility questioned

URVASHI SARKAR, THE HINDU, 16 FEB. 2010

Though
electronic voting machines were used in the general elections in the
country in 2004 and 2009, there were many complaints and allegations
regarding their use, Save Indian Democracy member Satya Dosapati said
here on Tuesday.

“The problems associated
with EVMs are not unique to India, other countries such as the United
States and Europe too have experienced them. Therefore many countries
are now reconsidering the use of EVMs,” he added.

Addressing a press
conference, Mr. Dosapati said there was need for a debate on the merits
and demerits of the use of EVMs and the paper ballot system.

He referred to a letter written by Stanford University professor Dr. David Dill to the Chief Election Commissioner

(http://www.scribd.com/doc/26954805/Dr-Dill-Letter-to-ECI) of India.

The
letter states that paper ballots contributed to election credibility
since voters could ensure that their votes had been properly recorded
when they wrote them on the ballot and poll workers and observers at the
venue could ensure that ballots were not changed, added or removed after being deposited in the ballot box.

On the other hand EVMs
did not allow voters to verify that their votes had been accurately
recorded or allow observers to witness that the ballots had not been
tampered with. EVMs provided no evidence during or after the elections
to convince sceptics that the election results were accurate, the letter
said.

Mentioning instances of
countries which had banned EVMs for elections, Mr. Dosapati said: “The
German Supreme Court has banned EVMs while the Netherlands too has
banned them despite spending millions
of dollars to operate them. About 21 States in the US have paper-backed elections.”

He also cited an Indian organisation Voter Watch which claimed that EVMs could be tampered with.

Speaking about why
Germany decided to discontinue with EVMs, attorney Dr. Till Jaeger said:
“EVMs which were in use in Germany since 1998 were banned by a Supreme
Court order in 2009. The use of EVMs was considered unconstitutional as
long as there was no paper-based proof to show voting activity.”

“The election process
should be public and verifiable. There is a lack of public control in
using these machines,” Dr. Jaeger added, saying that there was no way of
finding out what happened to one’s vote once it was registered by the
machine.

“One cannot see if the
machine is tampered with. In the paper ballot system, some observation
is possible. If ballot boxes are stuffed, one can at least see it
happening. The use of EVMs may seem efficient but is still not
justifiable.” he said.

EVM violates secrecy of ballot by booth profiling

This report from Sikkim
about EVMs raises an important point against the use of EVMs. Paper
ballot system maintains secrecy of the vote. EVM breaches the secrecy of
the vote.

When paper
ballots are used, there is a procedure to mix up the ballots from all
the ballot boxes of a constituency before counting begins.

With
the EVMs, votes polled in every booth become known, EVM control unit by
EVM control unit and thus expose the votes of a booth to intimidation
by political parties.

Sikkim to suggest amalgamation of EVM data into Master EVM

GANGTOK,

January 29: Sikkim is seeking to suggest the Election Commission of
India (ECI) to introduce such a device which is capable of amalgamating
all the data fed in the EVMs at various polling booths into a Master EVM
in an individual constituency to ensure even freer and fair elections.

According
to AIR Gangtok evening news broadcasted today, Joint Chief Electoral
Officer CP Dhakal said that the Chief Electoral Officer Vijay Bhushan
Pathak will be raising the issue at the All India Conference of

Chief Electoral Officers at Jaisalmer in Rajasthan on February 4 and 5.

Dhakal
said that the Chief Election Commissioner will also be requested to
issue necessary directions to the Electronics Corporation of India
Limited (ECIL) or the Bharart Electronics Limited (BEL) for production
of such devices as to ensure a more objective polling process.

Dhakal
recalled that when the ballot papers were being used for polling, prior
to switching over to the EVMs, the ballot papers from all the ballot
boxes, from various polling booths in an individual constituency, were
used to be mixed up well before the counting of votes began at the
counting centres.

The
AIR broadcast pointed that such a recommendation from the State Election
Office assumes much significance in the light of the fact that the
State had experienced post-violence in the past. Even today some of the
opposition leaders in the State complain of alleged discrimination by
the State Government and intimidation by the ruling party workers
against their supporters on the basis of their voting choice.
