bodhipakkhiyā dhammā: [bodhi+pakkhiya + dhamma]

things / mental states associated with enlightenment, qualities that lead to awakening.

The term is explicitly defined six times in the Indriya Saṃyutta and refers to the five indriyas, especially paññā:

SN 48.51
“katame
ca, bhikkhave, bodhipakkhiyā dhammā? saddhindriyaṃ, bhikkhave,
bodhipakkhiyo dhammo, taṃ bodhāya saṃvattati; vīriyindriyaṃ
bodhipakkhiyo dhammo, taṃ bodhāya saṃvattati; satindriyaṃ bodhipakkhiyo
dhammo, taṃ bodhāya saṃvattati; samādhindriyaṃ bodhipakkhiyo dhammo, taṃ
bodhāya saṃvattati; paññindriyaṃ bodhipakkhiyo dhammo, taṃ bodhāya
saṃvattati.
And
what are the qualities that lead to awakening? The faculties of faith,
energy, mindfulness, concentration, and wisdom are qualities that lead
to awakening, in that they lead to becoming awakened.

seyyathāpi,
bhikkhave, ye keci tiracchānagatā pāṇā, sīho migarājā tesaṃ
aggamakkhāyati, yadidaṃ — thāmena javena sūrena; evameva kho, bhikkhave,
ye keci bodhipakkhiyā dhammā, paññindriyaṃ tesaṃ aggamakkhāyati,
yadidaṃ bodhāyā”ti.
The
lion, king of beasts, is said to be the best of animals in terms of
strength, speed, and courage. In the same way, the faculty of wisdom is
said to be the best of the qualities that lead to awakening in terms of
becoming awakened.”

There
is a popular belief that the expression bodhipakkhiyā dhammā refers to a
set of 37 dhammas (probably a product of commentarial tradition) which
are indeed found together at DN 16, 28, 29, MN 77, 103, 104, 118, 149,
AN 7.71, AN 8.19, AN 10.90, SN 22.81, SN 22.101, and SN 45.89, although
without being called by this appellation: the four satipaṭṭhānas, the
four sammappadhānas, the four iddhipādas, the five spiritual indriyas,
the five balas, the seven bojjhaṅgas and the ariya aṭṭh·aṅgika magga.

Dvedhavitakka Sutta: Two Sorts of Thinking

https://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/mn/mn.019.than.html

“Bhikkhus,
whatever a bhikkhu frequently thinks and ponders upon, that will become
the inclination of his mind. If he frequently thinks and ponders upon
thoughts of sensual desire, he has abandoned the thought of renunciation
to cultivate the thought of sensual desire, and then his mind inclines
to thoughts of sensual desire. If he frequently thinks and ponders upon
thoughts of ill will
upon thoughts of cruelty, he has abandoned the
thought of non-cruelty to cultivate the thought of cruelty, and then his
mind inclines to thoughts of cruelty.”

-Buddha (M.N 19 Two kinds of thoughts)

Māra:

“By whom was this being created?
Where is the living being’s maker?
Where has the living being originated?
Where does the living being cease?”

Sister Vajirā:

“What? Do you assume a ‘being,’ Māra?
Do you take a position?
This is purely a pile of fabrications.
Here no living being can be pinned down.
Just as when, with an assemblage of parts, there’s the word, chariot,
even so when aggregates are present,
there’s the convention of a being.
For only stress is what comes to be;
stress, what remains & falls away.
Nothing but stress comes to be.
Nothing ceases but stress.”

You Are Blind and Deaf Without Meditation | Ven. Ajahn Chah

You’re
blind and deaf without meditation. Dhamma isn’t easily seen. You must
meditate to see what you’ve never seen. When we are lazy we should
practice and not only when we feel energetic or in the mood. This is
practicing according to the Buddha’s teaching. According to our own, we
practice only when we’re feeling good.
How are we going to get anywhere like that?

When are we going to cut the stream of defilements when we practice only according to our whims like that?

Of course, there are dozens of meditation techniques, but it all comes down to this – just let it all be.

Meditation
is just about the mind and it’s feelings. It’s not something you have
to run after or struggle for. Breathing continues while working. Nature
takes care of the natural processes. All we have to do is try to be
aware, going inwards to see clearly. Meditation is like this.

- Ven. Ajahn Chah, No Ajahn Chah

“Monks,
when one thing is developed and cultivated, the body and mind become
tranquil, initiative thoughts and focusing thoughts settle down, and all
of the qualities that play a part in realization of the noble truths
are fully developed.

What one thing? Mindfulness of the body.

Monks,
this is the one thing when developed and cultivated, the body and mind
become tranquil, initiative thoughts and focusing thoughts settle down,
and all of the qualities that play a part in realization of the noble
truths are fully developed.”

- Aṅguttara Nikāya 1.583

https://suttafriends.org/sutta/an1-575/

image.png

This
life doesn’t continue without food, but food does not produce peace for
the heart. Food just helps to sustain the body. Having understood this
fact, I go on my alms round.

Superior people such as Buddhas
considered the gain and homage that came to them from families to be
like a pile of mud. Desire for such things is like a fine dart that is
hard to pull out. Inferior people never give up gains and honours.
