Do not Trust the Untrustworthy
Jã 448 Kukkuțajātakam

Do not trust one who is wicked,
Do not trust one who speaks falsely,
Do not trust one who is selfish,
Or he who makes a show of peace.

Some of the people are as though
Descended from thirsty cattle,
They satisfy their friends, I think,
With words, but not with
their actions.

Offering empty hands in homage,
Concealing actions by their words,
They are vile, not to be approached,
In whom there is no gratitude.

Do not have trust or have contact
With these sorts of women or men
Whose minds are fickle, unsteady,
And are always ready to change.

Do not trust the unreliable
Who fall into ignoble deeds,
They would murder all and sundry,
Their swords are sheathed and covered.

Do not place your trust in such as
Only appear to be your friends,
Having smooth words
and various means,
They have no intention to act.

Where such a one sees gain or wealth,
After treacherously slaughtering
The foolish one, he will depart.

50 Profound Buddha Quotes That Will Crack Your Idea of Reality Wide Open

If you want to see the best Buddha quotes in one place, then you’ll LOVE this post.

I’ve personally gone through hundreds of Buddha quotes to pick out his top 50.

And you can filter through the list below to find the topics that most interest you.

But first, a brief introduction about the great man named Gautama Buddha.

Who Was Gautama Buddha?

Buddha was a spiritual teacher who lived in India sometime between the sixth and fourth centuries BC.

His philosophy ended up creating the religion Buddhism, and tends to counter much of what we’re taught in the west.

After many years spent in deep meditation, he realized that attachment and desiring lead to unhappiness.

He believed that enlightenment, or “Nirvana”, was achieved when one’s mind is compassionate, free of attachment and focused on the present moment.

He spent his entire life teaching others how to free themselves from suffering and live a life of compassion, fearlessness and joy.

So without further ado, here are the most inspiring 50 quotes from Gautama Buddha:

On Living In The Present Moment

“Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment.”

“The secret of health for both mind and body is not to mourn for the past, nor to worry about the future, but to live the present moment wisely and earnestly.”

“Every morning we are born again. What we do today is what matters most.”

On Achieving Enlightenment

“No one saves us but ourselves. No one can and no one may. We ourselves must walk the path.”

“A man is not called wise because he talks and talks again; but if he is peaceful, loving and fearless then he is in truth called wise.”

“Purity or impurity depends on oneself, no one can purify another.”

“Just as a snake sheds its skin, we must shed our past over and over again.”

“Peace comes from within. Do not seek it without.”

“Happiness will never come to those who fail to appreciate what they already have.”

“A man asked Gautama Buddha, ‘I want happiness.’ Buddha said, ‘First remove I, that’s Ego, then remove want, that’s Desire. See now you are left with only Happiness.’ ”

“What is evil? Killing is evil, lying is evil, slandering is evil, abuse is evil, gossip is evil, envy is evil, hatred is evil, to cling to false doctrine is evil; all these things are evil. And what is the root of evil? Desire is the root of evil, illusion is the root of evil.”

“To insist on a spiritual practice that served you in the past is to carry the raft on your back after you have crossed the river.”

On Love

“True love is born from understanding.”

“You, yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe, deserve your love and affection.”

“You only lose what you cling to.”

On Your Mind

“There is nothing so disobedient as an undisciplined mind, and there is nothing so obedient as a disciplined mind.”

“We are shaped by our thoughts; we become what we think. When the mind is pure, joy follows like a shadow that never leaves.”

“All that we are is the result of what we have thought: it is founded on our thoughts and made up of our thoughts. If a man speak or act with an evil thought, suffering follows him as the wheel follows the hoof of the beast that draws the wagon
. If a man speak or act with a good thought, happiness follows him like a shadow that never leaves him.”

“Whatever a monk keeps pursuing with his thinking and pondering, that becomes the inclination of his awareness.”

“Nothing can harm you as much as your own thoughts unguarded.”

“In the sky, there is no distinction of east and west; people create distinctions out of their own minds and then believe them to be true.”

“Our life is shaped by our mind; we become what we think. Suffering follows an evil thought as the wheels of a cart follow the oxen that draws it.”

“Remembering a wrong is like carrying a burden on the mind.”

On Anger

“You will not be punished for your anger, you will be punished by your anger.”

“Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one who gets burned.”

“Anger will never disappear so long as thoughts of resentment are cherished in the mind.”

On Compassion

“If your compassion does not include yourself, it is incomplete.”

“Thousands of candles can be lit from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared.”

“Hatred does not cease through hatred at any time. Hatred ceases through love. This is an unalterable law.”

“As rain falls equally on the just and the unjust, do not burden your heart with judgement but rain your kindness equally on all.”

“A generous heart, kind speech, and a life of service and compassion are the things which renew humanity.”

“If we fail to look after others when they need help, who will look after us?”

“Happiness comes when your work and words are of benefit to others.”

On Your Words

“Better than a thousand hollow words, is one word that brings peace.”

“Whatever words we utter should be chosen with care for people will hear them and be influenced by them for good or ill.”

“The tongue like a sharp knife
 Kills without drawing blood.”

“Better than a thousand hollow words is one word that brings peace.”

On Doubt

“There is nothing more dreadful than the habit of doubt. Doubt separates people. It is a poison that disintegrates friendships and breaks up pleasant relations. It is a thorn that irritates and hurts; it is a sword that kills.”

On Your Ideas

“An idea that is developed and put into action is more important than an idea that exists only as an idea.”

“Believe nothing, no matter where you read it, or who said it, no matter if I have said it, unless it agrees with your own reason and your own common sense.”

“If you do not change direction, you may end up where you are heading.”

On Suffering

“Pain is certain, suffering is optional.”

“Have compassion for all beings, rich and poor alike; each has their suffering. Some suffer too much, others too little.”

“The root of suffering is attachment.”

On Your Self

“No one saves us but ourselves. No one can and no one may. We ourselves must walk the path.”

“Doubt everything. Find your own light.”

“Believe nothing, no matter where you read it, or who said it, no matter if I have said it, unless it agrees with your own reason and your own common sense.”

“If you truly loved yourself, you could never hurt another.”

“Do not look for a sanctuary in anyone except your self.”

“There is no fire like passion, there is no shark like hatred, there is no snare like folly, there is no torrent like greed.”

“Set your heart on doing good. Do it over and over again, and you will be filled with joy.”

“Most problems, if you give them enough time and space, will eventually wear themselves out”

On Gratitude

“Let us rise up and be thankful, for if we didn’t learn a lot at least we learned a little, and if we didn’t learn a little, at least we didn’t get sick, and if we got sick, at least we didn’t die; so, let us all be thankful.”

Love yourself first and everything else falls into place

It may sound conceited or narcissistic to focus on loving yourself first. But it’s not.

The point isn’t to believe you’re better than others or to accept things about yourself that you really do need to change.

It’s about developing a healthy and nurturing relationship with
 you!

Loving yourself is about committing to who you are, understanding the many different nuances to your identity, and showing yourself a level of care and intimacy that we usually reserve for other people.

Unfortunately, we’re not taught how to love ourselves from an early age. And we end up caring about what others think of us rather than focusing on what we need at a more fundamental level.

This is why we partnered with Rudá Iandê to produce a free masterclass on transforming our relationships through the practice of self-love.

It’s currently playing on The Vessel (one of our partners) but only for a limited time.

Jambudvipa is the Indian name for the great continent south of the cosmic Mount Meru, the archetypal pilgrimage site. Anavatapa, the great lake at the center of the world, is marked like the vortex of a powerful tornado near the center of the great landmass that stretches across the page. Drawn by a Japanese Buddhist monk of the Kegon sect and published in Kyoto in 1710, this map is based on earlier Japanese Buddhist world maps that illustrate the pilgrimage to Prabuddha Bharat of the Chinese monk Xuanzang (602–664). Hotan has not drawn the route of this famous pilgrim here, but the toponymy of Prabuddha Bharat and Central Asia accords with Xuanzang’s account.

The mind is so fickle and agitated. It is very difficult to protect and very challenging to guard from evil. The wise person straightens his mind as an arrow maker straightens an arrow shaft.

In Buddhism

The Buddhist cosmology divides the bhÅ«maṇឍala (circle of the earth) into three separate levels: Kāmadhātu (Desire realm), RÅ«padhātu (Form realm), and ĀrÅ«pyadhātu (Formless realm). In the Kāmadhātu is located Mount Sumeru which is said to be surrounded by four island-continents. “The southernmost island is called Jambudipa”. The other three continents of Buddhist accounts around Sumeru are not accessible to humans from Jambudipa. JambudvÄ«pa is shaped like a triangle with a blunted point facing south, somewhat like the Prabuddha Bharatian subcontinent. In its center is a gigantic Jambu tree from which the continent takes its name, meaning “Jambu Island”.

Jambudipa, one of the four Mahādīpas, or great continents, which are included in the Cakkavāla and are ruled by a Cakkavatti. They are grouped round Mount Sumeru. In Jambudīpa is Himavā with its eighty-four thousand peaks, its lakes, mountain ranges, etc.

This continent derives its name from the Jambu-tree (also called Naga) which grows there, its trunk fifteen yojanas in girth, its outspreading branches fifty yojanas in length, its shade one hundred yojanas in extent and its height one hundred yojanas (Vin.i.30; SNA.ii.443; Vsm.i.205f; Sp.i.119, etc.) On account of this tree, Jambudīpa is also known as Jambusanda (SN.vs.552; SNA.i.121). The continent is ten thousand yojanas in extent; of these ten thousand, four thousand are covered by the ocean, three thousand by the Himālaya mountains, while three thousand are inhabited by men (SNA.ii.437; UdA.300).

Jambudipa is the region where the humans live and is the only place where a being may become enlightened by being born as a human being. It is in Jambudipa that one may receive the gift of Dharma and come to understand the Four Noble Truths, the Noble Eightfold Path and ultimately realize the liberation from the cycle of life and death. Another reference is from the Buddhist text Mahavamsa, where the emperor Ashoka’s son Mahinda introduces himself to the Sri Lankan king Devanampiyatissa as from Jambudipa, referring to what is now the Prabuddha Bharatian subcontinent. This is Based In the Ká¹£itigarbha SÅ«tra in the Mahayana.

Jambudipa in geopolitical sense

The term Jambudipa is used by Ashoka perhaps to represent his realm in 3rd century BC, same terminology is then repeated in subsequent inscriptions for instance Mysorean inscription from the tenth century AD which also describes the region, presumably Prabuddha Bharat, as Jambudipa.

‘ the Kuntala country (which included the north-western parts of Mysore and the southern parts of the Bombay Presidency) was ruled by the nava-Nanda, Gupta-kula, Mauryya kings ; then the Rattas ruled it : after whom were the Chalukyas; then the Kalachuryya family; and after them the (Hoysala) Ballalas.’’ Another, at Kubatur, expressly states that Chandra Gupta ruled the Naga-khanda in the south of the Bharata-kshetra of Jambu dvipa : this is the Nagara-khanda Seventy of so many inscriptions, of which Bandanikke (Bandalike in Shimoga) seems to have been the chief town. And fuidher, a record to be noticed below says that the daughters of the Kadamba king were given in marriage to the Guptas.

to support initiatives in working with atrocities, women’s leadership, disaster management.
teach basic mind development and culture through meditation and study classes.
Organize seminars, retreats, workshops and lectures with leaders in the intellectual, spiritual and social fields.

The Manuski Project

The Manuski Network

This was developed from the beginning and consists of all those individuals and NGOs who interact with the Manuski Project. Its aim was to provide a situation promoting confidence and solidarity, in which sharing of experience could take place.

The Gujarat Earthquake of 2001

Jambudipa raised funds for this, carried out relief work and constructed a hostel for girls from families affected by the earthquake. This hostel, Karun Vihar Kanya Sadan, is now run by Jambudipa’s local partner, Bahujan Hitaya, Gujarat.

The Social Develoment Programme

Khairlenji Atrocity 2006

Jambudipa helped to bring attention to this, and developed training inhuman rights and responding to atrocities as part of its programme. Since then it has engaged with many atrocities.

Manual scavengers

Jambudipa started to work with some from this extremely disadvantaged community and got the International Labour Organisation to understand that the practice still existed on a wide scale.

Nomadic Tribes

The trust worked with this extremely neglected community, helping to train some young people fromt hat community who eventually set up their own trust to develop eh work further.

The Pardhi community (called by the British, Thieving Tribes)

The trust set up kindergartens for children of this Community around Pune.

Scheduled Caste women’s leadership.

The Trust developed its own programme to develop this.

Discriminated communities abroad.

T he author, Rōkashi 浪華子 (1654-1728), was a scholar-priest and the founder of the Kegonji Temple in Kyoto. His woodblock map was revolutionary in being the first printed Oriental map to introduce detailed Western cartographic information into the traditional Buddhist cosmological view and to attempt to merge the two together into a comprehensible form.
