Online Promotion: How to make a GIF

ARTSTHREAD - Online Promotion: How to make a GIF

The first in an ARTS THREAD How To series on making your online portfolio stand out and get noticed! How to make a GIF.

What is a GIF? Is it a moving photo? Is it a short video with no
sound? Actually, it’s simply a series of still image frames coded into a
single file. A GIF is a moving picture that tells a story of the moment
better than most photos or videos could. It’s a very powerful and
engaging tool that everyone should be including into their websites!
Here are 2 ways to make one 1 – from a series of still images or 2 –
from a video.

MAKING AN ANIMATED GIF FROM STILL IMAGES IN PHOTOSHOP:

1. Set up your layers

The first step in creating any animation in Photoshop is to build a
layered Photoshop file with all the elements you plan to animate. Our
example document has 4 layers containing a hexagon, triangle, circle and
diamond.

HOW TO MAKE A GIF

2. Create animation frames with layer visibility

Chose Windows > Timeline to show Photoshop’s animation palette. In the Timeline window, click “Create Frame Animation”.
On the first frame, turn off visibility for all layers you do not want
visible at the start of your animation. Then add one frame at a time,
and turn on the layers you want visible for each step in the animation.
Changing layer visibility one frame at a time is a classic Photoshop animation technique that covers a wide variety of needs.

3. Adjusting your timing

Under each frame, select how long it should appear for before
switching to the next frame. To do this, click the time below each frame
and choose how long you’d like it to appear. In our case, we chose 0.5
seconds per frame.
At the bottom of the toolbar, select how many times you’d like it to
loop. The default will say Once, but you can loop it as many times as
you want, including Forever. Click Other if you’d like to specify a
custom number of repetitions. Preview your GIF by pressing the play
icon.

4. Exporting your GIF

Satisfied with your GIF? Save it to use online by going to the top
navigation bar and clicking File > Export > Save for Web
Make sure the image type is set to GIF, feel free to experiment with
some of the other options, and save your file. To test your resulting
animated GIF, drag the file onto your web browser.

MAKING AN ANIMATED GIF FROM A VIDEO IN PHOTOSHOP:

1. Import Video

Once you’re in Photoshop, go to File > Import > Video Frames
Select your video and click on “Load”. Make sure that it is a video that
can play in Photoshop. The formats supported are .MOV, .AVI, .MPG,
.MPEG, and .MP4.

HOW TO MAKE A GIF

2. Import Video to Layers

Check the appropriate selections under “Range To Import”. To select
only a few frames, check “Selected Range Only.” This option will allow
your GIF to be converted much faster. The size/layers will also be
smaller so that you can easily edit the GIF. If you do this, move the
slider in the video to your starting point, then hold shift and drag
towards the ending point to ensure that a section has been highlighted.
Your video will now be converted into layers so you can make it into a
GIF.

HOW TO MAKE A GIF

3. Edit Animation

Chose Windows > Timeline to show Photoshop’s animation palette. In the Timeline window, click “Create Frame Animation”.
Go to the animation area and trim any unnecessary frames until your
animation looks the way you want it. Adjust the timing of your GIF as
explained in “Making animated GIF from still images”.

4. Crop Video

Go to Image > Crop This will crop unnecessary space from the
picture and will lay focus on your subject of the animation. This is
also a good moment to add any new frames/effects if necessary.

5. Video Size

Image > Image size
It’s recommended to reduce the image size of the video. To do this,
choose new dimensions under Image Size. You generally want to choose
half the dimensions of the original GIF to keep the same proportions.

6. Export GIF

EXPORTING GIFS – FILE TOO BIG?

Once you’ve exported your GIF, if your file is too big, try these out:
