5)  School of Buddhist Studies,
Philosophy and Comparative Religion;

This
Spirituality one finds in one’s religion or religious teachings is the
real guide to human peace and happiness. And every religion has some
morals to teach.

REFLECTIONS ON BUDDHISM
by Most Venerable Bhante Dr. VINAYARAKKHITA

Freedom a Spiritual Perspective

“Just as there is only one taste in the ocean - the taste of salt - so in Dhamma there is only one taste. The taste of Freedom.” - Buddha

In modern world everyone seems to be speaking of political freedom and economic freedom but hardly do we find people speaking of freedom from wrong beliefs and practices that cause much harm at individual level and social level as well. Spirituality is the spirit to know reality, to know actuality and not a belief system as normally understood by common people.

Being free means to avoid false notions that, cause physical or spiritual paralysis among the humans. It is to free oneself from negative discriminations in the name of caste, color, race, region or religion and instead follow the universal truth, universal brotherhood, rationality and scientific temper to become a complete human being. Freedom with the sense of morality is true freedom because where there is sense morality there is sense of responsibility and where there is sense of responsibility there is equality. This in turn develops a sense of share and care, making things fair.

Just having Freedom does not mean one is having happiness but one who is happy has real freedom. Our nation got freedom but are our people happy ? One a man asked Buddha “I want happiness:. Buddha said remove “I” that is ego, and then remove “want” that is greed. See now, you are left with only Happiness which in turn is real freedom. In one sense we can say that free from doom is freedom. Buddha described Dhamma as the practice of Freedom. In Buddhism, Dhamma is a discipline that leads to freedom. Many may think that discipline and freedom are opposite things. But they’re not! It takes more discipline to live and prosper than to follow.
The work to again freedom is to work on shifting your thoughts to ones that are more loving and compassionate. Every time you think something negative about yourself and others , replace it with a positive . Focus on doing good things and give attention to it. Eventually you will start feeling good because of the acts that are free from greed, hatred and delusion. Doing so allows you to have the freedom and that is the freedom of the mind from defilements of greed, hatred and delusion.

The sudden eruption of violence is not uncommon at family, country and global levels. For instance the recent sudden threatening bomb blasts at Buddhagaya where Buddha got Awakened with Awareness has caused great concern all over the world. What kind of expression was this ? A Buddhist would consider such acts of violence as expressions of ignorance and lack of wisdom. All attachments to material and immaterial things lead to negation of individual mental liberty. Further ego is the root cause for all superiority complexes in the name of caste, class, region and religion and thereby takes away the freedom of individual and society. The Buddha observed that when we give up our ego both our mind and our body get liberated and this experience he termed it as “Anatta” (agelessness) which is the ultimate freedom. So let go ego! Go go ego!! No more ego!!!

Rajya Sabha adjourned over reservation in promotions

New Delhi: The Rajya Sabha was Wednesday adjourned till noon following protests by SP and BSP members over reservation for backward classes in promotions in government jobs.

As soon as the house met, members of Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP) came near the chairman’s podium, shouting slogans.

The BSP demanded early passage of a constitutional amendment so that people from scheduled castes, schedules tribes and other backward classes get reservation in promotion in government jobs.

The Supreme Court had struck down such quotas last year.

The constitutional amendment regarding this was passed by the Rajya Sabha and is pending with the Lok Sabha.

As the uproar continued, the upper house was adjourned till noon.

Is VHP a spent force in
Uttar Pradesh?

Lucknow: It’s time the BJP reworked its Uttar Pradesh strategy. The
Ayodhya Ram temple controversy is all but dead and its utility as a
vote-catching proposition might be over.

Its latest attempt to gauge the public response to the issue through the
Vishwa Hindu Parishad-sponsored chaurasi kosi parikrama might have made
it aware of the fact. It would also have realized that the VHP is no
more the force in the state it used to be.

Neither the saints nor the common people of Ayodhya town displayed any
interest in the parikrama, a move aimed at reviving public interest in
the Ram temple issue. The response from other parts of the state was
lukewarm too.
VHP yatra

According to the BJP leaders, the sadhus would have conducted their
parikrama peacefully but the state government reacted to it by deploying
force and arresting the saints.

“Their programme did not succeed as the full public support they were
expecting was not there. By now people know that they (the VHP) are
liars. In fact, the organization has lost its credibility and the call
for parikrama was an attempt to regain the lost ground. They failed as
people refused to be fooled by them,” said Gyan Das, the Mahant of
Hanuman Garhi in Ayodhya and also the chairman of Bhartiya Akhara
Parishad. He said sadhus are not supposed to even cross a river during
these months. The VHP’s choice of time for the parikrama “shows the
non-seriousness of their intention”.

In a departure from its usual practice, the organization had taken care
to ensure maximum publicity for its programme and ensured that
statements were issued to the media on a daily basis. It even provided
photographs of the event. Despite the effort, the event was a damp
squib. All the arrests were ceremonial and most of those detained by the
police were local workers of the BJP. The absence of angry reaction to
the government’s action was revealing in itself. The absence of the big
champions of Ram Mandir such as Kalyan Singh and Vinay Katiyar further
exposed the weakness of the movement.

“Organisations like the VHP have lost their relevance in today’s times.
Their bases are shrinking. Their tactic is to throw a stone in peaceful
water and see how far the ripples go. This parikrama was one of such
act,” says Farzand Ahmad, a senior political commentator. According to
Ahmad, such programmes become successful when they are people’s movement
but that element is lacking these days. Today’s youth are more
concerned about issues relating to their education and livelihood.

“The fact is that the BJP, while ruling the country under the banner of
National Democratic Alliance (NDA), never talked about the Ram Mandir.
The issue gains importance only before the elections. This time the
party was trying to test the waters through the VHP,’’ he added.

The BJP, however, denies the allegation.

Party spokesperson Vijay Bahadur Pathak said, “The BJP does not need to
dig so deep to find an issue for the elections. The party is focusing on
corruption in the UPA and development of the country during the NDA
government. We are ruling in three states, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh
and Gujarat, and all three states have been recognised for their
development work. Chhattisgarh is being appreciated for its food scheme,
Madhya Pradesh for women schemes and Gujarat for total development.
Even today people talk about the work done during the rule of Atal
Bihari Vajpayee.”

According to the BJP leaders, the sadhus would have conducted their
parikrama peacefully but the state government reacted to it by deploying
force and arresting the saints. And this happened because the Samajwadi
Party (SP) government wants to create a communal environment in the
state, which suits them.

Nonetheless, realising the failure of the VHP gimmick, BJP has now moved
on and is now working on wooing farmers. The draft of the plan is ready
– Kisan Adhikar March in Lucknow and Delhi in the current month in
which the party would ensure the presence of its national president
Rajnath Singh and Amit Shah, as well.

FIRSTPOST. POLITICS is correct in
saying ram temple controversy is dead along with rsss (rakshasa swayam
sevak sangh), bjp(brahmin Janata Party), vhp(vengence hindu parishad),
bms(brahmin masdhur sangh) and abvp(akhila brahmin vengence parish) are
dead since they are all the chips of the same coal and iron blocks and
vultures of the same feather flocking together to feed on the dead
bodies of the poor sarva samaj farmers and slum dwellers. Ms Mayawati
had rightly requested the Supreme Court to ban these out fits. And its
utility as vote-catching proposition is over.

sections of the society as enshrined in the Constitution for the
