Suggestions to all revivalists

Supreme Court had directed the Election Commission to replace all the Electronic Voting Machines which is NOT TAMER PROOF. Babasaheb Ambedkar & Kanshiram Ji to unlock all doors of Development an progress for SARVA SAMAJ SADBHAVAN policy of Ms Mayawati who is the only alternate and hope of the Nation to become PRABUDDHA BHARATH for the entire people to attain the Eternal Bliss as a Final Goal. Dhammachari Dr.Lokamitra was ordained by Ven. Sangharakkhita into the Western Buddhist order(now known as the Triratna Buddhist Order) in 1974 in London, is a true pioneer of Dhamma work. A founding figure of Triratna in JAMBUDVIPA, home of the Buddha, he’s been steadily working together with teams of friends to revitalise Buddhism in its native land. His life has been dedicated particularly to helping ‘Scheduled Caste’ people escape the hell of their situation by embracing the teachings of the Buddha and the example of their great visionary leader, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar. He has been living here since then, firstly developing Buddhist activities under Triratna Bauddha Mahasangha (TBM) and social projects under the name of Bahujan Hitay.TBM now runs over forty Buddhist teaching centers including two large retreat centers at Bhaja near Pune, and Bor Dharan, near Nagpur. Bjaujan Hitay ha established over twenty hostels for children who otherwise would find it hard to get schools education. It also runs many health and education community projects in the slums of Pune, Nagpur, Mumbai and other places. In 1998 Lokmitra fuunded the Jambudvipa Trust in Pune. Jambudvipa, the ancient Budhist name for the PRABUDDHA BHARATH sub-continent represents the transformation of society and culture Thrugh Buddhist ethical and spiritual values. besides specifically Budhist activities, the trust runs the Manuski project, which has two main programmes, training Buddhists, Scheduled Castes and Scheduled tribes (especially the most degraded castes and tribes) in social activism, and human Rights and advocacy, especially in relation to atrocities. The trust also runs three hostels, one for Scheduled Caste girls affected by the earth quake of 2001 in Gujarat, and two for Scheduled Caste children affected by Tsunami near Chennai. Since the mid’s Lokamitra has been developing the Nagarjuna Institute at Nagaloka in Nagpur, the main activity of which is an 8 month residential course in Buddhist studies and practice, as well as an introduction to social action, for newly embarrassed (Returned back) Buddhists, mainly from Scheduled Castes (but also OBC and Chakma) backgrounds, from all over the country. In the last 11 years over 750 students from 24 different states and over 40 different castes have benefitted from the training, and now constitute  nationwide network, transcending caste and region. More recently Lokamitra has been helping to develop the PRABUDDHA BHARATH Network to bring into communication people from all over the country, who are inspired by the approach of Dr. Ambedkar to Buddhism and social transformation, and to give them sense of solidarity.

Lokamitra is a trustee of the Indo Tibetan Culture Institute  School, Kalimpong, founded by Dhardo Rimponce, and a member of the Advisory Body, International Network of Engaged Buddhists. In 2008 he was awarded the Manhae Grand Peace Prize, in Korea and the Vishwa Keerthi Sri Buddhbhumi Dhamma Senapati, in Sri Lanka.

Here he talks about his work following along with a slideshow demonstrating the great liberating work that goes on at Nagaloka through the Nagarjuna Institute, where young men and women are given the training and respect they need to break free of caste and go on to help others do the same. Truly inspiring listening!

People all over the country see political and a
broad-basing
of the BSP party organisation as it was Dr B.R. Ambedkar who in 1954
advocated splitting of bigger states into smaller units. The previous
Mayawati government had got a controversial resolution
passed in the State Assembly on splitting Uttar Pradesh into four
smaller states as Purvanchal, Bundelkhand, Awadh Pradesh and Pashchimanchal. Mayawati
said when her party was in power, she had created new divisions, zones,
districts and tehsils so that better administration could be provided
to the people of the state, which is the most populous state in the
country. Purely from an administrative point of view, a state of over 200
million people, 72 districts, over 800 blocks… It’s just not
governable.”It is unfortunate that the
central government kept it pending since then, but with Telangana
becoming a reality, BSP demands that on the principle of one
language-one state, the Centre, besides reorganising larger states,
should also complete the process of division of Uttar Pradesh into four
states,
besides (formation of) Gorkhakland and Vidarbha,” she said. Size does
make a difference. For political reasons, the Congress
party has been averse to splitting bigger states into smaller ones and
pointlessly dragging feet on such demands as is happening in Andhra
Pradesh. Earlier the Uttarakhand movement was unnecessarily prolonged
for years.”When this population is divided between four states, development will increase,” she said.

Medals replace medicines for these ‘seniors’

As most of us put our alarms on snooze and snuggle into bed, a group
of 60 plus swimmers brave the winter to follow their passion.

Jay
Chandrasekharan’s skin has wrinkled over the past 32 years he has spent
swimming. His day starts at 3am. After doing yoga for an hour,
Chandrashekhar takes a bus from HAL 3rd Stage to Majestic and then takes
a bus to Sankey Tank to swim. His tryst with swimming started when he
suffered a slip disc and the doctors could not provide any answer for
his problems. That’s when he thought of improving his life. When asked
how he manages in the cold he said, “That’s all in your mind. Once you
are in the water you don’t feel anything.” Chandrashekhar has
participated in both national and state tournaments. And now his next
big dream is the English Channel. “We are preparing for that now. In
some swimming pools they put ice in the water so that our bodies get
acclimatised to the cold.”

This group of approximately 25 swimmers
have become a family now. They bond over swimming and find solace in
each other’s company. Even at the age of 70, these swimmers have no
health problems and joke among themselves that they are going to live
upto 150.

All of them have participated in state or national level
championships and bagged medals as well. Swimming has not only improved
their health but has given them friends for life. Says Jay, “This is my
family. If even one person doesn’t show up, we miss him, call him and
enquire why he didn’t come. We also go for trips occasionally and go for
breakfast every third Sunday of the month.”

They attribute all
their success to their coach Narasimha who represented India in 1979 in
Columbia in water polo and won a gold medal.

Another swimmer,
Mohan Rao L jumps right in the conversation. “I always used to swim as a
hobby but eventually tournaments came along and I thought, why not?”
For them, time has stopped as they describe age as just numbers.
“Instead of having medicines in our cupboards, we have medals,” they
sign off.

The Pioneer

PM candidate should be named after polls

Jagatheesan Chandrasekharan

BJP and the Congress very
well know that they are not going to get the numbers. But the RSS and
other leaders are just playing a game to be in the news always with the
help of the media to gain little more numbers. But one thing is
important. The Electronic Voting Machines has to be replaced as directed
by the Supreme Court that has to be totally Tamper proof and by making
the OPEN SOURCE CODE public. Otherwise the ruling governments servants
will help either the Congress or the BJP to capture the MASTER KEY again
and again. Hence all the leaders and cadres of non-Congress and non-BJP
must become alert and attentive in this regard and raise their voice
right now. Otherwise democracy, Independence and freedom will just be a
mockery.

VOICE OF SARVA SAMAJ SADBHAVAN

Ratnesh Katulkar
ratnesh 1Varnanam brahmano guru! Meaning: among all the varnas only the Brahmin can be appointed as a teacher.
This dictum is followed in Indian society from time immemorial. But in
contrast to this principle there has been frequent mention of a
non-brahmin teacher called Shukracharya, the guru of the Rakshasas, in
the Vedas and Puranas. Interestingly, there was a time when India earned
the title of vishwa-guru (’the teacher of the
world’). Needless to mention that the credit for this honour goes to
another famous non-brahmin teacher, the Buddha, under the influence of
whose philosophy India had built universities of international repute,
such as Nalanda, Vikramshila, Odantpuri, Vallabhi etc., which attracted a
large number of foreign students. Yet in popular knowledge, ancient
Indian teachers and education are synonymous with the Brahmins.
The long list of famous Gurus -
Dronacharya, Vasisth, Kripacharya, Manu and Gautam – circulated by mainstream culture consists of only Brahmins.
These names are popular in Indian tales, myths, religious scriptures
and to an extent are even considered history. However, one cannot call
this as caste based reservation, because these gurus earned their
position owing to their so-called ‘merit’. The Brahmins’ complete
domination of teaching was of course not without any reason. The
teaching profession is directly related with knowledge which is the key
to human development and progress; in such a situation it is natural
that the Brahmins restricted the teaching positions to themselves alone.
Allowing non-brahmins to teach would lead to the collapse of their
sacred fourfold societal division: so, how could they accept others as teachers?
radhakrishnan
In
modern India too, there has been no significant change in the
situation: like their ancestors Shukracharya and the Buddha, the Phule
couple - Mahatma Phule and Savitribai Phule - and Dr Ambedkar too spent
their whole lives for the sake of the poor and despised masses and
successfully educated them about their rights and created awareness. But
the ‘mainstream’ of Indian society does not see these leaders as
synonymous with Teachers’ Day. Instead, Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan’s
name is reserved for this great day and why not? He is a great
philosopher of international repute and as a teacher, he also resembles,
in some ways, the ideal vedic guru Dronacharya - who is still honored
and remembered by Hindus for
cutting off the thumb of his tribal student Eklavya to maintain the
merit of his favorite student Arjuna.
It
is true that Radhakrishnan didn’t cut off the thumb of any of his
students but he did commit intellectual theft of a student’s work. Very
few people know that Radhakrishnan’s famous work ‘Indian Philosophy’ is
largely plagiarized from the PhD thesis of Jadunath Sinha (please read: Subcontinental plagiarism‘ by Idrees Bakhtiar in the Dawn; also published in other South Asian media),
one of his students. However, when Sinha came to know about this theft,
unlike Eklavya, he didn’t follow the path of sacrifice and instead
filed a case in court against his teacher. It is another matter that
owing to Radhakrishnan’s influential position, the case was disposed of
without causing much trouble to him. But how can truth be totally
extinguished? It ultimately turned out that Radhakrishnan was not so
lucky after all because most
of the chapters of Sinha’s thesis had already been published in other
magazines prior to the publication of Indian Philosophy.
Thus it was well proved, without the need of any court’s intervention,
that Radhakrishnan’s most magnificent and glorious work was nothing but
an intellectual theft.
syam 8
Even
today, there are many teachers in India who have earned their names in
the academic world by plagiarizing the works of their students, like
Radhakrishnan, and there are many more teachers who due to caste,
religion and gender biases, like Dronacharya, force their students
either to leave their education before completion, or even to commit
suicide.
One
needs to recount only the tragic case of Jaspreet Singh, a Dalit-Sikh
student of Chandigarh’s Government Medical College, to illustrate what
kind of deleterious effect such biased teachers could have on their
students’ lives. On March 27, 2008, after a long period of harassment,
Jaspreet ended his life by hanging himself in the hostel library as his
casteist teacher deliberately failed him in his MBBBS final examination.
It
is not in Chandigarh alone, but all over India, particularly in premier
educational institutions such as IITs, IIMs, AIIMS and other central
universities, that you will find frequent occurrence of suicides by
Dalit and Tribal students every year. In recent months, on the
complaints of the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe students of
Safdarjung Medical College, New Delhi, about the casteism prevalent in
their campus, a committee was appointed by the National Commission for
Scheduled Castes (NCSC) under the chairmanship of Prof. Mungekar.
Among
the many important findings of the committee was the ugly revelation
that the teachers in the college were allotting marks to students on the
basis of caste. In Jaspreet’s case too, when his papers were rechecked
by an expert committee, it was found that he had passed in all the
subjects! But unfortunately, by the time he was vindicated, he had
already lost the battle of his life.
syam 6
This
is not the case of higher education alone; school education is not much
different. Reports of students being beaten so severely, by teachers,
that some of them even lost their lives frequently appear in the media.
Recently, there was a news report about a girl student being forced to
drink her own urine by her teacher in Shantiniketan near Kolkata. There
are many schools in rural India where dalit students are forced to clean
toilets and sweep classrooms. But so strange is Indian culture that it
grants the status of god to the teacher and anoints a guru who committed
theft of his student’s work as an ideal teacher!
However,
one good news is that now a section of people have started raising
their voice against this mainstream culture and are challenging the
celebration of Teachers’ Day on the birthday of Dr Radhakrishnan. This
year, a large number of Dalit, Tribal and other backward people gathered
at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi, to commemorate January 3rd, the birthday
of Savitribai Phule, as Education Day. As Dr Ambedkar once said: ‘what is wrongly settled must not be accepted as tradition but must be resettled’.

PIL to regulate Godmen and
astrologers of different religions

In the aftermath of Asharam Bapu incidence, I and wife Nutan have filed a PIL in Allahabad High Court,
Lucknow bench to put some regulatory mechanism for Godmen, occult practitioners and astrologers of all religions.

The petition says that India has
a very large number of
Godmen, occult practitioners and astrologers in all religions with different claims of divinity and
supernatural powers and having great hold over people, particularly the poor
and illiterate. Most of these people take monetary returns in return of their services;
hence they need to be treated as professionals.

As per the petition, these
people also need to be regulated by appropriate professional bodies like other
professions, so as to safeguard interest of common people and to stop entry of
imposters and cheats. .

formation of two separate Professional bodies at National and Regional levels for
Astrologers and God-men of various religions to act as Regulatory and controlling authorities,
consisting completely of people from these fields.
