Dīgha Nikāya gathers 34 of the longest discourses supposedly given by

will expound the discourse on the Dhamma which is called Dhammādāsa,

himself: ‘For me, there is no more niraya, no more tiracchāna-yoni, no
more pettivisaya, no more state of unhappiness, of misfortune, of
misery, I am a sotāpanna, by nature free from states of misery, certain
of being destined to sambodhi.

And what, Ānanda, is that
discourse on the Dhamma which is called Dhammādāsa, possessed of which
the ariyasāvaka, if he so desires, can declare of himself: ‘For me,
there is no more niraya, no more tiracchāna-yoni, no more pettivisaya,
no more state of unhappiness, of misfortune, of misery, I am a
sotāpanna, by nature free from states of misery, certain of being
destined to sambodhi?

Here, Ānanda, an ariyasāvaka is endowed with Buddhe aveccappasāda:

He is endowed with Dhamme aveccappasāda:

He is endowed with Saṅghe aveccappasāda:

He is endowed with a sīla which is agreeable to the ariyas,

This,
Ānanda, is the discourse on the Dhamma which is called Dhammādāsa,
possessed of which the ariyasāvaka, if he so desires, can declare of
himself: ‘For me, there is no more niraya, no more tiracchāna-yoni, no
more pettivisaya, no more state of unhappiness, of misfortune, of
misery, I am a sotāpanna, by nature free from states of misery, certain
of being destined to sambodhi.

Sato should you remain, bhikkhus, and sampajānas. This is our intruction to you.

Ananda, the twin sala trees are in full bloom, though it is not the
season of flowering. And the blossoms rain upon the body of the
Tathagata and drop and scatter and are strewn upon it in worship of the
Tathagata. And celestial coral flowers and heavenly sandalwood powder
from the sky rain down upon the body of the Tathagata, and drop and
scatter and are strewn upon it in worship of the Tathagata. And the
sound of heavenly voices and heavenly instruments makes music in the air
out of reverence for the Tathagata.

It is not by this, Ānanda,
that the Tathāgata is respected, venerated, esteemed, paid homage and

remaining dhamm’ānudhamma’p'paṭipanna, sāmīci’p'paṭipanna, living in
accordance with the Dhamma, that one respects, venerates, esteems, pays
homage, and honors the Tathāgata with the most excellent homage.
Therefore, Ānanda, you should train yourselves thus: ‘We will remain
dhamm’ānudhamma’p'paṭipanna, sāmīci’p'paṭipanna, living in accordance
with the Dhamma’.

‘The words of the Teacher have ended, there is no longer a Teacher’. But
this, Ānanda, should not, be so considered. That, Ānanda, which I have
taught and made known to you as the Dhamma and the Vinaya, will be your

1. What does NPR have to do with NRC and CAA?

A meeting: The Centre has asked all states to
participate in a preparatory meeting today for updating of National
Population Register (of ‘usual residents’ of India), data for which will
be collected between April 1 and September 30, 2020. The West Bengal
government
won’t send a representative.
Several other state governments including Kerala, Chhattisgarh, Madhya
Pradesh and Punjab said they have stopped work on NPR though reports
said all states except Kerala and WB have issued the relevant
notifications for updating NPR. These two states backtracked after the
passage of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) even though data
collected for NPR won’t confer a right to Indian citizenship. So, what’s the link?


  • NPR for all: Taking part in the NPR exercise and providing information related to the relevant documents (if you have them) is mandatory for all. A fine of up to Rs 1,000 can be imposed on the head of the family for not sharing the correct particulars.

  • NPR to NRC: The government has in the past (page 262 of the home ministry’s annual report here)
    described NPR as the “first step towards the creation of the NRC”,
    though the Murderer of democratic institutions and master og diluting
    institutions (Modi) and the Bevakoof Jhoothe Psychopaths (BJP) who
    gobbled the Master key by tampering the filthy fraud EVMs to win
    elections  later said that the NPR
    data will not be used for NRC. However, the BJP was later
    quoted as saying: “some (NPR data) may be used or some may not be used.” Earlier this month, the BJP said in an interview
    that the NRC was not on the agenda of the government yet. However, when
    asked if it had been put in cold storage, he said he had never said
    that. He had earlier told Parliament that “the process of NRC will be
    carried out across the country.”

  • NRC to CAA:
    The new citizenship law is meant to give Indian citizenship to refugee
    Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians (basically
    non-Muslims) who have entered India from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and
    Pakistan before 2015 even if they don’t possess proper documents. This
    means that while non-Muslims unable to provide the documentation and
    subsequently left out of the NRC will be able to get citizenship under
    CAA, Muslims, as a category, won’t get such approval. That’s the reason
    why protests against the “discriminatory” CAA have involved opposition
    of NRC and NPR too.
Meanwhile, the Kerala governor slammed the state government
on Thursday for challenging the new citizenship law in the Supreme
Court without “keeping him in the loop” and the West Bengal BJP reappointed Dilip Ghosh, who recently said that the BJP  in UP and Assam shot anti-CAA protesters like dogs, as the state unit chief.
